1. फिर क्या तू लिब्यातान अथवा मगर को बंसी के द्वारा खींच सकता है, वा डोरी से उसकी जीभ दबा सकता है?

1. Can you catch a sea monster by using a fishhook? Can you tie its mouth shut with a rope?

2. क्या तू उसकी नाक में नकेल लगा सकता वा उसका जबड़ा कील से बेध सकता है?

2. Can it be led around by a ring in its nose or a hook in its jaw?

3. क्या वह तुझ से बहुत गिड़गिड़ाहट करेगा, वा तुझ से मीठी बातें बोलेगा?

3. Will it beg for mercy?

4. क्या वह तुझ से वाचा बान्ध्ेगा कि वह सदा तेरा दास रहे?

4. Will it surrender as a slave for life?

5. क्या तू उस से ऐसे खेलेगा जैसे चिड़िया से, वा अपनी लड़कियों का जी बहलाने को उसे बान्ध रखेेगा?

5. Can it be tied by the leg like a pet bird for little girls?

6. क्या मछुओं के दल उसे बिकाऊ माल समझेंगे? क्या वह उसे व्योपारियों में बांट देंगे?

6. Is it ever chopped up and its pieces bargained for in the fish-market?

7. क्या तू उसका चमड़ा भाले से, वा उसका सिर मछुवे के तिरशूलों से भर सकता है?

7. Can it be killed with harpoons or spears?

8. तू उस पर अपना हाथ ही धरे, तो लड़ाई को कभी न भूलेगा, और भविष्य में कभी ऐसा न करेगा।

8. Wrestle it just once-- that will be the end.

9. देख, उसे पकड़ने की आशा निष्फल रहती है; उसके देखने ही से मन कच्चा पड़ जाता है।

9. Merely a glimpse of this monster makes all courage melt.

10. कोई ऐसा साहसी नहीं, जो उसको भड़काए; फिर ऐसा कौन है जो मेरे साम्हने ठहर सके?

10. And if it is too fierce for anyone to attack, who would dare oppose me?

11. किस ने पुझे पहिले दिया है, जिसका बदला मुझे देना पड़े ! देख, जो कुछ सारी धरती पर है सो मेरा है।

11. I am in command of the world and in debt to no one.

12. मैं उसके अंगों के विषय, और उसके बड़े बल और उसकी बनावट की शोभा के विषय चुप न रहूंगा।

12. What powerful legs, what a stout body this monster possesses!

13. उसके ऊपर के पहिरावे को कौन उतार सकता है? उसके दांतों की दोनों पांतियों के अर्थात् जबड़ों के बीच कौन आएगा?

13. Who could strip off its armor or bring it under control with a harness?

14. उसके मुख के दोनों किवाड़ कौन खोल सकता है? उसके दांत चारों ओर से डरावने हैं।

14. Who would try to open its jaws, full of fearsome teeth?

15. उसके छिलकों की रेखाएं घमण्ड का कारण हैं; वे मानो कड़ी छाप से बन्द किए हुए हैं।

15. Its back is covered with shield after shield,

16. वे एक दूसरे से ऐसे जुड़े हुए हैं, कि उन में कुछ वायु भी नहीं पैठ सकती।

16. firmly bound and closer together

17. वे आपस में मिले हुए और ऐसे सटे हुए हैं, कि अलग अलग नहीं हो सकते।

17. than breath to breath.

18. फिर उसके छींकने से उजियाला चमक उठता है, और उसकी आंखें भोर की पलकों के समान हैं।

18. When this monster sneezes, lightning flashes, and its eyes glow like the dawn.

19. उसके मुंह से जलते हुए पलीते निकलते हैं, और आग की चिनगारियां छूटती हैं।

19. Sparks and fiery flames explode from its mouth.

20. उसके नथ्ुानों से ऐसा धुआं निकलता है, जैसा खौलती हुई हांड़ी और जलते हुए नरकटों से।

20. And smoke spews from its nose like steam from a boiling pot,

21. उसकी सांस से कोयले सुलगते, और उसके मुंह से आग की लौ निकलती है।

21. while its blazing breath scorches everything in sight.

22. उसकी गर्दन में सामर्थ्य बनी रहती है, और उसके साम्हने डर नाचता रहता है।

22. Its neck is so tremendous that everyone trembles,

23. उसके मांस पर मांस चढ़ा हुआ है, और ऐसा आपस में सटा हुआ है जो हिल नहीं सकता।

23. the weakest parts of its body are harder than iron,

24. उसका हृदय पत्थर सा दृढ़ है, वरन चक्की के निचले पाट के समान दृढ़ है।

24. and its heart is stone.

25. जब वह उठने लगता है, तब सामथ भी डर जाते हैं, और डर के मारे उनकी सुध बुध लोप हो जाती है।

25. When this noisy monster appears, even the most powerful turn and run in fear.

26. यदि कोई उस पर तलवार चलाए, तो उस से कुछ न बन पड़ेगा; और न भाले और न बछ और न तीर से।

26. No sword or spear can harm it,

27. वह लोहे को पुआल सा, और पीतल को सड़ी लकड़ी सा जानता है।

27. and weapons of bronze or iron are as useless as straw or rotten wood.

28. वह तीर से भगाया नहीं जाता, गोफन के पत्थर उसके लिये भूसे से ठहरते हैं।

28. Rocks thrown from a sling cause it no more harm than husks of grain. This monster fears no arrows,

29. लाठियां भी भूसे के समान गिनी जाती हैं; वह बछ के चलने पर हंसता है।

29. it simply smiles at spears, and striking it with a stick is like slapping it with straw.

30. उसके निचले भाग पैने ठीकरे के समान हैं, कीच पर मानो वह हेंगा फेरता है।

30. As it crawls through the mud, its sharp and spiny hide tears the ground apart.

31. वह गहिरे जल को हंडे की नाई मथ्ता हैे उसके कारण नील नदी मरहम की हांडी के समान होती है।

31. And when it swims down deep, the sea starts churning like boiling oil,

32. वह अपने पीछे चमकीली लीक छोड़ता जाता है। गहिरा जल मानो श्वेत दिखाई देने लगता है।

32. and it leaves behind a trail of shining white foam.

33. धरती पर उसके तुल्य और कोई नहीं है, जो ऐसा निर्भय बनाया गया है।

33. No other creature on earth is so fearless.

34. जो कुछ ऊंचा है, उसे वह ताकता ही रहता है, वह सब घमणिडयों के ऊपर राजा है।

34. It is king of all proud creatures, and it looks upon the others as nothing.
