1. उसके रोष की छड़ी से दु:ख भोगनेवाला पुरूष मैं ही हूं;

1. I AM [Jeremiah] the man who has seen affliction under the rod of His wrath.

2. वह मुझे ले जाकर उजियाले में नहीं, अन्धियारे ही में चलाता है;

2. He has led me and brought me into darkness and not light.

3. उसका हाथ दिन भर मेरे ही विरूद्ध उठता रहता है।

3. Surely He has turned away from me; His hand is against me all the day.

4. उस ने मेरा मांस और चमड़ा गला दिया है, और मेरी हडि्डयों को तोड़ दिया है;

4. My flesh and my skin has He worn out and made old; He has shattered my bones.

5. उस ने मुझे रोकने के लिये किला बनाया, और मुझ को कठिन दु:ख और श्रम से घेरा है;

5. He has built up [siege mounds] against me and surrounded me with bitterness, tribulation, and anguish.

6. उस ने मुझे बहुत दिन के मरे हुए लोगों के समान अन्धेरे स्थानों में बसा दिया है।

6. He has caused me to dwell in dark places like those long dead.

7. मेरे चारों ओर उस ने बाड़ा बान्धा है कि मैं निकल नहीं सकता; उस ने मुझे भारी सांकल से जकड़ा है;

7. He walled me in so that I cannot get out; He has weighted down my chain.

8. मैं चिल्ला चिल्लाके दोहाई देता हूँ, तौभी वह मेरी प्रार्थता नहीं सुनता;

8. Even when I cry and shout for help, He shuts out my prayer.

9. मेरे माग को उस ने गढ़े हुए पत्थरों से रोक रखा है, मेरी डगरों को उस ने टेढ़ी कर दिया है।

9. He has enclosed my ways with hewn stone; He has made my paths crooked.

10. वह मेरे लिये घात में बैठे हुए रीछ और घात लगाए हुए सिंह के समान है;

10. He is to me like a bear lying in wait, and like a lion [hiding] in secret places.

11. उस ने मुझे मेरे माग से भुला दिया, और मुझे फाड़ डाला; उस ने मुझ को उजाड़ दिया है।

11. He has turned me off my ways and pulled me in pieces; He has made me desolate.

12. उस ने धनुष चढ़ाकर मुझे अपने तीर का निशाना बनाया है।

12. He has bent His bow and set me as a mark for the arrow.

13. उस ने अपनी तीरों से मेरे हृदय को बेध दिया है;

13. He has caused the arrows of His quiver to enter into my heart [the seat of my affections and desires].

14. सब लोग मुझ पर हंसते हैं और दिन भर मुझ पर ढालकर गाीत गाते हैं,

14. I have become a derision to all my people, and [the subject of] their singsong all the day.

15. उस ने मुझे कठिन दु:ख से भर दिया, और नागदौना पिलाकर तृप्त किया है।

15. He has filled me with bitterness; He has made me drink to excess and until drunken with wormwood [bitterness].

16. उस ने मेरे दांतों को कंकरी से तोड़ डाला, और मुझे राख से ढांप दिया है;

16. He has also broken my teeth with gravel (stones); He has covered me with ashes.

17. और मुझ को मन से उतारकर कुशल से रहित किया है; मैं कल्याण भूल गया हूँ;

17. And You have bereaved my soul and cast it off far from peace; I have forgotten what good and happiness are.

18. इसलिऐ मैं ने कहा, मेरा बल नाश हुआ, और मेरी आश जो यहोवा पर थी, वह टूट गई है।

18. And I say, Perished is my strength and my expectation from the Lord.

19. मेरा दु:ख और मारा मारा फिरना, मेरा नागदौने और- और विष का पीना स्मरण कर !

19. [O Lord] remember [earnestly] my affliction and my misery, my wandering and my outcast state, the wormwood and the gall.

20. मैं उन्हीं पर सोचता रहता हूँ, इस से मेरा प्राण ढला जाता है।

20. My soul has them continually in remembrance and is bowed down within me.

21. परन्तु मैं यह स्मरण करता हूँ, इसीलिये मुझे आशा हैे

21. But this I recall and therefore have I hope and expectation:

22. हम मिट नहीं गए; यह यहोवा की महाकरूणा का फल है, क्योंकि उसकी दया अमर है।

22. It is because of the Lord's mercy and loving-kindness that we are not consumed, because His [tender] compassions fail not. [Mal. 3:6.]

23. प्रति भोर वह नई होती रहती है; तेरी सच्चाई महान है।

23. They are new every morning; great and abundant is Your stability and faithfulness. [Isa. 33:2.]

24. मेरे मन ने कहा, यहोवा मेरा भाग है, इस कारण मैं उस में आशा रखूंगा।

24. The Lord is my portion or share, says my living being (my inner self); therefore will I hope in Him and wait expectantly for Him. [Num. 18:20.]

25. जो यहोवा की बाट जोहते और उसके पास जाते हैं, उनके लिये यहोवा भला है।

25. The Lord is good to those who wait hopefully and expectantly for Him, to those who seek Him [inquire of and for Him and require Him by right of necessity and on the authority of God's word].

26. यहोवा से उठ्ठार पाने की आशा रखकर चुपचाप रहना भला है।

26. It is good that one should hope in and wait quietly for the salvation (the safety and ease) of the Lord.

27. पुरूष के लिये जवानी में जूआ उठाना भला है।

27. It is good for a man that he should bear the yoke [of divine disciplinary dealings] in his youth.

28. वह यह जानकर अकेला चुपचाप रहे, कि परमेश्वर ही ने उस पर यह बोझ डाला है;

28. Let him sit alone uncomplaining and keeping silent [in hope], because [God] has laid [the yoke] upon him [for his benefit]. [Rom. 8:28.]

29. वह अपना मुंह धूल में रखे, कया जाने इस में कुछ आशा हो;

29. Let him put his mouth in the dust [in abject recognition of his unworthiness]--there may yet be hope. [Mic. 7:17.]

30. वह अपना गाल अपने मारनेवाले की ओर फेरे, और नामधराई सहता रहे।

30. Let him give his cheek to the One Who smites him [even through His human agents]; let him be filled [full] with [men's] reproach [in meekness].

31. क्योंकि प्रभु मन से सर्वदा उतारे नहीं रहता,

31. For the Lord will not cast off forever! [Ps. 94:14.]

32. चाहे वह दु:ख भी दे, तौभी अपनी करूणा की बहुतायत के कारण वह दया भी करता है;

32. But though He causes grief, yet will He be moved to compassion according to the multitude of His loving-kindness and tender mercy.

33. क्योंकि वह मनुष्यों को अपने मन से न तो दबाता है और न दु:ख देता है।

33. For He does not willingly and from His heart afflict or grieve the children of men. [Ezek. 18:23, 32; Hos. 11:8; Heb. 12:5-10; II Pet. 3:9.]

34. पृथ्वी भर के बंधुओं को पांव के तले दलित करना,

34. To trample and crush underfoot all the prisoners of the earth,

35. किसी पुरूष का हक़ परमप्रधान के साम्हने मारना,

35. To turn aside and deprive a man of his rights before the face of the Most High or a superior [acting as God's representative],

36. और किसी मनुष्य का मुक़ मा बिगाड़ना, इन तीन कामों को यहोवा देख नहीं सकता।

36. To subvert a man in his cause--[of these things] the Lord does not approve.

37. यदि यहोवा ने आज्ञा न दी हो, तब कौन है कि वचन कहे और वह पूरा हो जाए?

37. Who is he who speaks and it comes to pass, if the Lord has not authorized and commanded it?

38. विपत्ति और कल्याण, क्या दोनों परमप्रधान की आज्ञा से नहीं होते?

38. Is it not out of the mouth of the Most High that evil and good both proceed [adversity and prosperity, physical evil or misfortune and physical good or happiness]?

39. सो जीवित मनुष्य क्यों कुड़कुड़ाए? और पुरूष अपने पाप के दण्ड को क्यों बुरा माने?

39. Why does a living man sigh [one who is still in this life's school of discipline]? [And why does] a man complain for the punishment of his sins?

40. हम अपने चालचलन को ध्यान से परखें, और यहोवा की ओर फिरें !

40. Let us test and examine our ways, and let us return to the Lord!

41. हम स्वर्गवासी परमेश्वर की ओर मन लगाएं और हाथ फैलाएं और कहेंे

41. Let us lift up our hearts and our hands [and then with them mount up in prayer] to God in heaven:

42. हम ने तो अपराध और बलवा किया है, और तू ने क्ष्मा नहीं किया।

42. We have transgressed and rebelled and You have not pardoned.

43. तेरा कोप हम पर है, तू हमारे पीछे पड़ा है, तू ने बिना तरस खाए घात किया है।

43. You have covered Yourself with wrath and pursued and afflicted us; You have slain without pity.

44. तू ने अपने को मेघ से घेर लिया है कि तुझ तक प्रार्थना न पहुंच सके।

44. You have covered Yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can pass through.

45. तू ने हम को जाति जाति के लोगों के बीच में कूड़ा- कर्कट सा ठहराया है।

45. You have made us offscouring and refuse among the nations.

46. हमारे सब शत्रुओं ने हम पर अपना अपना मुंह फैलाया है;

46. All our enemies have gaped at us and railed against us.

47. भय और गड़हा, उजाड़ और विनाश, हम पर आ पड़े हैं;

47. Fear and pitfall have come upon us, devastation and destruction.

48. मेरी आंखों से मेरी प्रजा की पुत्री के विनाश के कारण जल की धाराएं बह रही है।

48. My eyes overflow with streams of tears because of the destruction of the daughter of my people.

49. मेरी आंख से लगातार आंसू बहते रहेंगे,

49. My eyes overflow continually and will not cease

50. जब तक यहोवा स्वर्ग से मेरी ओर न देखे;

50. Until the Lord looks down and sees from heaven.

51. अपनी नगरी की सब स्त्रियों का हाल देखने पर मेरा दु:ख बढ़ता है।

51. My eyes cause me grief at the fate of all the maidens [and the daughter-towns] of my city [Jerusalem].

52. जो व्यर्थ मेरे शत्रु बने हैं, उन्हों ने निर्दयता से चिड़िया के समान मेरा आहेर किया है;

52. I have been hunted down like a bird by those who were my enemies without cause.

53. उन्हों ने मुझे गड़हे में डालकर मेरे जीवन का अन्त करने के लिये मेरे ऊपर पत्थर लुढ़काए हैं;

53. They [thought they had] destroyed my life in the dungeon (pit) and cast a stone [over it] above me. [Jer. 38.]

54. मेरे सिर पर से जल बह गया, मैं ने कहा, मैं अब नाश हो गया।

54. The waters ran down on my head; I said, I am gone.

55. हे यहोवा, गहिरे गड़हे में से मैं ने तुझ से प्रार्थना की;

55. I called upon Your name, O Lord, out of the depths [of the mire] of the dungeon. [Jer. 38:6.]

56. तू ने मेरी सुनी कि जो दोहाई देकर मैं चिल्लाता हूँ उस से कान न फेर ले !

56. You heard my voice [then]: [Oh] hide not Your ear [now] at my prayer for relief.

57. जब मैं ने तुझे पुकारा, तब तू ने मुझ से कहा, मत डर !

57. You drew near on the day I called to You; You said, Fear not. [James 4:8.]

58. हे यहोवा, तू ने मेरा मुक़ मा लड़कर मेरा प्राण बचा लिया है।

58. O Lord, You have pleaded the causes of my soul [You have managed my affairs and You have protected my person and my rights]; You have rescued and redeemed my life!

59. हे यहोवा, जो अन्याय मुझ पर हुआ है उसे तू ने देखा है; तू मेरा न्याय चुका।

59. O Lord, You have seen my wrong [done to me]; judge and maintain my cause.

60. जो बदला उन्हों ने मुझ से लिया, और जो कल्पनाएं मेरे विरूद्ध कीं, उन्हें भी तू ने देखा है।

60. You have seen all their vengeance, all their devices against me.

61. हे यहोवा, जो कल्पनाएं और निन्दा वे मेरे विरूद्ध करते हैं, वे भी तू ने सुनी हैं।

61. You have heard their reproach and revilings, O Lord, and all their devices against me--

62. मेरे विरोधियों के वचन, और जो कुछ भी वे मेरे विरूद्ध लगातार सोचते हैं, उन्हें तू जानता है।

62. The lips and thoughts of my assailants are against me all day long.

63. उनका उठना- बैठना ध्यान से देख; वे मुझ पर लगते हुए गीत गाते हैं।

63. Look at their sitting down and their rising up [their movements, doings, and secret counsels]; I am their singsong [the subject of their derision and merriment]. [Ps. 139:2; Isa. 37:28.]

64. हे यहोवा, तू उनके कामों के अनुसार उनको बदला देगा।

64. Render to them a recompense, O Lord, according to the work of their hands.

65. तू उनका मन सुन्न कर देगा; तेरा शाप उन पर होगा।

65. You will give them hardness and blindness of heart; Your curse will be upon them.

66. हे यहोवा, तू अपने कोप से उनको खदेड़- खदेड़कर धरती पर से नाश कर देगा।

66. You will pursue and afflict them in anger and destroy them from under Your heavens, O Lord.
