1. इस्राएलियों में से जितने कनान में की लड़ाईयों में भागी न हुए थे, उन्हें परखने के लिये यहोवा ने इन जातियों को देश में इसलिये रहने दिया;

1. Now, these, are the nations which Yahweh left, that he might, by them, put Israel to the proof, all who had not known any of the wars of Canaan;

2. कि पीढ़ी पीढ़ी के इस्राएलियों में से जो लड़ाई को पहिले न जानते थे वे सीखें, और जान लें,

2. that the generations of the sons of Israel might certainly get to know, by being taught to make war, such, at least, as aforetime knew nothing thereof:

3. अर्थात् पांचो सरदारों समेत पलिश्तियों, और सब कनानियों, और सीदोनियों, और बालहेर्मोन नाम पहाड़ से लेकर हमात की तराई तक लबानोन पर्वत में रहनेवाले हिव्वियों को।

3. five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Zidonians, and the Hivites dwelling in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-hermon as far as the entering in of Hamath.

4. ये इसलिये रहने पाए कि उनके द्वारा इस्राएलियों की बात में परीक्षा हो, कि जो आज्ञाएं यहोवा ने मूसा के द्वारा उनके पूर्वजों को दिलाई थीं, उन्हें वे मानेंगे वा नहीं।

4. So then these were left , that, by them, he might put Israel to the proof, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of Yahweh which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

5. इसलिये इस्राएली कनानियों, हित्तियों, एमोरियों, परिज्जियों, हिव्वियों, और यबूसियों के बीच में बस गए;

5. And thus, the sons of Israel, dwelt in the midst of the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites;

6. तब वे उनकी बेटियां ब्याह में लेने लगे, और अपनी बेटियां उनके बेटों को ब्याह मे देने लगे; और उनके देवताओं की भी उपासना करने लगे।।

6. and took their daughters to be their wives, their own daughters moreover, gave they unto their sons, and they served their gods.

7. इस प्रकार इस्राएलियों ने यहोवा की दृष्टि में बुरा किया, और अपने परमेश्वर यहोवा को भूलकर बाल नाम देवताओं और अशेरा नाम देवियों की उपासना करने लग गए।

7. Thus did the sons of Israel the thing that was wicked in the sight of Yahweh, and forgat Yahweh their God, and served the Baals and the Asherahs.

8. तब यहोवा का क्रोध इस्राएलियों पर भड़का, और उस ने उनको अरम्नहरैम के राजा कूशत्रिशातैम के अधीन कर दिया; सो इस्राएली आठ वर्ष तक कूशत्रिशातैम के अधीन में रहे।

8. Then kindled the anger of Yahweh upon Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim, king of Mesopotamia, and the sons of Israel served Chushan-rishathaim, eight years.

9. तब इस्राएलियों ने यहोवा की दोहाई दी, और उसने इस्राएलियों के लिये कालेब के छोटे भाई ओत्नीएल नाम एक कनजी छुड़ानेवाले को ठहराया, और उस ने उनको छुड़ाया।

9. And the sons of Israel made outcry unto Yahweh, so Yahweh raised up a saviour unto the sons of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

10. उस में यहोवा का आत्मा समाया, और वह इस्राएलियों का न्यायी बन गया, और लड़ने को निकला, और यहोवा ने अराम के राजा कूशत्रिशातैम को उसके हाथ में कर दिया; और वह कूशत्रिशातैम पर जयवन्त हुआ।

10. And the Spirit of Yahweh came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war, and Yahweh delivered into his hand, Chushan-rishathaim, king of Syria, and his hand prevailed over Chushan-rishathaim.

11. तब चालीस वर्ष तक देश में शान्ति बनी रही। और उन्हीं दिनों में कन्जी ओत्नीएल मर गया।।

11. And the land had rest forty years, and Othniel son of Kenaz, died.

12. तब इस्राएलियों ने फिर यहोवा की दृष्टि में बुरा किया; और यहोवा ने मोआब के राजा एग्लोन को इस्राएल पर प्रबल किया, क्योंकि उन्हों ने यहोवा की दृष्टि में बुरा किया था।

12. And the sons of Israel again did the thing that was wicked, in the sight of Yahweh, and Yahweh emboldened Eglon, king of Moab, against Israel, because they did the thing that was wicked in the sight of Yahweh;

13. इसलिये उस ने अम्मोनियों और अमालेकियों को अपने पास इकट्ठा किया, और जाकर इस्राएल को मार लिया; और खजूरवाले नगर को अपने वश में कर लिया।

13. and he gathered unto him, the sons of Ammon, and Amalek, and came and smote Israel, and took possession of the city of palm-trees.

14. तब इस्राएली अठारह वर्ष तक मोआब के राजा एग्लोन के अधीन में रहे।

14. So the sons of Israel served Eglon king of Moab, eighteen years.

15. फिर इस्राएलियों ने यहोवा की दोहाई दी, और उस ने गेरा के पुत्रा एहूद नाम एक बिन्यामीनी को उनका छुड़ानेवाला ठहराया; वह बैहत्था था। इस्राएलियों ने उसी के हाथ से मोआब के राजा एग्लोन के पास कुछ भेंट भेजी।

15. And the sons of Israel made outcry unto Yahweh, and Yahweh raised up unto them a saviour, Ehud son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man left-handed, and the sons of Israel sent, by his hand, a present, unto Eglon king of Moab.

16. एहूद ने हाथ भर लम्बी एक दोधारी तलवार बनवाई थी, और उसको अपने वस्त्रा के नीचे दाहिनी जांघ पर लटका लिया।

16. So Ehud made himself a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length, and girded it under his raiment, upon his right thigh.

17. तब वह उस भेंट को मोआब के राजा एग्लोन के पास जो बड़ा मोटा पुरूष था ले गया।

17. So he offered the present unto Eglon, king of Moab, now, Eglon, was an exceedingly fat man.

18. जब वह भेंट को दे चुका, तब भेंट के लानेवाले को विदा किया।

18. And so it was, when he had made an end of offering the present, that he sent away the people who had been bearing the present;

19. परन्तु वह आप गिलगाल के निकट की खुदी हुई मूरतों के पास लौट गया, और एग्लोन के पास कहला भेजा, कि हे राजा, मुझे तुझ से एक भेद की बात कहनी है। तब राजा ने कहा, थोड़ी देर के लिये बाहर जाओ। तब जितने लोग उसके पास उपस्थित थे वे सब बाहर चले गए।

19. but, he himself, turned back from the images that were by Gilgal, and said, A secret word, have I, unto thee, O king! And he said Silence! Thereupon went out from his presence all who had been standing near him.

20. तब एहूद उसके पास गया; वह तो अपनी एक हवादार अटारी में अकेला बैठा था। एहूद ने कहा, परमेश्वर की ओर से मुझे तुझ से एक बात कहनी है। तब वह गद्दी पर से उठ खड़ा हुआ।

20. And, Ehud, came in unto him, he, having been sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself, alone, and Ehud said, A divine word, have I, unto thee. So he arose from off his seat.

21. इतने में एहूद ने अपना बायां हाथ बढ़ाकर अपनी दाहिनी जांघ पर से तलवार खींचकर उसकी तोंद में घुसेड़ दी;

21. And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the sword from off his right thigh, and thrust it into his body;

22. और फल के पीछे मूठ भी पैठ गई, ओर फल चर्बी में धंसा रहा, क्योंकि उस ने तलवार को उसकी तोंद में से न निकाला; वरन वह उसके आरपार निकल गई।

22. and, the handle also, went in after the blade, and the flesh closed upon the blade, for he withdrew not the sword out of his body, and he came out into the ante-chamber.

23. तब एहूद छज्जे से निकलकर बाहर गया, और अटारी के किवाड़ खींचकर उसको बन्द करके ताला लगा दिया।

23. And, when Ehud came out into the porch, he closed the doors of the parlour upon him, and bolted them.

24. उसके निकल जाते ही राजा के दास आए, तो क्या देखते हैं, कि अटारी के किवाड़ों में ताला लगा है; इस कारण वे बोले, कि निश्चय वह हवादार कोठरी में लघुशंका करता होगा।

24. When, he, had come out, his servants, went in, and looked, and lo! the doors of the parlour were bolted, so they said, Surely he covereth his feet, in the summer chamber.

25. वे बाट जोहते जोहते लज्जित हो गए; तब यह देखकर कि वह अटारी के किवाड़ नहीं खोलता, उन्हों ने कुंजी लेकर किवाड़ खोले तो क्या देखा, कि उनका स्वामी भूमि पर मरा पड़ा है।

25. But, though they tarried a long time, yet lo! he opened not the doors of the parlour, so they took the key, and opened them , when lo! their lord, fallen to the ground dead.

26. जब तक वे सोच विचार कर ही रहे थे तब तक एहूद भाग निकला, और खूदी हुई मूरतों की परली ओर होकर सेइरे में जाकर शरण ली।

26. But, Ehud, escaped while they delayed, yea, he, passed the images, and escaped into Seirah.

27. वहां पहुंचकर उस ने एप्रैम के पहाड़ी देश में नरसिंगा फूंका; तब इस्राएली उसके संग होकर पहाड़ी देश से उसके पीछे पीछे नीचे गए।

27. And so it was, when he came, that he blew with a horn, throughout the hill country of Ephraim, and the sons of Israel came down with him, out of the hill country, he, being before them.

28. और उस ने उन से कहा, मेरे पीछे पीछे चले आओ; क्योंकि यहोवा ने तुम्हारे मोआबी शत्रुओं को तुम्हारे हाथ में कर दिया है। तब उन्हों ने उसके पीछे पीछे जाके यरदन के घाटों को जो मोआब देश की ओर है ले लिया, और किसी को उतरने न दिया।

28. And he said unto them Come down after me, for Yahweh hath delivered your enemies, the Moabites, into your hand. So they came down after him, and captured the fords of the Jordan, towards Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.

29. उस समय उन्हों ने कोई दस हजार मोआबियों को मार डाला; वे सब के सब हृष्ट पुष्ट और शूरवीर थे, परन्तु उन में से एक भी न बचा।

29. And they smote of Moab, at that time, about ten thousand men, every one a mighty man, and every one a man of valour, and, there escaped not a man.

30. इस प्रकार उस समय मोआब इस्राएल के हाथ के तले दब गया। तब अस्सी वर्ष तक देश में शान्ति बनी रही।।

30. And Moab was subdued on that day, under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest eighty years, and Ehud judged them until his death.

31. उसके बाद अनात का पुत्रा शमगर हुआ, उस ने छ: सौ पलिश्ती पुरूषों को बैल के पैने से मार डाला; इस कारण वह भी इस्राएल का छुड़ानेवाला हुआ।।

31. And, after him, was Shamgar, son of Anath, who smote of the Philistines, six hundred men, with an ox-goad, and, he also, saved Israel.
