1. तब अरयूब ने कहा,

1. Job answered, and said:

2. चित्त लगाकर मेरी बात सुनो; और तुम्हारी शान्ति यही ठहरे।

2. O hear my words, and amend yourselves.

3. मेरी कुछ तो सहो, कि मैं भी बातें करूं; और जब मैं बातें कर चुकूं, तब पीछे ठट्ठा करना।

3. Suffer me a little, that I may speak also, and then laugh my words to scorn, if ye will.

4. क्या मैं किसी मनुष्य की दोहाई देता हूँ? फिर मैं अधीर क्यों न होऊं?

4. Is it with a man, that I make this disputation? Which if it were so, should not my spirit be then in sore trouble?

5. मेरी ओर चित्त लगाकर चकित हो, और अपनी अपनी उंगली दांत तले दबाओ।

5. Mark me well, be abashed, and lay your hand upon your mouth.

6. जब मैं स्मरण करता तब मैं घबरा जाता हूँ, और मेरी देह में कंपकंपी लगती है।

6. For when I ponder and consider this, I am afraid, and my flesh is smitten with fear.

7. क्या कारण है कि दुष्ट लोग जीवित रहते हैं, वरन बूढ़े भी हो जाते, और उनका धन बढ़ता जाता है?

7. Wherefore do wicked men live in health and prosperity, come to their old age, and increase in riches?

8. उनकी सन्तान उनके संग, और उनके बालबच्चे उनकी आंखों के साम्हने बने रहते हैं।

8. Their children's children live in their sight, and their generation before their eyes.

9. उनके घर में भयरहित कुशल रहता है, और ईश्वर की छड़ी उन पर नहीं पड़ती।

9. Their houses are safe from all fear, for the rod of God doth not smite them.

10. उनका सांड़ गाभिन करता और चूकता नहीं, उनकी गायें बियाती हैं और बच्चा कभी नहीं गिरातीं।

10. Their bullock gendereth, and that not out of time: their cow calveth, and is not unfruitful.

11. वे अपने लड़कों को झुणड के झुणड बाहर जाने देते हैं, और उनके बच्चे नाचते हैं।

11. They send forth their children by flocks, and their sons lead the dance.

12. वे डफ और वीणा बजाते हुए गाते, और बांसुरी के शब्द से आनन्दित होते हैं।

12. They bear with them taberetts and harps, and have instruments of music at their pleasure.

13. वे अपने दिन सुख से बिताते, और पल भर ही में अधोलोक में उतर जाते हैं।

13. They spend their days in wealthiness: but suddenly they go down to hell.

14. तौभी वे ईश्वर से कहते थे, कि हम से दूर हो ! तेरी गति जानने की हम को इच्छा नहीं रहती।

14. They say unto God: go from us, we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.

15. सर्वशक्तिमान क्या है, कि हम उसकी सेवा करें? और जो हम उस से बिनती भी करें तो हमें क्या लाभ होगा?

15. What manner of fellow is the Almighty, that we should serve him? What profit should we have, to submit our selves unto him?

16. देखो, उनका कुशल उनके हाथ में नहीं रहती, दुष्ट लोगों का विचार मुझ से दूर रहे।

16. Lo, there is utterly no goodness in them, therefore will not I have to do with the counsel of the ungodly.

17. कितनी बार दुष्टों का दीपक बुझ जाता है, और उन पर विपत्ति आ पड़ती है; और ईश्वर क्रोध करके उनके बांट में शोक देता है,

17. How oft shall the candle of the wicked be put out? How oft cometh their destruction upon them? Oh what sorrow shall God give them for their part in his wrath.

18. और वे वायु से उड़ाए हुए भूसे की, और बवणडर से उड़ाई हुई भूसी की नाई होते हैं।

18. Yea they shall be even as chaff before the wind, and as dust that the storm carrieth away.

19. ईश्वर उसके अधर्म का दणड उसके लड़केबालों के लिये रख छोड़ता है, वह उसका बदला उसी को दे, ताकि वह जान ले।

19. And though God save their children from such sorrow, yet will he so reward themselves, that they shall know it.

20. दुष्ट अपना नाश अपनी ही आंखों से देखे, और सर्वशक्तिमान की जलजलाहट में से आप पी ले।

20. Their own destruction and misery shall they see with their eyes, and drink of the fearful wrath of the Almighty.

21. क्योंकि जब उसके महीनों की गिनती कट चुकी, तो अपने बादवाले घराने से उसका क्या काम रहा।

21. For what careth he, what be come of his household after his death? Whose months pass away swifter than an arrow.

22. क्या ईश्वर को कोई ज्ञान सिखाएगा? वह तो ऊंचे पद पर रहनेवालों का भी न्याय करता है।

22. In as much then as God hath the highest(hyest) power of all, who can teach him any knowledge?

23. कोई तो अपने पूरे बल में बड़े चैन और सुख से रहता हुआ मर जाता है।

23. One dieth now when he is mighty and at his best, rich, and in prosperity:

24. उसकी दोहनियां दूध से और उसकी हडि्डयां गूदे से भरी रहती हैं।

24. even when his bowels are at the fattest, and his bones full of merry.

25. और कोई अपने जीव में कुढ़ कुढ़कर बिना सुख भोगे मर जाता है।

25. An other dieth in sorrow and heaviness, and never had good days.

26. वे दोनों बराबर मिट्टी में मिल जाते हैं, और कीड़े उन्हें ढांक लेते हैं।

26. Now sleep they both alike in the earth, and the worms cover them.

27. देखो, मैं तुम्हारी कल्पनाएं जानता हूँ, और उन युक्तियों को भी, जो तुम मेरे विषय में अन्याय से करते हो।

27. But I know what ye think, yea and what ye imagine against me unrighteously.

28. तुम कहते तो हो कि रईस का घर कहां रहा? दुष्टों के निवास के डेरे कहां रहे?

28. For ye say: Where is the prince's palace? where is the dwelling of the ungodly:

29. परन्तु क्या तुम ने बटोहियों से कभी नहीं पूछा? क्या तुम उनके इस विषय के प्रमाणों से अनजान हो,

29. Ask any man that goeth by the way, and (if ye will not regard their tokens and deeds) he shall tell you,

30. कि विपत्ति के दिन के लिये दुर्जन रखा जाता है; और महाप्रलय के समय के लिये ऐसे लोग बचाए जाते हैं?

30. that the wicked is kept unto the day of destruction, and that the ungodly shall be brought forth in the day of wrath.

31. उसकी चाल उसके मुंह पर कौन कहेगा? और उस ने जो किया है, उसका पलटा कौन देगा?

31. Who dare reprove him for his ways to his face? Who rewardeth him for the ungraciousness that he doth?

32. तौभी वह क़ब्र को पहुंचाया जाता है, और लोग उस क़ब्र की रखवाली रिते रहते हैं।

32. Yet shall he be brought to his grave, and watch among the heap of the dead.

33. नाले के ढेले उसको सुखदायक लगते हैं; और जैसे पूर्वकाल के लोग अनगिनित जा चुके, वैसे ही सब मनुष्य उसके बाद भी चले जाएंगे।

33. Then shall he be fain to be buried among the stones by the brook side. All men must follow him, and there are innumerable gone before him.

34. तुम्हारे उत्तरों में तो झूठ ही पाया जाता है, इसलिये तुम क्यों मुझे व्यर्थ शान्ति देते हो?

34. O how vain is the comfort that ye give me? Are not your answers clean contrary to right and truth?
