1. तब अरयूब ने कहा,

2. चित्त लगाकर मेरी बात सुनो; और तुम्हारी शान्ति यही ठहरे।

2. 'Listen carefully to my words; let this be the comfort you give me.

3. मेरी कुछ तो सहो, कि मैं भी बातें करूं; और जब मैं बातें कर चुकूं, तब पीछे ठट्ठा करना।

3. Bear with me as I speak; then, after I have spoken, you can go on mocking.

4. क्या मैं किसी मनुष्य की दोहाई देता हूँ? फिर मैं अधीर क्यों न होऊं?

4. 'As for me, is my complaint merely to other people? Don't I have grounds for being short-tempered?

5. मेरी ओर चित्त लगाकर चकित हो, और अपनी अपनी उंगली दांत तले दबाओ।

5. Look at me, and be appalled; cover your mouth with your hand!

6. जब मैं स्मरण करता तब मैं घबरा जाता हूँ, और मेरी देह में कंपकंपी लगती है।

6. Whenever I recall it, I am in shock; my whole body shudders.

7. क्या कारण है कि दुष्ट लोग जीवित रहते हैं, वरन बूढ़े भी हो जाते, और उनका धन बढ़ता जाता है?

7. 'Why do the wicked go on living, grow old and keep increasing their power?

8. उनकी सन्तान उनके संग, और उनके बालबच्चे उनकी आंखों के साम्हने बने रहते हैं।

8. They see their children settled with them, their posterity assured.

9. उनके घर में भयरहित कुशल रहता है, और ईश्वर की छड़ी उन पर नहीं पड़ती।

9. Their houses are safe, with nothing to fear; God's rod is not on them.

10. उनका सांड़ गाभिन करता और चूकता नहीं, उनकी गायें बियाती हैं और बच्चा कभी नहीं गिरातीं।

10. Their bulls are fertile without fail, their cows get pregnant and don't miscarry.

11. वे अपने लड़कों को झुणड के झुणड बाहर जाने देते हैं, और उनके बच्चे नाचते हैं।

11. They produce flocks of babies, and their children dance around.

12. वे डफ और वीणा बजाते हुए गाते, और बांसुरी के शब्द से आनन्दित होते हैं।

12. They sing with tambourines and lyres and rejoice to the sound of the pipe.

13. वे अपने दिन सुख से बिताते, और पल भर ही में अधोलोक में उतर जाते हैं।

13. They spend their days in prosperity and go down to the grave in peace.

14. तौभी वे ईश्वर से कहते थे, कि हम से दूर हो ! तेरी गति जानने की हम को इच्छा नहीं रहती।

14. 'Yet to God they said, 'Leave us alone! We don't want to know about your ways.

15. सर्वशक्तिमान क्या है, कि हम उसकी सेवा करें? और जो हम उस से बिनती भी करें तो हमें क्या लाभ होगा?

15. What is [Shaddai], that we should serve him? What do we gain if we pray to him?'

16. देखो, उनका कुशल उनके हाथ में नहीं रहती, दुष्ट लोगों का विचार मुझ से दूर रहे।

16. Isn't their prosperity already theirs? The plans of the wicked are far from me.

17. कितनी बार दुष्टों का दीपक बुझ जाता है, और उन पर विपत्ति आ पड़ती है; और ईश्वर क्रोध करके उनके बांट में शोक देता है,

17. How often is the lamp of the wicked put out? How often does their calamity come upon them? How often does [[God]] deal out pain in his anger,

18. और वे वायु से उड़ाए हुए भूसे की, और बवणडर से उड़ाई हुई भूसी की नाई होते हैं।

18. to make them like straw in the wind, like chaff carried off by a storm?

19. ईश्वर उसके अधर्म का दणड उसके लड़केबालों के लिये रख छोड़ता है, वह उसका बदला उसी को दे, ताकि वह जान ले।

19. God lays up for their children [[the punishment for their]] iniquity. He should lay it on [[the wicked]] themselves, so that they can feel it!

20. दुष्ट अपना नाश अपनी ही आंखों से देखे, और सर्वशक्तिमान की जलजलाहट में से आप पी ले।

20. Let their own eyes see their own destruction and themselves drink the wrath of [Shaddai.]

21. क्योंकि जब उसके महीनों की गिनती कट चुकी, तो अपने बादवाले घराने से उसका क्या काम रहा।

21. What joy can they have in their family after them, given that their months are numbered?

22. क्या ईश्वर को कोई ज्ञान सिखाएगा? वह तो ऊंचे पद पर रहनेवालों का भी न्याय करता है।

22. 'Can anyone teach God knowledge? After all, he judges those who are on high.

23. कोई तो अपने पूरे बल में बड़े चैन और सुख से रहता हुआ मर जाता है।

23. One person dies in his full strength, completely at ease and content;

24. उसकी दोहनियां दूध से और उसकी हडि्डयां गूदे से भरी रहती हैं।

24. his pails are full of milk, and the marrow in his bones is moist.

25. और कोई अपने जीव में कुढ़ कुढ़कर बिना सुख भोगे मर जाता है।

25. Another dies with embittered heart, never having tasted happiness.

26. वे दोनों बराबर मिट्टी में मिल जाते हैं, और कीड़े उन्हें ढांक लेते हैं।

26. They lie down alike in the dust, and the worm covers them both.

27. देखो, मैं तुम्हारी कल्पनाएं जानता हूँ, और उन युक्तियों को भी, जो तुम मेरे विषय में अन्याय से करते हो।

27. Look, I know what you are thinking and your plans to do me wrong.

28. तुम कहते तो हो कि रईस का घर कहां रहा? दुष्टों के निवास के डेरे कहां रहे?

28. You ask, 'Where is the great man's house? Where is the tent where the wicked once lived?'

29. परन्तु क्या तुम ने बटोहियों से कभी नहीं पूछा? क्या तुम उनके इस विषय के प्रमाणों से अनजान हो,

29. Haven't you ever questioned travelers? Don't you accept their testimony

30. कि विपत्ति के दिन के लिये दुर्जन रखा जाता है; और महाप्रलय के समय के लिये ऐसे लोग बचाए जाते हैं?

30. that the evil man is saved on the day of disaster, rescued on the day of wrath?

31. उसकी चाल उसके मुंह पर कौन कहेगा? और उस ने जो किया है, उसका पलटा कौन देगा?

31. So who will confront him with his ways? Who will repay him for what he has done?

32. तौभी वह क़ब्र को पहुंचाया जाता है, और लोग उस क़ब्र की रखवाली रिते रहते हैं।

32. For he is carried off to the grave, people keep watch over his tomb,

33. नाले के ढेले उसको सुखदायक लगते हैं; और जैसे पूर्वकाल के लोग अनगिनित जा चुके, वैसे ही सब मनुष्य उसके बाद भी चले जाएंगे।

33. the clods of the valley are sweet to him; so everyone follows his example, just as before him were countless others.

34. तुम्हारे उत्तरों में तो झूठ ही पाया जाता है, इसलिये तुम क्यों मुझे व्यर्थ शान्ति देते हो?

34. 'Why offer me such meaningless comfort? Of your answers, only the perfidy remains.'
