1. तब अरयूब ने कहा,

1. Then Job said in reply:

2. चित्त लगाकर मेरी बात सुनो; और तुम्हारी शान्ति यही ठहरे।

2. At least listen to my words, and let that be the consolation you offer.

3. मेरी कुछ तो सहो, कि मैं भी बातें करूं; और जब मैं बातें कर चुकूं, तब पीछे ठट्ठा करना।

3. Bear with me while I speak; and after I have spoken, you can mock!

4. क्या मैं किसी मनुष्य की दोहाई देता हूँ? फिर मैं अधीर क्यों न होऊं?

4. Is my complaint toward man? And why should I not be impatient?

5. मेरी ओर चित्त लगाकर चकित हो, और अपनी अपनी उंगली दांत तले दबाओ।

5. Look at me and be astonished, put your hands over your mouths.

6. जब मैं स्मरण करता तब मैं घबरा जाता हूँ, और मेरी देह में कंपकंपी लगती है।

6. When I think of it, I am dismayed, and horror takes hold on my flesh.

7. क्या कारण है कि दुष्ट लोग जीवित रहते हैं, वरन बूढ़े भी हो जाते, और उनका धन बढ़ता जाता है?

7. Why do the wicked survive, grow old, become mighty in power?

8. उनकी सन्तान उनके संग, और उनके बालबच्चे उनकी आंखों के साम्हने बने रहते हैं।

8. Their progeny is secure in their sight; they see before them their kinsfolk and their offspring.

9. उनके घर में भयरहित कुशल रहता है, और ईश्वर की छड़ी उन पर नहीं पड़ती।

9. Their homes are safe and without fear, nor is the scourge of God upon them.

10. उनका सांड़ गाभिन करता और चूकता नहीं, उनकी गायें बियाती हैं और बच्चा कभी नहीं गिरातीं।

10. Their bulls gender without fail; their cows calve and do not miscarry.

11. वे अपने लड़कों को झुणड के झुणड बाहर जाने देते हैं, और उनके बच्चे नाचते हैं।

11. These folk have infants numerous as lambs, and their children dance.

12. वे डफ और वीणा बजाते हुए गाते, और बांसुरी के शब्द से आनन्दित होते हैं।

12. They sing to the timbrel and harp, and make merry to the sound of the flute.

13. वे अपने दिन सुख से बिताते, और पल भर ही में अधोलोक में उतर जाते हैं।

13. They live out their days in prosperity, and tranquilly go down to the nether world.

14. तौभी वे ईश्वर से कहते थे, कि हम से दूर हो ! तेरी गति जानने की हम को इच्छा नहीं रहती।

14. Yet they say to God, 'Depart from us, for we have no wish to learn your ways!

15. सर्वशक्तिमान क्या है, कि हम उसकी सेवा करें? और जो हम उस से बिनती भी करें तो हमें क्या लाभ होगा?

15. What is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what gain shall we have if we pray to him?'

16. देखो, उनका कुशल उनके हाथ में नहीं रहती, दुष्ट लोगों का विचार मुझ से दूर रहे।

16. If their happiness is not in their own hands and if the counsel of the wicked is repulsive to God,

17. कितनी बार दुष्टों का दीपक बुझ जाता है, और उन पर विपत्ति आ पड़ती है; और ईश्वर क्रोध करके उनके बांट में शोक देता है,

17. How often is the lamp of the wicked put out? How often does destruction come upon them, the portion he allots in his anger?

18. और वे वायु से उड़ाए हुए भूसे की, और बवणडर से उड़ाई हुई भूसी की नाई होते हैं।

18. Let them be like straw before the wind, and like chaff which the storm snatches away!

19. ईश्वर उसके अधर्म का दणड उसके लड़केबालों के लिये रख छोड़ता है, वह उसका बदला उसी को दे, ताकि वह जान ले।

19. May God not store up the man's misery for his children; let him requite the man himself so that he feels it,

20. दुष्ट अपना नाश अपनी ही आंखों से देखे, और सर्वशक्तिमान की जलजलाहट में से आप पी ले।

20. Let his own eyes see the calamity, and the wrath of the Almighty let him drink!

21. क्योंकि जब उसके महीनों की गिनती कट चुकी, तो अपने बादवाले घराने से उसका क्या काम रहा।

21. For what interest has he in his family after him, when the number of his months is finished?

22. क्या ईश्वर को कोई ज्ञान सिखाएगा? वह तो ऊंचे पद पर रहनेवालों का भी न्याय करता है।

22. Can anyone teach God knowledge, seeing that he judges those on high?

23. कोई तो अपने पूरे बल में बड़े चैन और सुख से रहता हुआ मर जाता है।

23. One dies in his full vigor, wholly at ease and content;

24. उसकी दोहनियां दूध से और उसकी हडि्डयां गूदे से भरी रहती हैं।

24. His figure is full and nourished, and his bones are rich in marrow.

25. और कोई अपने जीव में कुढ़ कुढ़कर बिना सुख भोगे मर जाता है।

25. Another dies in bitterness of soul, having never tasted happiness.

26. वे दोनों बराबर मिट्टी में मिल जाते हैं, और कीड़े उन्हें ढांक लेते हैं।

26. Alike they lie down in the dust, and worms cover them both.

27. देखो, मैं तुम्हारी कल्पनाएं जानता हूँ, और उन युक्तियों को भी, जो तुम मेरे विषय में अन्याय से करते हो।

27. Behold, I know your thoughts, and the arguments you rehearse against me.

28. तुम कहते तो हो कि रईस का घर कहां रहा? दुष्टों के निवास के डेरे कहां रहे?

28. For you say, 'Where is the house of the magnate, and where the dwelling place of the wicked?'

29. परन्तु क्या तुम ने बटोहियों से कभी नहीं पूछा? क्या तुम उनके इस विषय के प्रमाणों से अनजान हो,

29. Have you not asked the wayfarers and do you not recognize their monuments?

30. कि विपत्ति के दिन के लिये दुर्जन रखा जाता है; और महाप्रलय के समय के लिये ऐसे लोग बचाए जाते हैं?

30. Nay, the evil man is spared calamity when it comes;

31. उसकी चाल उसके मुंह पर कौन कहेगा? और उस ने जो किया है, उसका पलटा कौन देगा?

31. Who will charge him with his conduct to his face, and for what he has done who will repay him?

32. तौभी वह क़ब्र को पहुंचाया जाता है, और लोग उस क़ब्र की रखवाली रिते रहते हैं।

32. and on the day he is carried to the grave

33. नाले के ढेले उसको सुखदायक लगते हैं; और जैसे पूर्वकाल के लोग अनगिनित जा चुके, वैसे ही सब मनुष्य उसके बाद भी चले जाएंगे।

33. Sweet to him are the clods of the valley, and over him the funeral mound keeps watch, While all the line of mankind follows him, and the countless others who have gone before.

34. तुम्हारे उत्तरों में तो झूठ ही पाया जाता है, इसलिये तुम क्यों मुझे व्यर्थ शान्ति देते हो?

34. How then can you offer me vain comfort, while in your answers perfidy remains?
