1. मेरा प्राण जीवित रहने से उकताता है; मैं स्वतंत्राता पूर्वक कुड़कुड़ाऊंगा; और मैं अपने मन की कड़वाहट के मारे बातें करूंगा।

1. My soul hath been weary of my life, I leave off my talking to myself, I speak in the bitterness of my soul.

2. मै ईश्वर से कहूंगा, मुझे दोषी न ठहरा; मुझे बता दे, कि तू किस कारण मूझ से मुक़ मा लड़ता है?

2. I say unto God, 'Do not condemn me, Let me know why Thou dost strive [with] me.

3. क्या तुझे अन्धेर करना, और दुष्टों की युक्ति को सुफल करके अपने हाथों के बनाए हुए को निकम्मा जानना भला लगता है?

3. Is it good for Thee that Thou dost oppress? That Thou despisest the labour of Thy hands, And on the counsel of the wicked hast shone?

4. क्या तेरी देश्धारियों की सी बांखें है? और क्या तेरा देखना मनुष्य का सा है?

4. Eyes of flesh hast Thou? As man seeth -- seest Thou?

5. क्या तेरे दिन मनुष्य के दिन के समान हैं, वा तेरे वर्ष पुरूष के समयों के तुल्य हैं,

5. As the days of man [are] Thy days? Thy years as the days of a man?

6. कि तू मेरा अधर्म ढूंढ़ता, और मेरा पाप पूछता है?

6. That Thou inquirest for mine iniquity, And for my sin seekest?

7. तुझे तो मालूम ही है, कि मैं दुष्ट नहीं हूँ, और तेरे हाथ से कोई छुड़ानेवाला नहीं !

7. For Thou knowest that I am not wicked, And there is no deliverer from Thy hand.

8. तू ने अपने हाथों से मुझे ठीक रचा है और जोड़कर बनाया है; तौभी मुझे नाश किए डालता है।

8. Thy hands have taken pains about me, And they make me together round about, And Thou swallowest me up!

9. स्मरण कर, कि तू ने मुझ को गून्धी हुई मिट्टी की नाई बनाया, क्या तू मुझे फिर धूल में मिलाएगा?

9. Remember, I pray Thee, That as clay Thou hast made me, And unto dust Thou dost bring me back.

10. क्या तू ने मुझे दूध की नाई उंडेलकर, और दही के समान जमाकर नहीं बनाया?

10. Dost Thou not as milk pour me out? And as cheese curdle me?

11. फिर तू ने मुझ पर चमड़ा और मांस चढ़ाया और हडि्डयां और नसें गूंथकर मुझे बनाया है।

11. Skin and flesh Thou dost put on me, And with bones and sinews dost fence me.

12. तू ने मुझे जीवन दिया, और मुझ पर करूणा की है; और तेरी चौकसी से मेरे प्राण की रक्षा हई है।

12. Life and kindness Thou hast done with me. And Thy inspection hath preserved my spirit.

13. तौभी तू ने ऐसी बातों को अपने मन में छिपा रखा; मैं तो जान गया, कि तू ने ऐसा ही करने को ठाना था।

13. And these Thou hast laid up in Thy heart, I have known that this [is] with Thee.

14. जो मैं पाप करूं, तो तू उसका लेखा लेगा; और अधर्म करने पर मुझे निदष न ठहराएगा।

14. If I sinned, then Thou hast observed me, And from mine iniquity dost not acquit me,

15. जो मैं दुष्टता करूं तो मुझ पर हाय ! और जो मैं धम बनूं तौभी मैं सिर न उठाऊंगा, क्योंकि मैं अपमान से भरा हुआ हूं और अपने दु:ख पर ध्यान रखता हूँ।

15. If I have done wickedly -- woe to me, And righteously -- I lift not up my head, Full of shame -- then see my affliction,

16. और चाहे सिर उठाऊं तौभी तू सिंह की नाई मेरा अहेर करता है, और फिर मेरे विरूद्ध आश्चर्यकर्म करता है।

16. And it riseth -- as a lion Thou huntest me. And Thou turnest back -- Thou shewest Thyself wonderful in me.

17. तू मेरे साम्हने अपने नये नये साक्षी ले आता है, और मुझ पर अपना क्रोध बढ़ाता है; और मुझ पर सेना पर सेना चढ़ाई करती है।

17. Thou renewest Thy witnesses against me, And dost multiply Thine anger with me, Changes and warfare [are] with me.

18. तू ने मुझे गर्भ से क्यों निकाला? नहीं तो मैं वहीं प्राण छोड़ता, और कोई मुझे देखने भी न पाता।

18. And why from the womb Hast Thou brought me forth? I expire, and the eye doth not see me.

19. मेरा होना न होने के समान होता, और पेट ही से क़ब्र को पहुंचाया जाता।

19. As I had not been, I am, From the belly to the grave I am brought,

20. क्या मेरे दिन थोड़े नहीं? मुझे छोड़ दे, और मेरी ओर से मुंह फेर ले, कि मेरा मन थोड़ा शान्त हो जाए

20. Are not my days few? Cease then, and put from me, And I brighten up a little,

21. इस से पहिले कि मैं वहां जाऊं, जहां से फिर न लौटूंगा, अर्थात् अन्धियारे और धोर अन्धकार के देश में, जहां अन्धकार ही अन्धकार है;

21. Before I go, and return not, Unto a land of darkness and death-shade,

22. और मृत्यु के अन्धकार का देश जिस में सब कुछ गड़बड़ है; और जहां प्रकाश भी ऐसा है जैसा अन्धकार।

22. A land of obscurity as thick darkness, Death-shade -- and no order, And the shining [is] as thick darkness.'
