1. मेरा प्राण जीवित रहने से उकताता है; मैं स्वतंत्राता पूर्वक कुड़कुड़ाऊंगा; और मैं अपने मन की कड़वाहट के मारे बातें करूंगा।

1. Since I have lost all taste for life, I shall give free rein to my complaining; I shall let my embittered soul speak out.

2. मै ईश्वर से कहूंगा, मुझे दोषी न ठहरा; मुझे बता दे, कि तू किस कारण मूझ से मुक़ मा लड़ता है?

2. I shall say to God, 'Do not condemn me, tell me what your case is against me.

3. क्या तुझे अन्धेर करना, और दुष्टों की युक्ति को सुफल करके अपने हाथों के बनाए हुए को निकम्मा जानना भला लगता है?

3. Is it right for you to attack me, in contempt for what you yourself have made, thus abetting the schemes of the wicked?

4. क्या तेरी देश्धारियों की सी बांखें है? और क्या तेरा देखना मनुष्य का सा है?

4. Are your eyes mere human eyes, do you see as human beings see?

5. क्या तेरे दिन मनुष्य के दिन के समान हैं, वा तेरे वर्ष पुरूष के समयों के तुल्य हैं,

5. Are you mortal like human beings? do your years pass as human days pass?

6. कि तू मेरा अधर्म ढूंढ़ता, और मेरा पाप पूछता है?

6. You, who enquire into my faults and investigate my sins,

7. तुझे तो मालूम ही है, कि मैं दुष्ट नहीं हूँ, और तेरे हाथ से कोई छुड़ानेवाला नहीं !

7. you know very well that I am innocent, and that no one can rescue me from your grasp.

8. तू ने अपने हाथों से मुझे ठीक रचा है और जोड़कर बनाया है; तौभी मुझे नाश किए डालता है।

8. Your hands having shaped and created me, now you change your mind and mean to destroy me!

9. स्मरण कर, कि तू ने मुझ को गून्धी हुई मिट्टी की नाई बनाया, क्या तू मुझे फिर धूल में मिलाएगा?

9. Having made me, remember, as though of clay, now you mean to turn me back into dust!

10. क्या तू ने मुझे दूध की नाई उंडेलकर, और दही के समान जमाकर नहीं बनाया?

10. Did you not pour me out like milk, and then let me thicken like curds,

11. फिर तू ने मुझ पर चमड़ा और मांस चढ़ाया और हडि्डयां और नसें गूंथकर मुझे बनाया है।

11. clothe me with skin and flesh, and weave me of bone and sinew?

12. तू ने मुझे जीवन दिया, और मुझ पर करूणा की है; और तेरी चौकसी से मेरे प्राण की रक्षा हई है।

12. In your love you gave me life, and in your care watched over my every breath.

13. तौभी तू ने ऐसी बातों को अपने मन में छिपा रखा; मैं तो जान गया, कि तू ने ऐसा ही करने को ठाना था।

13. Yet, all the while, you had a secret plan: I know that you were biding your time

14. जो मैं पाप करूं, तो तू उसका लेखा लेगा; और अधर्म करने पर मुझे निदष न ठहराएगा।

14. to see if I should sin and then not acquit me of my faults.

15. जो मैं दुष्टता करूं तो मुझ पर हाय ! और जो मैं धम बनूं तौभी मैं सिर न उठाऊंगा, क्योंकि मैं अपमान से भरा हुआ हूं और अपने दु:ख पर ध्यान रखता हूँ।

15. Woe to me, if I am guilty; even if I am upright, I dare not lift my head, so overwhelmed with shame and drunk with pain am I!

16. और चाहे सिर उठाऊं तौभी तू सिंह की नाई मेरा अहेर करता है, और फिर मेरे विरूद्ध आश्चर्यकर्म करता है।

16. Proud as a lion, you hunt me down, multiplying your exploits at my expense,

17. तू मेरे साम्हने अपने नये नये साक्षी ले आता है, और मुझ पर अपना क्रोध बढ़ाता है; और मुझ पर सेना पर सेना चढ़ाई करती है।

17. attacking me again and again, your fury against me ever increasing, your troops assailing me, wave after wave.

18. तू ने मुझे गर्भ से क्यों निकाला? नहीं तो मैं वहीं प्राण छोड़ता, और कोई मुझे देखने भी न पाता।

18. Why did you bring me out of the womb? I should have perished then, unseen by any eye,

19. मेरा होना न होने के समान होता, और पेट ही से क़ब्र को पहुंचाया जाता।

19. a being that had never been, to be carried from womb to grave.

20. क्या मेरे दिन थोड़े नहीं? मुझे छोड़ दे, और मेरी ओर से मुंह फेर ले, कि मेरा मन थोड़ा शान्त हो जाए

20. The days of my life are few enough: turn your eyes away, leave me a little joy,

21. इस से पहिले कि मैं वहां जाऊं, जहां से फिर न लौटूंगा, अर्थात् अन्धियारे और धोर अन्धकार के देश में, जहां अन्धकार ही अन्धकार है;

21. before I go to the place of no return, to the land of darkness and shadow dark as death,

22. और मृत्यु के अन्धकार का देश जिस में सब कुछ गड़बड़ है; और जहां प्रकाश भी ऐसा है जैसा अन्धकार।

22. where dimness and disorder hold sway, and light itself is like dead of night.
