1. मेरा प्राण जीवित रहने से उकताता है; मैं स्वतंत्राता पूर्वक कुड़कुड़ाऊंगा; और मैं अपने मन की कड़वाहट के मारे बातें करूंगा।

1. Weary in my soul, I will pour my words with groans upon Him: I will speak being straitened in the bitterness of my soul.

2. मै ईश्वर से कहूंगा, मुझे दोषी न ठहरा; मुझे बता दे, कि तू किस कारण मूझ से मुक़ मा लड़ता है?

2. And I will say to the Lord, Do not teach me to be impious; and wherefore have You thus judged me?

3. क्या तुझे अन्धेर करना, और दुष्टों की युक्ति को सुफल करके अपने हाथों के बनाए हुए को निकम्मा जानना भला लगता है?

3. Is it good before You if I am unrighteous? For You have disowned the work of Your hands, and attended to the counsel of the ungodly.

4. क्या तेरी देश्धारियों की सी बांखें है? और क्या तेरा देखना मनुष्य का सा है?

4. Or do You see as a mortal sees? Or will You look as a man sees?

5. क्या तेरे दिन मनुष्य के दिन के समान हैं, वा तेरे वर्ष पुरूष के समयों के तुल्य हैं,

5. Or is Your life human, or Your years [the years] of a man,

6. कि तू मेरा अधर्म ढूंढ़ता, और मेरा पाप पूछता है?

6. that You have inquired into my iniquity, and searched out my sins?

7. तुझे तो मालूम ही है, कि मैं दुष्ट नहीं हूँ, और तेरे हाथ से कोई छुड़ानेवाला नहीं !

7. For You know that I have not committed iniquity, but who is he that can deliver out of Your hands?

8. तू ने अपने हाथों से मुझे ठीक रचा है और जोड़कर बनाया है; तौभी मुझे नाश किए डालता है।

8. Your hands have formed me and made me; afterwards You changed Your mind, and struck me.

9. स्मरण कर, कि तू ने मुझ को गून्धी हुई मिट्टी की नाई बनाया, क्या तू मुझे फिर धूल में मिलाएगा?

9. Remember that You have made me as clay, and You turn me again into dust.

10. क्या तू ने मुझे दूध की नाई उंडेलकर, और दही के समान जमाकर नहीं बनाया?

10. Have You not poured me out like milk, and curdled me like cheese?

11. फिर तू ने मुझ पर चमड़ा और मांस चढ़ाया और हडि्डयां और नसें गूंथकर मुझे बनाया है।

11. And You clothed me with skin and flesh, and framed me with bones and sinews.

12. तू ने मुझे जीवन दिया, और मुझ पर करूणा की है; और तेरी चौकसी से मेरे प्राण की रक्षा हई है।

12. And You bestowed upon me life and mercy, and Your oversight has preserved my spirit.

13. तौभी तू ने ऐसी बातों को अपने मन में छिपा रखा; मैं तो जान गया, कि तू ने ऐसा ही करने को ठाना था।

13. Having these things in Yourself, I know that You can do all things; for nothing is impossible for You.

14. जो मैं पाप करूं, तो तू उसका लेखा लेगा; और अधर्म करने पर मुझे निदष न ठहराएगा।

14. And if I should sin, You watch me, and You have not cleared me from iniquity.

15. जो मैं दुष्टता करूं तो मुझ पर हाय ! और जो मैं धम बनूं तौभी मैं सिर न उठाऊंगा, क्योंकि मैं अपमान से भरा हुआ हूं और अपने दु:ख पर ध्यान रखता हूँ।

15. Or if I should be ungodly, woe is me: and if I should be righteous, I cannot lift myself up, for I am full of dishonor.

16. और चाहे सिर उठाऊं तौभी तू सिंह की नाई मेरा अहेर करता है, और फिर मेरे विरूद्ध आश्चर्यकर्म करता है।

16. For I am hunted like a lion for slaughter; for again You have changed and are terribly destroying me;

17. तू मेरे साम्हने अपने नये नये साक्षी ले आता है, और मुझ पर अपना क्रोध बढ़ाता है; और मुझ पर सेना पर सेना चढ़ाई करती है।

17. renewing against me my torture: and You have dealt with me in great anger, and You have brought trials upon me.

18. तू ने मुझे गर्भ से क्यों निकाला? नहीं तो मैं वहीं प्राण छोड़ता, और कोई मुझे देखने भी न पाता।

18. Why then did You bring me out of the womb? And why did I not die, and no eye see me,

19. मेरा होना न होने के समान होता, और पेट ही से क़ब्र को पहुंचाया जाता।

19. and I become as if I had not been? For why was I not carried from the womb to the grave?

20. क्या मेरे दिन थोड़े नहीं? मुझे छोड़ दे, और मेरी ओर से मुंह फेर ले, कि मेरा मन थोड़ा शान्त हो जाए

20. Is not the time of my life short? Allow me to rest a little,

21. इस से पहिले कि मैं वहां जाऊं, जहां से फिर न लौटूंगा, अर्थात् अन्धियारे और धोर अन्धकार के देश में, जहां अन्धकार ही अन्धकार है;

21. before I go to where I shall not return, to a land of darkness and gloominess;

22. और मृत्यु के अन्धकार का देश जिस में सब कुछ गड़बड़ है; और जहां प्रकाश भी ऐसा है जैसा अन्धकार।

22. to a land of perpetual darkness, where there is no light, neither [can anyone] see the life of mortals.
