1. मार हुई मक्खियों के कारण गन्धी का तेल सड़ने और बसाने लगता है; और थोड़ी सी मूर्खता बुद्धि और प्रतिष्ठा को घटा देती है।

1. Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: likewise a small act of folly unto him [that is] esteemed for wisdom [and] honour.

2. बुद्धिमान का मन उचित बात की ओर रहता है परन्तु मूर्ख का मन उसके विपरीत रहता है।

2. A wise man's heart [is] at his right hand, but a fool's heart at his left.

3. वरन जब मूर्ख मार्ग पर चलता है, तब उसकी समझ काम नहीं देती, अैर वह सब से कहता है, मैं मूर्ख हूं।।

3. Even when the fool walks by the way, he lacks prudence, and he says unto every one [that] he [is] a fool.

4. यदि हाकिम का क्रोध तुझ पर भड़के, तो अपना स्थान न छोड़ना, क्योंकि धीरज धरने से बड़े बड़े पाप रूकते हैं।।

4. If the spirit of the ruler rises up against thee, do not leave thy place; for meekness pacifies great sins.

5. एक बुराई है जो मैं ने सूर्य के नीचे देखी, वह हाकिम की भूल से होती है:

5. There is [another] evil [which] I have seen under the sun, as an error [which] proceeds from the ruler:

6. अर्थात् मूर्ख बड़ी प्रतिष्ठा के स्थानों में ठहराए जाते हैं, और धनवाल लोग नीचे बैठते हैं।

6. Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich are seated in [a] low place.

7. मैं ने दासों को घोड़ों पर चढ़े, और रईसों को दासों की नाई भूमि पर चलते हुए देखा है।।

7. I saw servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.

8. जो गड़हा खोदे वह उस में गिरेगा और जो बाड़ा तोड़े उसको सर्प डसेगा।

8. He that digs a pit shall fall into it, and whosoever breaks a hedge, a serpent shall bite him.

9. जो पत्थर फोड़े, वह उन से घायल होगा, और जो लकड़ी काटे, उसे उसी से डर होगा।

9. Whosoever moves the stones shall have tribulation along with it, [and] he that cuts the firewood shall be endangered by it.

10. यदि कुल्हाड़ा थोथा हो और मनुष्य उसकी धार को पैनी न करे, तो अधिक बल लगाना पड़ेगा; परन्तु सफल होने के लिये बुद्धि से लाभ होता है।

10. If the iron is blunt, and he does not whet the edge, [then he must] put forth more strength, but the advantages of wisdom excel.

11. यदि मंत्रा से पहिले सर्प डसे, तो मंत्रा पढ़नेवाले को कुछ भी लाभ नहीं।।

11. If the serpent bites without being enchanted, then the babbler is no more.

12. बुद्धिमान के वचनों के कारण अनुग्रह होता है, परन्तु मूर्ख अपने वचनों के द्वारा नाश होते हैं।

12. The words from the mouth of the wise man [are] grace, but the lips of the fool will swallow up himself.

13. उसकी बात का आरम्भ मूर्खता का, और उनका अन्त दुखदाई बावलापन होता है।

13. The beginning of the words of his mouth [is] foolishness, and the end of his talk [is] mischievous madness.

14. मूर्ख बहुत बातें बढ़ाकर बोलता है, तौभी कोई मनुष्य नहीं जानता कि क्या होगा, और कौन बता सकता है कि उसके बाद क्या होनेवाला है?

14. The fool multiplies words [and says], Man cannot tell what shall be, and what shall be after him, who can tell him?

15. मूर्ख को परिश्रम से थकावट ही होती है, यहां तक कि वह नहीं जानता कि नगर को कैसे जाए।।

15. The labour of the foolish wearies all of them because they do not know how to go to the city.

16. हे देश, तुझ पर हाय जब तेरा राजा लड़का है और तेरे हाकिम प्रात:काल भोज करते हैं!

16. Woe to thee, O land, when thy king [is] a child, and thy princes banquet in the morning!

17. हे देश, तू धन्य है जब तेरा राजा कुलीन है; और तेरे हाकिम समय पर भोज करते हैं, और वह भी मतवाले होने को नहीं, वरन्त बल बढ़ाने के लिये!

17. Blessed [art] thou, O land, when thy king [is] the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season for strength, and not for drunkenness!

18. आलस्य के कारण छत की कड़ियां दब जाती हैं, और हाथों की सुस्ती से घर चूता है।

18. By much slothfulness the building decays, and through idleness of the hands [the rain] drips throughout the house.

19. भोज हंसी खुशी के लिये किया जाता है, और दाखमधु से जीवन को आनन्द मिलता है; और रूपयों से सब कुछ प्राप्त होता है।

19. The banquet is made for pleasure, and wine makes merry; but money answers all [things].

20. राजा को मन में भी शाप न देना, न धनवान को अपने शयन की कोठरी में शाप देना; क्योंकि कोई आकाश का पक्षी तेरी वाणी को ले जाएगा, और कोई उड़ानेवाला जन्तु उस बात को प्रगट कर देगा।।

20. Do not curse the king, not even in thy thought; and do not curse the rich even in the secret [place] of thy bedchamber; for the birds of the air shall carry the voice, and those who have wings shall tell the matter.:
