1. मैं ने कहा, मैं अपनी चालचलन में चौकसी करूंगा, ताकि मेरी जीभ से पाप न हो; जब तक दुष्ट मेरे साम्हने है, तब तक मैं लगाम लगाए अपना मुंह बन्द किए रहूंगा।

1. To the Chief Musician; for Jeduthun [founder of an official musical family]. A Psalm of David. I SAID, I will take heed and guard my ways, that I may sin not with my tongue; I will muzzle my mouth as with a bridle while the wicked are before me.

2. मैं मौन धारण कर गूंगा बन गया, और भलाई की ओर से भी चुप्पी साधे रहा; और मेरी पीड़ा बढ़ गई,

2. I was dumb with silence, I held my peace without profit and had no comfort away from good, while my distress was renewed.

3. मेरा हृदय अन्दर ही अन्दर जल रहा था। सोचते सोचते आग भड़क उठी; तब मैं अपनी जीभ से बोल उठा;

3. My heart was hot within me. While I was musing, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue:

4. हे यहोवा ऐसा कर कि मेरा अन्त मुझे मालुम हो जाए, और यह भी कि मेरी आयु के दिन कितने हैं; जिस से मैं जान लूं कि कैसा अनित्य हूं!

4. Lord, make me to know my end and [to appreciate] the measure of my days--what it is; let me know and realize how frail I am [how transient is my stay here].

5. देख, तू ने मेरे आयु बालिश्त भर की रखी है, और मेरी अवस्था तेरी दृष्टि में कुछ है ही नहीं। सचमुच सब मनुष्य कैसे ही स्थिर क्यों न हों तौभी व्यर्थ ठहरे हैं।

5. Behold, You have made my days as [short as] handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing in Your sight. Truly every man at his best is merely a breath! Selah [pause, and think calmly of that]!

6. सचमुच मनुष्य छाया सा चलता फिरता है; सचमुच वे व्यर्थ घबराते हैं; वह धन का संचय तो करता है परन्तु नहीं जानता कि उसे कौन लेगा!

6. Surely every man walks to and fro--like a shadow in a pantomime; surely for futility and emptiness he is in turmoil; each one heaps up riches, not knowing who will gather them. [I Cor. 7:31; James 4:14.]

7. और अब हे प्रभु, मैं किस बात की बाट जोहूं? मेरी आशा तो तेरी ओर लगी है।

7. And now, Lord, what do I wait for and expect? My hope and expectation are in You.

8. मुझे मेरे सब अपराधों के बन्धन से छुड़ा ले। मूढ़ मेरी निन्दा न करने पाए।

8. Deliver me from all my transgressions; make me not the scorn and reproach of the [self-confident] fool!

9. मैं गूंगा बन गया और मुंह न खोला; क्योंकि यह काम तू ही ने किया है।

9. I am dumb, I open not my mouth, for it is You Who has done it.

10. तू ने जो विपत्ति मुझ पर डाली है उसे मुझ से दूर कर दे, क्योंकि मैं तो तरे हाथ की मार से भस्म हुआ जाता हूं।

10. Remove Your stroke away from me; I am consumed by the conflict and the blow of Your hand.

11. जब तू मनुष्य को अधर्म के कारण दपट दपटकर ताड़ना देता है; तब तू उसकी सुन्दरता को पतिंगे की नाई नाश करता है; सचमुच सब मनुष्य वृथाभिमान करते हैं।।

11. When with rebukes You correct and chasten man for sin, You waste his beauty like a moth and what is dear to him consumes away; surely every man is a mere breath. Selah [pause, and think calmly of that]!

12. हे यहोवा, मेरी प्रार्थना सुन, और मेरी दोहाई पर कान लगा; मेरा रोना सुनकर शांत न रह! क्योंकि मैं तेरे संग एक परदेशी यात्री की नाई रहता हूं, और अपने सब पुरखाओं के समान परदेशी हूं।

12. Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry; hold not Your peace at my tears! For I am Your passing guest, a temporary resident, as all my fathers were.

13. आह! इस से पहिले कि मैं यहां से चला जाऊं और न रह जाऊं, मुझे बचा ले जिस से मैं प्रदीप्त जीवन प्राप्त करूं!

13. O look away from me and spare me, that I may recover cheerfulness and encouraging strength and know gladness before I go and am no more!
