1. तब तेमानी एलीपज ने कहा,

1. Then responded Eliphaz the Temanite, and said:

2. यदि कोई तुझ से कुछ कहने लगे, तो क्या तुझे बुरा लगेगा? परन्तु बोले बिना कौन रह सकता है?

2. If one attempt a word unto thee, wilt thou be impatient? But, to restrain speech, who, can endure?

3. सुन, तू ने बहुतों को शिक्षा दी है, और निर्बल लोगों को बलवन्त किया है।

3. Lo! thou hast admonished many, and, slack hands, hast thou been wont to uphold:

4. गिरते हुओं को तू ने अपनी बातों से सम्भाल लिया, और लड़खड़ाते हुए लोगों को तू ने बलवन्त किया।

4. Him that was stumbling, have thy words raised up, and, sinking knees, hast thou strengthened.

5. परन्तु अब विपत्ति तो तुझी पर आ पड़ी, और तू निराश हुआ जाता है; उस ने तुझे छुआ और तू घबरा उठा।

5. But, now, it cometh upon thee, and thou despairest, It smiteth even thee, and thou art dismayed.

6. क्या परमेश्वर का भय ही तेरा आसरा नहीं? और क्या तेरी चालचलन जो खरी है तेरी आशा नहीं?

6. Is not, thy reverence, thy confidence? And is not, thy hope, the very integrity of thy ways?

7. क्या तुझे मालूम है कि कोई निदष भी कभी नाश हुआ है? या कहीं सज्जन भी काट डाले गए?

7. Remember, I pray thee, who, being innocent, hath perished, or when, the upright, have been cut off.

8. मेरे देखने में तो जो पाप को जोतते और दु:ख बोते हैं, वही उसको काटते हैं।

8. So far as I have seen, They who plow for iniquity and sow misery, reap the same:

9. वे तो ईश्वर की श्वास से नाश होते, और उसके क्रोध के झोके से भस्म होते हैं।

9. By the blast of GOD, they perish, And, by the breath of his nostrils, are they consumed:

10. सिंह का गरजना और हिंसक सिंह का दहाड़ना बन्द हो आता है। और जवान सिंहों के दांत तोड़े जाते हैं।

10. Notwithstanding the roaring of the lion, and the noise of the howling lion, yet, the teeth of the fierce lions, are broken:

11. शिकार न पाकर बूढ़ा सिंह मर जाता है, और सिंहनी के वच्चे तितर बितर हो जाते हैं।

11. The strong lion perishing for lack of prey, Even the whelps of the lioness, are scattered.

12. एक बात चुपके से मेरे पास पहुंचाई गई, और उसकी कुछ भनक मेरे कान में पड़ी।

12. But, unto me, something was brought by stealth, and mine ear caught a whispering of the same:

13. रात के स्वप्नों की चिन्ताओं के बीच जब मनुष्य गहरी निद्रा में रहते हैं,

13. When there were thoughts, from visions of the night, When deep sleep falleth upon men,

14. मुझे ऐसी यरथराहट और कंपकंपी लगी कि मेरी सब हडि्डयां तक हिल उठीं।

14. Dread, came upon me, and trembling, The multitude of my bones, it put in dread:

15. तब एक आत्मा मेरे साम्हने से होकर चली; और मेरी देह के रोएं खड़े हो गए।

15. Then, a spirit, over my face, floated along, The hair of my flesh bristled-up:

16. वह चुपचाप ठहर गई और मैं उसकी आकृति को पहिचान न सका। परन्तु मेरी आंखों के साम्हने कोई रूप था; पहिले सन्नाटा छाया रहा, फिर मुझे एक शब्द सुन पड़ा,

16. It stood still, but I could not distinguish its appearance, I looked, but there was no form before mine eyes, A whispering voice, I heard: -

17. क्या नाशमान मनुष्य ईश्वर से अधिक न्यायी होगा? क्या मनुष्य अपने सृजनहार से अधिक पवित्रा हो सकता है?

17. Shall, mortal man, be more just than GOD? Or a man be more pure than, his Maker?

18. देख, वह अपने सेवकों पर भरोसा नहीं रखता, और अपने स्वर्गदूतों को मूर्ख ठहराता है;

18. Lo! in his own servants, he trusteth not, and, his own messengers, he chargeth with error:

19. फिर जो मिट्टी के घरों में रहते हैं, और जिनकी नेव मिट्टी में डाली गई है, और जो पतंगे की नाई पिस जाते हैं, उनकी क्या गणना।

19. How much more the dwellers in houses of clay, which, in the dust, have their foundation, which are crushed sooner than a moth:

20. वे भोर से सांझ तक नाश किए जाते हैं, वे सदा के लिये मिट जाते हैं, और कोई उनका विचार भी नहीं करता।

20. Betwixt morning and evening, are they broken in pieces, With none to save, they utterly perish:

21. क्या उनके डेरे की डोरी उनके अन्दर ही अन्दर नहीं कट जाती? वे बिना बुध्दि के ही मर जाते हैं !

21. Is not their tent-rope within them, torn away? They die, disrobed of wisdom!
