1. और शमूएल का वचन सारे इस्राएल के पास पहुंचा। और इस्राएली पलिश्तियों से युद्ध करने को निकले; और उन्हों ने तो एबेनेजेर के आस- पास छावनी डाली, और पलिश्तियों ने अपेक में छावनी डाली।

1. and Samuel spoke to all Israel. At that time, the Philistines gathered for an attack on Israel. Israel went out to engage them in battle and camped at Ebenezer, while the Philistines camped at Aphek.

2. तब पलिश्तियों ने इस्राएल के विरूद्ध पांति बान्धी, और जब घमासान युद्ध होने लगा तब इस्राएली पलिश्तियों से हार एग, और उन्हों ने कोई चार हजार इस्राएली सेना के पुरूषों को मैदान ही में मार डाला।

2. The Philistines then drew up in battle formation against Israel. After a fierce struggle Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who slew about four thousand men on the battlefield.

3. और जब वे लोग छावनी में लौट आए, तब इस्राएल के वृद्ध लोग कहने लगे, कि यहोवा ने आज हमें पलिश्तियों से क्यों हरवा दिया है? आओ, हम यहोवा की वाचा का सन्दूक शीलो से मांग ले आएं, कि वह हमारे बीच में आकर हमें शत्रुओं के हाथ से बचाए।

3. When the troops retired to the camp, the elders of Israel said, 'Why has the LORD permitted us to be defeated today by the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the LORD from Shiloh that it may go into battle among us and save us from the grasp of our enemies.'

4. तब उन लोगों ने शीलों में भेजकर वहां से करूबों के ऊपर विराजनेवाले सेनाओं के यहोवा की वाचा का सन्दूक मंगा लिया; और परमेश्वर की वाचा के सन्दूक के साथ एली के दोनों पुत्रा, होप्नी और पिनहास भी वहां थे।

4. So the people sent to Shiloh and brought from there the ark of the LORD of hosts, who is enthroned upon the cherubim. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were with the ark of God.

5. जब यहोवा की वाचा का सन्दूक छावनी में पहुंचा, तब सारे इस्राएली इतने बल से ललकार उठे, कि भूमि गूंज उठी।

5. When the ark of the LORD arrived in the camp, all Israel shouted so loudly that the earth resounded.

6. इस ललकार का शब्द सुनकर पलिश्तियों ने पूछा, इब्रियों की छावनी में ऐसी बड़ी ललकार का क्या कारण है? तब उन्हों ने जान लिया, कि यहोवा का सन्दूक छावनी में आया है।

6. The Philistines, hearing the noise of shouting, asked, 'What can this loud shouting in the camp of the Hebrews mean?' On learning that the ark of the LORD had come into the camp,

7. तब पलिश्ती डरकर कहने लगे, उस छावनी में परमेश्वर आ गया है। फिर उन्हों ने कहा, हाय! हम पर ऐसी बात पहिले नहीं हुई थी।

7. the Philistines were frightened. They said, 'Gods have come to their camp.' They said also, 'Woe to us! This has never happened before.

8. हाय! ऐसे महाप्रतापी देवताओं के हाथ से हम को कौन बचाएगा? ये तो वे ही देवता हैं जिन्हों ने मिस्त्रियों पर जंगल में सब प्रकार की विपत्तियां डाली थीं।

8. Woe to us! Who can deliver us from the power of these mighty gods? These are the gods that struck the Egyptians with various plagues and with pestilence.

9. हे पलिश्तियों, तुम हियाव बान्धो, और पुरूषार्थ जगाओ, कहीं ऐसा न हो कि जैसे इब्री तुम्हारे अधीन हो गए वैसे तुम भी उनके अधीन हो जाओ; पुरूषार्थ करके संग्राम करो।

9. Take courage and be manly, Philistines; otherwise you will become slaves to the Hebrews, as they were your slaves. So fight manfully!'

10. तब पलिश्ती लड़ाई के मैदान में टूट पड़े, और इस्राएली हारकर अपने अपने डेरे को भागने लगे; और ऐसा अत्यन्त संहार हुआ, कि तीस हजार इस्राएली पैदल खेत आए।

10. The Philistines fought and Israel was defeated; every man fled to his own tent. It was a disastrous defeat, in which Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers.

11. और परमेश्वर का सन्दूक छीन लिया गया; और एली के दोनो पुत्रा, होप्नी और पीनहास, भी मारे गए।

11. The ark of God was captured, and Eli's two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were among the dead.

12. तब एक बिन्यामीनी मनुष्य ने सेना में से दौड़कर उसी दिन अपने वस्त्रा फाड़े और सिर पर मिट्टी डाले हुए शीलो में पहुंचा।

12. A Benjaminite fled from the battlefield and reached Shiloh that same day, with his clothes torn and his head covered with dirt.

13. वह जब पहुंचा उस समय एली, जिसका मन परमेश्वर के सन्दूक की चिन्ता से थरथरा रहा था, वह मार्ग के किनारे कुर्सी पर बैठा बाट जोह रहा था। और ज्योंही उस मनुष्य ने नगर में पहुंचकर वह समाचार दिया त्योंही सारा नगर चिल्ला उठा।

13. When he arrived, Eli was sitting in his chair beside the gate, watching the road, for he was troubled at heart about the ark of God. The man, however, went into the city to divulge his news, which put the whole city in an uproar.

14. चिल्लाने का शब्द सुनकर एली ने पूछा, ऐसे हुल्लड़ और हाहाकार मचने का क्या कारण है? और उस मनुष्य ने झट जाकर एली को पूरा हाल सुनाया।

14. Hearing the outcry of the men standing near him, Eli inquired, 'What does this commotion mean?'

15. एल तो अट्ठानवे वर्ष का था, और उसकी आंखें धुन्धली पड़ गई थीं, और उसे कुछ सूझता न था।

15. (Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes would not focus, so that he could not see.)

16. उस मनुष्य ने एली से कहा, मैं वही हूं जो सेना में से आया हूं; और मैं सेना से आज ही भाग आया। वह बोला, हे मेरे बेटे, क्या समाचार है?

16. The man quickly came up to Eli and said, 'It is I who have come from the battlefield; I fled from there today.' He asked, 'What happened, my son?'

17. उस समाचार देनेवाले ने उत्तर दिया, कि इस्राएली पलिश्तियों के साम्हने से भाग गए हैं, और लोगों का बड़ा भयानक संहार भी हुआ है, और तेरे दोनों पुत्रा होप्नी और पीनहास भी मारे गए, और परमेश्वर का सन्दूक भी छीन लिया गया है।

17. And the messenger answered: 'Israel fled from the Philistines; in fact, the troops suffered heavy losses. Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are among the dead, and the ark of God has been captured.'

18. ज्योंही उस ने परमेश्वर के सन्दूक का नाम लिया त्योंही एली फाटक के पास कुर्सी पर से पछाड़ खाकर गिर पड़ा; और बूढ़े और भारी होने के कारण उसकी गर्दन टूट गई, और वह मर गया। उस ने तो इस्राएलियों का न्याय चालीस वर्ष तक किया था।

18. At this mention of the ark of God, Eli fell backward from his chair into the gateway; since he was an old man and heavy, he died of a broken neck. He had judged Israel for forty years.

19. उसकी बहू पीनहास की स्त्री गर्भवती थी, और उसका समय समीप था। और जब उस ने परमेश्वर के सन्दूक के छीन लिए जाने, और अपने ससुर और पति के मरने का समाचार सुना, तब उसको जच्चा का दर्द उठा, और वह दुहर गई, और उसके एक पुत्रा उत्पन्न हुआ।

19. His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was with child and at the point of giving birth. When she heard the news concerning the capture of the ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she was seized with the pangs of labor, and gave birth.

20. उसके मरते मरते उन स्त्रियों ने जो उसके आस पास खड़ी थीं उस से कहा, मत डर, क्योंकि तेरे प्रत्रा उत्पन्न हुआ है। परन्तु उस ने कुद उत्तर न दिया, और न कुछ ध्यान दिया।

20. She was about to die when the women standing around her said to her, 'Never fear! You have given birth to a son.' Yet she neither answered nor paid any attention.

21. और परमेश्वर के सन्दूक के छीन लिए जाने और अपने ससुर और पति के कारण उस ने यह कहकर उस बालक का नाम ईकाबोद रखा, कि इस्राएल में से महिमा उठ गई!

21. (She named the child Ichabod, saying, 'Gone is the glory from Israel,' with reference to the capture of the ark of God and to her father-in-law and her husband.)

22. फिर उस ने कहा, इस्राएल में से महिमा उठ गई है, क्योंकि परमेश्वर का सन्दूक छीन लिया गया है।।
