1. परन्तु अब जिनकी अवस्था मुझ से कम है, वे मेरी हंसी करते हैं, वे जिनके पिताओं को मैं अपनी भेड़ बकरियों के कुत्तों के काम के योग्य भी न जानता था।

1. But men younger than I am make fun of me now! Their fathers have always been so worthless that I wouldn't let them help my dogs guard sheep.

2. उनके भुजबल से मुझे क्या लाभ हो सकता था? उनका पौरूष तो जाता रहा।

2. They were a bunch of worn-out men, too weak to do any work for me.

3. वे दरिद्रता और काल के मारे दुबले पड़े हुए हैं, वे अन्धेरे और सुनसान स्थानों में सुखी धूल फांकते हैं।

3. They were so poor and hungry that they would gnaw dry roots--- at night, in wild, desolate places.

4. वे झाड़ी के आसपास का लोनिया साग तोड़ लेते, और झाऊ की जड़ें खाते हैं।

4. They pulled up the plants of the desert and ate them, even the tasteless roots of the broom tree!

5. वे मनुष्यों के बीच में से निकाले जाते हैं, उनके पीछे ऐसी पुकार होती है, जैसी जोर के पीछे।

5. Everyone drove them away with shouts, as if they were shouting at thieves.

6. They had to live in caves, in holes dug in the sides of cliffs.

7. वे झाड़ियों के बीच रेंकते, और बिच्छू पौधों के नीचे इकट्ठे पड़े रहते हैं।

7. Out in the wilds they howled like animals and huddled together under the bushes.

8. वे मूढ़ों और नीच लोगों के वंश हैं जो मार मार के इस देश से निकाले गए थे।

8. A worthless bunch of nameless nobodies! They were driven out of the land.

9. ऐसे ही लोग अब मुझ पर लगते गीत गाते, और मुझ पर ताना मारते हैं।

9. Now they come and laugh at me; I am nothing but a joke to them.

10. वे मुझ से घिन खाकर दूर रहते, वा मेरे मुंह पर थूकने से भी नहीं डरते।

10. They treat me with disgust; they think they are too good for me, and even come and spit in my face.

11. ईश्वर ने जो मेरी रस्सी खोलकर मुझे देख दिया है, इसलिये वे मेरे साम्हने मुंह में लगाम नहीं रखते।

11. Because God has made me weak and helpless, they turn against me with all their fury.

12. मेरी दहिनी अलंग पर बजारू लोग उठ खड़े होते हैं, वे मेरे पांव सरका देते हैं, और मेरे नाश के लिये अपने उपाय बान्धते हैं।

12. This mob attacks me head-on; they send me running; they prepare their final assault.

13. जिनके कोई सहायक नहीं, वे भी मेरे रास्तों को बिगाड़ते, और मेरी विपत्ति को बढ़ाते हैं।

13. They cut off my escape and try to destroy me; and there is no one to stop them.

14. मानो बड़े नाके से घुसकर वे आ पड़ते हैं, और उजाड़ के बीच में होकर मुझ पर धावा करते हैं।

14. They pour through the holes in my defenses and come crashing down on top of me;

15. मुुझ में घबराहट छा गई है, और मेरा रईसपन मानो वायु से उड़ाया गया है, और मेरा कुशल बादल की नाई जाता रहा।

15. I am overcome with terror; my dignity is gone like a puff of wind, and my prosperity like a cloud.

16. और अब मैं शोकसागर में डूबा जाता हूँ; दु:ख के दिनों ने मुझे जकड़ लिया है।

16. Now I am about to die; there is no relief for my suffering.

17. रात को मेरी हडि्डयां मेरे अन्दर छिद जाती हैं और मेरी नसों में चैन नहीं पड़ती

17. At night my bones all ache; the pain that gnaws me never stops.

18. मेरी बीमारी की बहुतायत से मेरे वस्त्रा का रूप बदल गया है; वह मेरे कुत्तें के गले की नाई मुझ से लिपटी हुई है।

18. God seizes me by my collar and twists my clothes out of shape.

19. उस ने मुझ को कीचड़ में फेंक दिया है, और मैं मिट्टी और राख के तुल्य हो गया हूँ।

19. He throws me down in the mud; I am no better than dirt.

20. मैं तेरी दोहाई देता हूँ, परन्तु तू नहीं सुनता; मैं खड़ा होता हूँ परन्तु तू मेरी ओर घूरने लगता है।

20. I call to you, O God, but you never answer; and when I pray, you pay no attention.

21. You are treating me cruelly; you persecute me with all your power.

22. तू बदलकर मुझ पर कठोर हो गया है; और अपने बली हाथ से मुझे सताता हे।

22. You let the wind blow me away; you toss me about in a raging storm.

23. तू मुझे वायु पर सवार करके उड़ाता है, और आंधी के पानी में मुझे गला देता है।

23. I know you are taking me off to my death, to the fate in store for everyone.

24. हां, मुझे निश्चय है, कि तू मुझे मृत्यु के वश में कर देगा, और उस घर में पहुंचाएगा, जो सब जीवित प्राणियों के लिये ठहराया गया है।

24. Why do you attack a ruined man, one who can do nothing but beg for pity?

25. तौभी क्या कोई गिरते समय हाथ न बढ़ाएगा? और क्या कोई विपत्ति के समय दोहाई न देगा?

25. Didn't I weep with people in trouble and feel sorry for those in need?

26. क्या मैं उसके लिये रोता नहीं था, जिसके दुर्दिन आते थे? और क्या दरिद्र जन के कारण मैं प्राण में दुखित न होता था?

26. I hoped for happiness and light, but trouble and darkness came instead.

27. जब मैं कुशल का मार्ग जोहता था, तब विपत्ति आ पड़ी; और जब मैं उजियाले का आसरा लगाए था, तब अन्धकार छा गया।

27. I am torn apart by worry and pain; I have had day after day of suffering.

28. मेरी अन्तड़ियां निरन्तर उबलती रहती हैं और आराम नहीं पातीं; मेरे दु:ख के दिन आ गए हैं।

28. I go about in gloom, without any sunshine; I stand up in public and plead for help.

29. मैं शोक का पहिरावा पहिने हुए मानो बिना सूर्य की गम के काला हो गया हूँ। और सभा में खड़ा होकर सहायता के लिये दोहाई देता हूँ।

29. My voice is as sad and lonely as the cries of a jackal or an ostrich.

30. मैं गीदड़ों का भाई और शुतुर्मुग का संगी हो गया हूँ।

30. My skin has turned dark; I am burning with fever.

31. मेरा चमड़ा काला होकर मुझ पर से गिरता जाता है, और तप के मारे मेरी हडि्डयां जल गई हैं।

31. Where once I heard joyful music, now I hear only mourning and weeping.
