1. अरयूब ने और भी अपनी गूढ़ बात उठाई और कहा,

1. And Job addeth to lift up his simile, and saith: --

2. भला होता, कि मेरी दशा बीते हुए महीनों की सी होती, जिन दिनों में ईश्वर मेरी रक्षा करता था,

2. Who doth make me as [in] months past, As [in] the days of God's preserving me?

3. जब उसके दीपक का प्रकाश मेरे सिर पर रहता था, और उस से उजियाला पाकर मैं अन्धेरे में चलता था।

3. In His causing His lamp to shine on my head, By His light I walk [through] darkness.

4. वे तो मेरी जवानी के दिन थे, जब ईश्वर की मित्राता मेरे डेरे पर प्रगट होती थी।

4. As I have been in days of my maturity, And the counsel of God upon my tent.

5. उस समय तक तो सर्वशक्तिमान मेरे संग रहता था, और मेरे लड़केबाले मेरे चारों ओर रहते थे।

5. When yet the Mighty One [is] with me. Round about me -- my young ones,

6. तब मैं अपने पगों को मलाई से धोता था और मेरे पास की चट्टानों से तेल की धाराएं बहा करती थीं।

6. When washing my goings with butter, And the firm rock [is] with me rivulets of oil.

7. जब जब मैं नगर के फाटक की ओर चलकर खुले स्थान में अपने बैठने का स्थान तैयार करता था,

7. When I go out to the gate by the city, In a broad place I prepare my seat.

8. तब तब जवान मुझे देखकर छिप जाते, और पुरनिये उठकर खड़े हो जाते थे।

8. Seen me have youths, and they, been hidden, And the aged have risen -- they stood up.

9. हाकिम लोग भी बोलने से रूक जाते, और हाथ से मुंह मूंदे रहते थे।

9. Princes have kept in words, And a hand they place on their mouth.

10. प्रधान लोग चुप रहते थे और उनकी जीभ तालू से सट जाती थी।

10. The voice of leaders hath been hidden, And their tongue to the palate hath cleaved.

11. क्योंकि जब कोई मेरा समाचार सुनता, तब वह मुझे धन्य कहता था, और जब कोई मुझे देखता, तब मेरे विषय साक्षी देता था;

11. For the ear heard, and declareth me happy, And the eye hath seen, and testifieth [to] me.

12. क्योंकि मैं दोहाई देनेवाले दीन जन को, और असहाय अनाथ को भी छुड़ाता था।

12. For I deliver the afflicted who is crying, And the fatherless who hath no helper.

13. जो नाश होने पर था मुझे आशीर्वाद देता था, और मेरे कारण विधवा आनन्द के मारे गाती थी।

13. The blessing of the perishing cometh on me, And the heart of the widow I cause to sing.

14. मैं धर्म को पहिने रहा, और वह मुझे ढांके रहा; मेरा न्याय का काम मेरे लिये बागे और सुन्दर पगड़ी का काम देता था।

14. Righteousness I have put on, and it clotheth me, As a robe and a diadem my justice.

15. मैं अन्धों के लिये आंखें, और लंगड़ों के लिये पांव ठहरता था।

15. Eyes I have been to the blind, And feet to the lame [am] I.

16. दरिद्र लोगों का मैं पिता ठहरता था, और जो मेरी पहिचान का न था उसके मुक़ मे का हाल मैं पूछताछ करके जान लेता था।

16. A father I [am] to the needy, And the cause I have not known I search out.

17. मैं कुटिल मनुष्यों की डाढ़ें तोड़ डालता, और उनका शिकार उनके मुंह से छीनकर बचा लेता था।

17. And I break the jaw-teeth of the perverse, And from his teeth I cast away prey.

18. तब मैं सोचता था, कि मेरे दिन बालू के किनकों के समान अनगिनत होंगे, और अपने ही बसेरे में मेरा प्राण छूटेगा।

18. And I say, 'With my nest I expire, And as the sand I multiply days.'

19. मेरी जड़ जल की ओर फैली, और मेरी डाली पर ओस रात भर पड़ी,

19. My root is open unto the waters, And dew doth lodge on my branch.

20. मेरी महिमा ज्यों की त्यों बनी रहेगी, और मेरा धनुष मेरे हाथ में सदा नया होता जाएगा।

20. My honour [is] fresh with me, And my bow in my hand is renewed.

21. लोग मेरी ही ओर कान लगाकर ठहरे रहते थे और मेरी सम्मति सुनकर चुप रहते थे।

21. To me they have hearkened, Yea, they wait, and are silent for my counsel.

22. जब मैं बोल चुकता था, तब वे और कुछ न बोलते थे, मेरी बातें उन पर मेंह की ताई बरसा करती थीं।

22. After my word they change not, And on them doth my speech drop,

23. जैसे लोग बरसात की वैसे ही मेरी भी बाट देखते थे; और जैसे बरसात के अन्त की वर्षा के लिये वैसे ही वे मुंह पसारे रहते थे।

23. And they wait as [for] rain for me, And their mouth they have opened wide [As] for the latter rain.

24. जब उनको कुछ आशा न रहती थी तब मैं हंसकर उनको प्रसन्न करता था; और कोई मेरे मुंह को बिगाड़ न सकता था।

24. I laugh unto them -- they give no credence, And the light of my face cause not to fall.

25. मैं उनका मार्ग चुन लेता, और उन में मुख्य ठहरकर बैठा करता था, और जैसा सेना में राजा वा विलाप करनेवालों के बीच शान्तिदाता, वैसा ही मैं रहता था।

25. I choose their way, and sit head, And I dwell as a king in a troop, When mourners he doth comfort.
