1. मनुष्य जो स्त्री से उत्मन्न होता है, वह थेड़े दिनों का और दुख से भरा रहता है।

1. Man, that is born of a woman, Is of few days, and full of trouble.

2. वह फूल की नाई खिलता, फिर तोड़ा जाता हे; वह छाया की रीति पर ढल जाता, और कहीं ठहरता नहीं।

2. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: He fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

3. फिर क्या तू ऐसे पर दृष्टि लगाता है? क्या तू मुझे अपने साथ कचहरी में घसीटता है?

3. And dost thou open thine eyes upon such a one, And bringest me into judgment with thee?

4. अशुठ्ठ वस्तु से शुठ्ठ वस्तु को कौन निकाल सकता है? कोई नहीं।

4. Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

5. मनुष्य के दिन नियुक्त किए गए हैं, और उसके महीनों की गिनती तेरे पास लिखी है, और तू ने उसके लिये ऐसा सिवाना बान्धा है जिसे वह पार नहीं कर सकता,

5. Seeing his days are determined, The number of his months is with thee, And thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

6. इस कारण उस से अपना मुंह फेर ले, कि वह आराम करे, जब तक कि वह मजदूर की नाई अपना दिन पूरा न कर ले।

6. Look away from him, that he may rest, Till he shall accomplish, as a hireling, his day.

7. वुक्ष की तो आशा रहती है, कि चाहे वह काट डाला भी जाए, तौभी फिर पनपेगा और उस से नर्म नर्म डालियां निकलती ही रहेंगी।

7. For there is hope of a tree, If it be cut down, that it will sprout again, And that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

8. चाहे उसकी जड़ भूमि में पुरानी भी हो जाए, और उसका ठूंठ मिट्टी में सूख भी जाए,

8. Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, And the stock thereof die in the ground;

9. तौभी वर्षा की गन्ध पाकर वह फिर पनपेगा, और पौधे की नाई उस से शाखाएं फूटेंगी।

9. Yet through the scent of water it will bud, And put forth boughs like a plant.

10. परन्तु पुरूष मर जाता, और पड़ा रहता है; जब उसका प्राण छूट गया, तब वह कहां रहा?

10. But man dieth, and is laid low: Yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

11. जैसे नील नदी का जल घट जाता है, और जैसे महानद का जल सूखते सूखते सूख जाता है,

11. [As] the waters fail from the sea, And the river wasteth and drieth up;

12. वैसे ही मनुष्य लेट जाता और फिर नहीं उठता; जब तक आकाश बना रहेगा तब तक वह न जागेगा, और न उसकी नींद टूटेगी।

12. So man lieth down and riseth not: Till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, Nor be roused out of their sleep.

13. भला होता कि तू मुझे अधोलोक में छिपा लेता, और जब तक तेरा कोप ठंढा न हो जाए तब तक मुझे छिपाए रखता, और मेरे लिये समय नियुक्त करके फिर मेरी सुधि लेता।

13. Oh that thou wouldest hide me in Sheol, That thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, That thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

14. यदि मनुष्य मर जाए तो क्या वह फिर जीवित होगा? जब तक मेरा छूटकारा न होता तब तक मैं अपनी कठिन सेवा के सारे दिन आशा लगाए रहता।

14. If a man die, shall he live [again]? All the days of my warfare would I wait, Till my release should come.

15. तू मुझे बुलाता, और मैं बोलता; तुझे अपने हाथ के बनाए हुए काम की अभिलाषा होती।

15. Thou wouldest call, and I would answer thee: Thou wouldest have a desire to the work of thy hands.

16. परन्तु अब तू मेरे पग पग को गिनता है, क्या तू मेरे पाप की ताक में लगा नहीं रहता?

16. But now thou numberest my steps: Dost thou not watch over my sin?

17. मेरे अपराध छाप लगी हुई थैली में हैं, और तू ने मेरे अधर्म को सी रखा है।

17. My transgression is sealed up in a bag, And thou fastenest up mine iniquity.

18. और निश्चय पहाड़ भी गिरते गिरते नाश हो जाता है, और चट्टान अपने स्थान से हट जाती है;

18. But the mountain falling cometh to nought; And the rock is removed out of its place;

19. और पत्थर जल से घिस जाते हैं, और भूमि की धूलि उसकी बाढ़ से बहाई जाती है; उसी प्रकार तू मनुष्य की आशा को मिटा देता है।

19. The waters wear the stones; The overflowings thereof wash away the dust of the earth: So thou destroyest the hope of man.

20. तू सदा उस पर प्रबल होता, और वह जाता रहता है; तू उसका चिहरा बिगाड़कर उसे निकाल देता है।

20. Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth; Thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

21. उसके पुत्रों की बड़ाई होती है, और यह उसे नहीं सूझता; और उनकी घटी होती है, परन्तु वह उनका हाल नहीं जानता।

21. His sons come to honor, and he knoweth it not; And they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

22. केवल अपने ही कारण उसकी देी को दु:ख होता है; और अपने ही कारण उसका प्राण अन्दर ही अन्दर शोकित रहता है।

22. But his flesh upon him hath pain, And his soul within him mourneth.
