1. मनुष्य जो स्त्री से उत्मन्न होता है, वह थेड़े दिनों का और दुख से भरा रहता है।

1. All of us born to women live only a few days and have lots of trouble.

2. वह फूल की नाई खिलता, फिर तोड़ा जाता हे; वह छाया की रीति पर ढल जाता, और कहीं ठहरता नहीं।

2. We grow up like flowers and then dry up and die. We are like a passing shadow that does not last.

3. फिर क्या तू ऐसे पर दृष्टि लगाता है? क्या तू मुझे अपने साथ कचहरी में घसीटता है?

3. Lord, do you need to watch me like this? Must you bring me before you to be judged?

4. अशुठ्ठ वस्तु से शुठ्ठ वस्तु को कौन निकाल सकता है? कोई नहीं।

4. No one can bring something clean from something dirty.

5. मनुष्य के दिन नियुक्त किए गए हैं, और उसके महीनों की गिनती तेरे पास लिखी है, और तू ने उसके लिये ऐसा सिवाना बान्धा है जिसे वह पार नहीं कर सकता,

5. Our time is limited. You have given us only so many months to live and have set limits we cannot go beyond.

6. So look away from us and leave us alone until we put in our time like a laborer.

7. वुक्ष की तो आशा रहती है, कि चाहे वह काट डाला भी जाए, तौभी फिर पनपेगा और उस से नर्म नर्म डालियां निकलती ही रहेंगी।

7. 'If a tree is cut down, there is hope that it will grow again and will send out new branches.

8. चाहे उसकी जड़ भूमि में पुरानी भी हो जाए, और उसका ठूंठ मिट्टी में सूख भी जाए,

8. Even if its roots grow old in the ground, and its stump dies in the dirt,

9. तौभी वर्षा की गन्ध पाकर वह फिर पनपेगा, और पौधे की नाई उस से शाखाएं फूटेंगी।

9. at the smell of water it will bud and put out new shoots like a plant.

10. परन्तु पुरूष मर जाता, और पड़ा रहता है; जब उसका प्राण छूट गया, तब वह कहां रहा?

10. But we die, and our bodies are laid in the ground; we take our last breath and are gone.

11. जैसे नील नदी का जल घट जाता है, और जैसे महानद का जल सूखते सूखते सूख जाता है,

11. Water disappears from a lake, and a river loses its water and dries up.

12. वैसे ही मनुष्य लेट जाता और फिर नहीं उठता; जब तक आकाश बना रहेगा तब तक वह न जागेगा, और न उसकी नींद टूटेगी।

12. In the same way, we lie down and do not rise again; we will not get up or be awakened until the heavens disappear.

13. भला होता कि तू मुझे अधोलोक में छिपा लेता, और जब तक तेरा कोप ठंढा न हो जाए तब तक मुझे छिपाए रखता, और मेरे लिये समय नियुक्त करके फिर मेरी सुधि लेता।

13. 'I wish you would hide me in the grave; hide me until your anger is gone. I wish you would set a time and then remember me!

14. यदि मनुष्य मर जाए तो क्या वह फिर जीवित होगा? जब तक मेरा छूटकारा न होता तब तक मैं अपनी कठिन सेवा के सारे दिन आशा लगाए रहता।

14. If a person dies, will he live again? All my days are a struggle; I will wait until my change comes.

15. तू मुझे बुलाता, और मैं बोलता; तुझे अपने हाथ के बनाए हुए काम की अभिलाषा होती।

15. You will call, and I will answer you; you will desire the creature your hands have made.

16. परन्तु अब तू मेरे पग पग को गिनता है, क्या तू मेरे पाप की ताक में लगा नहीं रहता?

16. Then you will count my steps, but you will not keep track of my sin.

17. मेरे अपराध छाप लगी हुई थैली में हैं, और तू ने मेरे अधर्म को सी रखा है।

17. My wrongs will be closed up in a bag, and you will cover up my sin.

18. और निश्चय पहाड़ भी गिरते गिरते नाश हो जाता है, और चट्टान अपने स्थान से हट जाती है;

18. A mountain washes away and crumbles; and a rock can be moved from its place.

19. और पत्थर जल से घिस जाते हैं, और भूमि की धूलि उसकी बाढ़ से बहाई जाती है; उसी प्रकार तू मनुष्य की आशा को मिटा देता है।

19. Water washes over stones and wears them down, and rushing waters wash away the dirt. In the same way, you destroy my hope.

20. तू सदा उस पर प्रबल होता, और वह जाता रहता है; तू उसका चिहरा बिगाड़कर उसे निकाल देता है।

20. You defeat a person forever, and he is gone; you change his appearance and send him away.

21. उसके पुत्रों की बड़ाई होती है, और यह उसे नहीं सूझता; और उनकी घटी होती है, परन्तु वह उनका हाल नहीं जानता।

21. His sons are honored, but he does not know it; his sons are disgraced, but he does not see it.

22. केवल अपने ही कारण उसकी देी को दु:ख होता है; और अपने ही कारण उसका प्राण अन्दर ही अन्दर शोकित रहता है।

22. He only feels the pain of his body and feels sorry for himself.'
