1. अरयूब ने और भी अपनी गूढ़ बात उठाई और कहा,

1. And Job again took up the word and said,

2. भला होता, कि मेरी दशा बीते हुए महीनों की सी होती, जिन दिनों में ईश्वर मेरी रक्षा करता था,

2. If only I might again be as I was in the months which are past, in the days when God was watching over me!

3. जब उसके दीपक का प्रकाश मेरे सिर पर रहता था, और उस से उजियाला पाकर मैं अन्धेरे में चलता था।

3. When his light was shining over my head, and when I went through the dark by his light.

4. वे तो मेरी जवानी के दिन थे, जब ईश्वर की मित्राता मेरे डेरे पर प्रगट होती थी।

4. As I was in my flowering years, when my tent was covered by the hand of God;

5. उस समय तक तो सर्वशक्तिमान मेरे संग रहता था, और मेरे लड़केबाले मेरे चारों ओर रहते थे।

5. While the Ruler of all was still with me, and my children were round me;

6. तब मैं अपने पगों को मलाई से धोता था और मेरे पास की चट्टानों से तेल की धाराएं बहा करती थीं।

6. When my steps were washed with milk, and rivers of oil were flowing out of the rock for me.

7. जब जब मैं नगर के फाटक की ओर चलकर खुले स्थान में अपने बैठने का स्थान तैयार करता था,

7. When I went out of my door to go up to the town, and took my seat in the public place,

8. तब तब जवान मुझे देखकर छिप जाते, और पुरनिये उठकर खड़े हो जाते थे।

8. The young men saw me, and went away, and the old men got up from their seats;

9. हाकिम लोग भी बोलने से रूक जाते, और हाथ से मुंह मूंदे रहते थे।

9. The rulers kept quiet, and put their hands on their mouths;

10. प्रधान लोग चुप रहते थे और उनकी जीभ तालू से सट जाती थी।

10. The chiefs kept back their words, and their tongues were joined to the roofs of their mouths.

11. क्योंकि जब कोई मेरा समाचार सुनता, तब वह मुझे धन्य कहता था, और जब कोई मुझे देखता, तब मेरे विषय साक्षी देता था;

11. For when it came to their ears, men said that I was truly happy; and when their eyes saw, they gave witness to me;

12. क्योंकि मैं दोहाई देनेवाले दीन जन को, और असहाय अनाथ को भी छुड़ाता था।

12. For I was a saviour to the poor when he was crying for help, to the child with no father, and to him who had no supporter.

13. जो नाश होने पर था मुझे आशीर्वाद देता था, और मेरे कारण विधवा आनन्द के मारे गाती थी।

13. The blessing of him who was near to destruction came on me, and I put a song of joy into the widow's heart.

14. मैं धर्म को पहिने रहा, और वह मुझे ढांके रहा; मेरा न्याय का काम मेरे लिये बागे और सुन्दर पगड़ी का काम देता था।

14. I put on righteousness as my clothing, and was full of it; right decisions were to me a robe and a head-dress.

15. मैं अन्धों के लिये आंखें, और लंगड़ों के लिये पांव ठहरता था।

15. I was eyes to the blind, and feet to him who had no power of walking.

16. दरिद्र लोगों का मैं पिता ठहरता था, और जो मेरी पहिचान का न था उसके मुक़ मे का हाल मैं पूछताछ करके जान लेता था।

16. I was a father to the poor, searching out the cause of him who was strange to me.

17. मैं कुटिल मनुष्यों की डाढ़ें तोड़ डालता, और उनका शिकार उनके मुंह से छीनकर बचा लेता था।

17. By me the great teeth of the evil-doer were broken, and I made him give up what he had violently taken away.

18. तब मैं सोचता था, कि मेरे दिन बालू के किनकों के समान अनगिनत होंगे, और अपने ही बसेरे में मेरा प्राण छूटेगा।

18. Then I said, I will come to my end with my children round me, my days will be as the sand in number;

19. मेरी जड़ जल की ओर फैली, और मेरी डाली पर ओस रात भर पड़ी,

19. My root will be open to the waters, and the night mist will be on my branches,

20. मेरी महिमा ज्यों की त्यों बनी रहेगी, और मेरा धनुष मेरे हाथ में सदा नया होता जाएगा।

20. My glory will be ever new, and my bow will be readily bent in my hand.

21. लोग मेरी ही ओर कान लगाकर ठहरे रहते थे और मेरी सम्मति सुनकर चुप रहते थे।

21. Men gave ear to me, waiting and keeping quiet for my suggestions.

22. जब मैं बोल चुकता था, तब वे और कुछ न बोलते थे, मेरी बातें उन पर मेंह की ताई बरसा करती थीं।

22. After I had said what was in my mind, they were quiet and let my words go deep into their hearts;

23. जैसे लोग बरसात की वैसे ही मेरी भी बाट देखते थे; और जैसे बरसात के अन्त की वर्षा के लिये वैसे ही वे मुंह पसारे रहते थे।

23. They were waiting for me as for the rain, opening their mouths wide as for the spring rains.

24. जब उनको कुछ आशा न रहती थी तब मैं हंसकर उनको प्रसन्न करता था; और कोई मेरे मुंह को बिगाड़ न सकता था।

24. I was laughing at them when they had no hope, and the light of my face was never clouded by their fear.

25. मैं उनका मार्ग चुन लेता, और उन में मुख्य ठहरकर बैठा करता था, और जैसा सेना में राजा वा विलाप करनेवालों के बीच शान्तिदाता, वैसा ही मैं रहता था।

25. I took my place as a chief, guiding them on their way, and I was as a king among his army. ...
