1. फिर लाबान के पुत्रों की ये बातें याकूब के सुनने में आई, कि याकूब ने हमारे पिता का सब कुछ छीन लिया है, और हमारे पिता के धन के कारण उसकी यह प्रतिष्ठा है।

1. As Jacob was on his way back home, some of God's angels came and met him.

2. और याकूब ने लाबान के मुखड़े पर दृष्टि की और ताड़ लिया, कि वह उसके प्रति पहले के समान नहीं है।

2. When Jacob saw them, he said, 'This is God's camp.' So he named the place Mahanaim.

3. तब यहोवा ने याकूब से कहा, अपने पितरों के देश और अपनी जन्मभूमि को लौट जा, और मैं तेरे संग रहूंगा।

3. Jacob sent messengers on ahead to Esau, who lived in the land of Seir, also known as Edom.

4. तब याकूब ने राहेल और लिआ: को, मैदान में अपनी भेड़- बकरियों के पास, बुलवाकर कहा,

4. Jacob told them to say to Esau, 'Master, I am your servant! I have lived with Laban all this time,

5. तुम्हारे पिता के मुखडे से मुझे समझ पड़ता है, कि वह तो मुझे पहिले की नाई अब नहीं देखता; पर मेरे पिता का परमेश्वर मेरे संग है।

5. and now I own cattle, donkeys, and sheep, as well as many slaves. Master, I am sending these messengers in the hope that you will be kind to me.'

6. और तुम भी जानती हो, कि मैं ने तुम्हारे पिता की सेवा शक्ति भर की है।

6. When the messengers returned, they told Jacob, 'We went to your brother Esau, and now he is heading this way with four hundred men.'

7. और तुम्हारे पिता ने मुझ से छल करके मेरी मजदूरी को दस बार बदल दिया; परन्तु परमेश्वर ने उसको मेरी हानि करने नहीं दिया।

7. Jacob was so frightened that he divided his people, sheep, cattle, and camels into two groups.

8. जब उस ने कहा, कि चित्तीवाले बच्चे तेरी मजदूरी ठहरेंगे, तब सब भेड़- बकरियां चित्तीवाले ही जनने लगीं, और जब उस ने कहा, कि धारीवाले बच्चे तेरी मजदूरी ठहरेंगे, तब सब भेड़- बकरियां धारीवाले जनने लगीं।

8. He thought, 'If Esau attacks one group, perhaps the other can escape.'

9. इस रीति से परमेश्वर ने तुम्हारे पिता के पशु लेकर मुझ को दे दिए।

9. Then Jacob prayed: You, LORD, are the God who was worshiped by my grandfather Abraham and by my father Isaac. You told me to return home to my family, and you promised to be with me and make me successful.

10. भेड़- बकरियों के गाभिन होने के समय मैं ने स्वप्न में क्या देखा, कि जो बकरे बकरियों पर चढ़ रहे हैं, सो धारीवाले, चित्तीवाले, और धब्बेवाले है।

10. I don't deserve all the good things you have done for me, your servant. When I first crossed the Jordan, I had only my walking stick, but now I have two large groups of people and animals.

11. और परमेश्वर के दूत ने स्वप्न में मुझ से कहा, हे याकूब : मैं ने कहा, क्या आज्ञा।

11. Please rescue me from my brother. I am afraid he will come and attack not only me, but my wives and children as well.

12. उस ने कहा, आंखे उठाकर उन सब बकरों को, जो बकरियों पर चढ़ रहे हैं, देख, कि वे धारीवाले, चित्तीवाले, और धब्बेवाले हैं; क्योंकि जो कुछ लाबान तुझ से करता है, सो मैं ने देखा है।

12. But you have promised that I would be a success and that someday it will be as hard to count my descendants as it is to count the stars in the sky.

13. मैं उस बेतेल का ईश्वर हूं, जहां तू ने एक खम्भे पर तेल डाल दिया, और मेरी मन्नत मानी थी : अब चल, इस देश से निकलकर अपनी जन्मभूमि को लौट जा।

13. After Jacob had spent the night there, he chose some animals as gifts for Esau:

14. तब राहेल और लिआ : ने उस से कहा, क्या हमारे पिता के घर में अब भी हमारा कुछ भाग वा अंश बचा है?

14. two hundred female goats and twenty males, two hundred female sheep and twenty males, thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten males.

15. क्या हम उसकी दृष्टि में पराये न ठहरीं? देख, उस ने हम को तो बेच डाला, और हमारे रूपे को खा बैठा है।

16. सो परमेश्वर ने हमारे पिता का जितना धन ले लिया है, सो हमारा, और हमारे लड़केबालों को है : अब जो कुछ परमेश्वर ने तुझ से कहा सो कर।

16. Jacob put servants in charge of each herd and told them, 'Go ahead of me and keep a space between each herd.'

17. तब याकूब ने अपने लड़केबालों और स्त्रियों को ऊंटों पर चढ़ाया;

17. Then he said to the servant in charge of the first herd, 'When Esau meets you, he will ask whose servant you are. He will want to know where you are going and who owns those animals in front of you.

18. और जितने पशुओं को वह प नराम में इकट्ठा करके धनाढय हो गया था, सब को कनान में अपने पिता इसहाक के पास जाने की मनसा से, साथ ले गया।

18. So tell him, 'They belong to your servant Jacob, who is coming this way. He is sending them as a gift to his master Esau.' '

19. लाबान तो अपनी भेड़ों का ऊन कतरने के लिये चला गया था। और राहेल अपने पिता के गृहदेवताओं को चुरा ले गई।

19. Jacob also told the men in charge of the second and third herds and those who followed to say the same thing when they met Esau.

20. सो याकूब लाबान अरामी के पास से चोरी से चला गया, उसको न बताया कि मैं भागा जाता हूं।

20. And Jacob told them to be sure to say that he was right behind them. Jacob hoped the gifts would make Esau friendly, so Esau would be glad to see him when they met.

21. वह अपना सब कुछ लेकर भागा : और महानद के पार उतरकर अपना मुंह गिलाद के पहाड़ी देश की ओर किया।।

21. Jacob's men took the gifts on ahead of him, but he spent the night in camp.

22. तीसरे दिन लाबान को समाचार मिला, कि याकूब भाग गया है।

22. Jacob got up in the middle of the night and took his wives, his eleven children, and everything he owned across to the other side of the Jabbok River for safety.

23. सो उस ने अपने भाइयों को साथ लेकर उसका सात दिन तक पीछा किया, और गिलाद के पहाड़ी देश में उसको जा पकड़ा।

23. (SEE 32:22)

24. तब परमेश्वर ने रात के स्वप्न में आरामी लाबान के पास आकर कहा, सावधान रह, तू याकूब से न तो भला कहना और न बुरा।

24. Afterwards, Jacob went back and spent the rest of the night alone. A man came and fought with Jacob until just before daybreak.

25. और लाबान याकूब के पास पहुंच गया, याकूब तो अपना तम्बू गिलाद नाम पहाड़ी देश में खड़ा किए पड़ा था : और लाबान ने भी अपने भाइयों के साथ अपना तम्बू उसी पहाड़ी देश में खड़ा किया।

25. When the man saw that he could not win, he struck Jacob on the hip and threw it out of joint.

26. तब लाबान याकूब से कहने लगा, तू ने यह क्या किया, कि मेरे पास से चोरी से चला आया, और मेरी बेटियों को ऐसा ले आया, जैसा कोई तलवार के बल से बन्दी बनाए गए?

26. They kept on wrestling until the man said, 'Let go of me! It's almost daylight.' 'You can't go until you bless me,' Jacob replied.

27. तू क्यों चुपके से भाग आया, और मुझ से बिना कुछ कहे मेरे पास से चोरी से चला आया; नहीं तो मैं तुझे आनन्द के साथ मृदंग और वीणा बजवाते, और गीत गवाते विदा करता ?

27. Then the man asked, 'What is your name?' 'Jacob,' he answered.

28. तू ने तो मुझे अपने बेटे बेटियों को चूमने तक न दिया? तू ने मूर्खता की है।

28. The man said, 'Your name will no longer be Jacob. You have wrestled with God and with men, and you have won. That's why your name will be Israel.'

29. तुम लोगों की हानि करने की शक्ति मेरे हाथ में तो है; पर तुम्हारे पिता के परमेश्वर ने मुझ से बीती हुई रात में कहा, सावधान रह, याकूब से न तो भला कहना और न बुरा।

29. Jacob said, 'Now tell me your name.' 'Don't you know who I am?' he asked. And he blessed Jacob.

30. भला अब तू अपने पिता के घर का बड़ा अभिलाषी होकर चला आया तो चला आया, पर मेरे देवताओं को तू क्यों चुरा ले आया है?

30. Jacob said, 'I have seen God face to face, and I am still alive.' So he named the place Peniel.

31. याकूब ने लाबान को उत्तर दिया, मैं यह सोचकर डर गया था : कि कहीं तू अपनी बेटियों को मुझ से छीन न ले।

31. The sun was coming up as Jacob was leaving Peniel. He was limping because he had been struck on the hip,

32. जिस किसी के पास तू अपने देवताओं को पाए, सो जीता न बचेगा। मेरे पास तेरा जो कुछ निकले, सो भाई- बन्धुओं के साम्हने पहिचानकर ले ले। क्योंकि याकूब न जानता था कि राहेल गृहदेवताओं को चुरा ले आई है।

32. and the muscle on his hip joint had been injured. That's why even today the people of Israel don't eat the hip muscle of any animal.
