1. जब शमूएल बूढ़ा हुआ, तब उस ने अपने पुत्रों को इस्राएलियों पर न्यायी ठहराया।

1. When Samuel got to be an old man, he set his sons up as judges in Israel.

2. उसके जेठे पुत्रा का नाम योएल, और दूसरे का नाम अबिरयाह था; ये बेर्शेबा में न्याय करते थे।

2. His firstborn son was named Joel, the name of his second, Abijah. They were assigned duty in Beersheba.

3. परन्तु उसके पुत्रा उसकी राह पर न चले, अर्थात् लालच में आकर घूस लेते और न्याय बिगाड़ते थे।।

3. But his sons didn't take after him; they were out for what they could get for themselves, taking bribes, corrupting justice.

4. तब सब इस्राएली वृद्ध लोग इकट्ठे होकर रामा में शमूएल के पास जाकर

4. Fed up, all the elders of Israel got together and confronted Samuel at Ramah.

5. उस से कहने लगे, सुन, तू तो अब बूढ़ा हो गया, और तेरे पुत्रा तेरी राह पर नहीं चलते; अब हम पर न्याय करने के लिये सब जातियों की रीति के अनुसार हमारे लिये एक राजा नियुक्त कर दे।

5. They presented their case: 'Look, you're an old man, and your sons aren't following in your footsteps. Here's what we want you to do: Appoint a king to rule us, just like everybody else.'

6. परन्तु जो बात उन्हों ने कही, कि हम पर न्याय करने के लिये हमारे ऊपर राजा नियुक्त कर दे, यह बात शमूएल को बुरी लगी। और शमूएल ने यहोवा से प्रार्थना की।

6. When Samuel heard their demand--'Give us a king to rule us!'--he was crushed. How awful! Samuel prayed to GOD.

7. और यहोवा ने शमूएल से कहा, वे लोग जो कुछ तुझ से कहें उसे मान ले; क्योंकि उन्हों ने तुझ को नहीं परन्तु मुझी को निकम्मा जाना है, कि मैं उनका राजा न रहूं।

7. GOD answered Samuel, 'Go ahead and do what they're asking. They are not rejecting you. They've rejected me as their King.

8. जैसे जैसे काम वे उस दिन से, जब से मैं उन्हें मि से निकाल लाया, आज के दिन तक करते आए हैं, कि मुझ को त्यागकर पराए, देवताओं की उपासना करते आए हैं, वैसे ही वे तुझ से भी करते हैं।

8. From the day I brought them out of Egypt until this very day they've been behaving like this, leaving me for other gods. And now they're doing it to you.

9. इसलिये अब तू उनकी बात मान; तौभी तू गम्भीरता से उनको भली भांति समझा दे, और उनको बतला भी दे कि जो राजा उन पर राज्य करेगा उसका व्यवहार किस प्रकार होगा।।

9. So let them have their own way. But warn them of what they're in for. Tell them the way kings operate, just what they're likely to get from a king.'

10. और शमूएल ने उन लोगों को जो उस से राजा चाहते थे यहोवा की सब बातें कह सुनाईं।

10. So Samuel told them, delivered GOD's warning to the people who were asking him to give them a king.

11. और उस ने कहा जो राजा तुम पर राज्य करेगा उसकी यह चाल होगी, अर्थात् वह तुम्हारे पुत्रों को लेकर अपने रथों और घोड़ों के काम पर नौकर रखेगा, और वे उसके रथों के आगे आगे दौड़ा करेंगे;

11. He said, 'This is the way the kind of king you're talking about operates. He'll take your sons and make soldiers of them--chariotry, cavalry, infantry,

12. फिर वह उनको हजार हजार और पचास पचास के ऊपर प्रधान बनाएगा, और कितनों से वह अपने हल जुतवाएगा, और अपने खेत कटवाएगा, और अपने लिये युद्ध के हथियार और रथों के साज बनवाएगा।

12. regimented in battalions and squadrons. He'll put some to forced labor on his farms, plowing and harvesting, and others to making either weapons of war or chariots in which he can ride in luxury.

13. फिर वह तुम्हारी बेटियों को लेकर उन से सुगन्धद्रव्य और रसोई और रोटियां बनवाएगा।

13. He'll put your daughters to work as beauticians and waitresses and cooks.

14. फिर वह तुम्हारे खेतों और दाख और जलपाई की बारियों में से जो अच्छी से अच्छी होंगे उन्हें ले लेकर अपने कर्मचारियों को देगा।

14. He'll conscript your best fields, vineyards, and orchards and hand them over to his special friends.

15. फिर वह तुम्हारे बीच और दाख की बारियों को दसवां अंश ले लेकर अपने हाकिमों और कर्मचारियों को देगा।

15. He'll tax your harvests and vintage to support his extensive bureaucracy.

16. फिर वह तुम्हारे दास- दासियों को, और तुम्हारे अच्छे से अच्छे जवानों को, और तुम्हारे गदहों को भी लेकर अपने काम में लगाएगा।

16. Your prize workers and best animals he'll take for his own use.

17. वह तुम्हारी भेड़- बकरियों का भी दसवां अंश लेगा; निदान तुम लोग उस के दास बन जाओगे।

17. He'll lay a tax on your flocks and you'll end up no better than slaves.

18. और उस दिन तुम अपने उस चुने हुए राजा के कारण दोहाई दोगे, परन्तु यहोवा उस समय तुम्हारी न सुनेगा।

18. The day will come when you will cry in desperation because of this king you so much want for yourselves. But don't expect GOD to answer.'

19. तौभी उन लोगों ने शमूएल की बात न सुनी; और कहने लगे, नहीं! हम निश्चय अपने लिये राजा चाहते हैं,
प्रेरितों के काम 13:21

19. But the people wouldn't listen to Samuel. 'No!' they said. 'We will have a king to rule us!

20. जिस से हम भी और सब जातियों के समान हो जाएं, और हमारा राजा हमारा न्याय करे, और हमारे आगे आगे चलकर हमारी ओर से युद्ध किया करे।

20. Then we'll be just like all the other nations. Our king will rule us and lead us and fight our battles.'

21. लोगों की ये सब बातें सुनकर शमूएल ने यहोवा के कानों तक पहुंचाया।

21. Samuel took in what they said and rehearsed it with GOD.

22. यहोवा ने शमूएल से कहा, उनकी बात मानकर उनके लिये राजा ठहरा दे। तब शमूएल ने इस्राएली मनुष्यों से कहा, तुम अब अपने अपने नगर को चले जाओ।।

22. GOD told Samuel, 'Do what they say. Make them a king.' Then Samuel dismissed the men of Israel: 'Go home, each of you to your own city.'
