1. फिर दाऊद रामा के नबायोत से भागा, और योनातन के पास जाकर कहने लगा, मैं ने क्या किया है? मुझ से क्या पाप हुआ? मैं ने तेरे पिता की दृष्टि में ऐसा कौन सा अपराध किया है, कि वह मेरे प्राण की खोज में रहता है?

1. And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? what [is] my iniquity? and what [is] my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?

2. उस ने उस से कहा, ऐसी बात नहीं है; तू मारा न जाएगा। सुन, मेरा पिता मुझ को बिना जताए न तो कोई बड़ा काम करता है और न कोई छोटा; फिर वह ऐसी बात को मुझ से क्यों छिपाएगा? ऐसी कोई बात नहीं है।

2. And he said to him, Far be it from thee; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will show it to me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? it [is] not [so].

3. फिर दाऊद ने शपथ खाकर कहा, तेरा पिता निश्चय जानता है कि तेरे अनुग्रह की दृष्टि मुझ पर है; और वह सोचता होगा, कि योनातन इस बात को न जानने पाए, ऐसा न हो कि वह खेदित हो जाए। परन्तु यहोवा के जीवन की शपथ और तेरे जीवन की शपथ, नि:सन्देह, मेरे और मृत्यु के बीच डग ही भर का अन्तर है।

3. And David swore moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thy eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he should be grieved: but truly [as] the LORD liveth, and [as] thy soul liveth, [there is] but a step between me and death.

4. योनातान ने दाऊद से कहा, जो कुछ तेरा जी चाहे वही मैं तेरे लिये करूंगा।

4. Then said Jonathan to David, Whatever thy soul desireth, I will even do [it] for thee.

5. दाऊद ने योनातान से कहा, सुन कल नया चाँद होगा, और मुझे उचित है कि राजा के साथ बैठकर भोजन करूं; परन्तु तू मुझे विदा कर, और मैं परसों सांझ तक मैदान में छिपा रहूंगा।

5. And David said to Jonathan, Behold, to morrow [is] the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at the table: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field to the third [day] at evening.

6. यदि तेरा पिता मेरी कुछ चिन्ता करे, तो कहना, कि दाऊद ने अपने नगर बेतलेहेम को शीघ्र जाने के लिये मुझ से बिनती करके छुट्टी मांगी है; क्योंकि वहां उसके समस्त कुल के लिये वार्षिक यज्ञ है।

6. If thy father shall at all miss me, then say, David earnestly asked [leave] of me that he might run to Bethlehem his city: for [there is] a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.

7. यदि वह यों कहे, कि अच्छा! तब तो तेरे दास के लिये कुशल होगा; परन्तु यदि उसका कोप बहुत भड़क उठे, तो जान लेना कि उस ने बुराई ठानी है।

7. If he shall say thus, [It is] well; thy servant shall have peace: but if he shall be very angry, [then] be sure that evil is determined by him.

8. और तू अपने दास से कृपा का व्यवहार करना, क्योंकि तू ने यहोवा की शपथ खिलाकर अपने दास को अपने साथ वाचा बन्धाई है। परन्तु यदि मुझ से कुछ अपराध हुआ हो, तो तू आप मुझे मार डाल; तू मुझे अपने पिता के पास क्यों पहुंचाए?

8. Therefore thou shalt deal kindly with thy servant; for thou hast brought thy servant into a covenant of the LORD with thee: however, if there is in me iniquity, slay me thyself; for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father?

9. योनातन ने कहा, ऐसी बात कभी न होगी! यदि मैं निश्चय जानता कि मेरे पिता ने तुझ से बुराई करनी ठानी है, तो क्या मैं तुझ को न बताता?

9. And Jonathan said, Far be it from thee: for if I knew certainly that evil is determined by my father to come upon thee, then would not I tell it thee?

10. दाऊद ने योनातन से कहा, यदि तेरा पिता तुझ को कठोर उत्तर दे, तो कौन मुझे बताएगा?

10. Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me? or what [if] thy father shall answer thee roughly?

11. योनातन ने दाऊद से कहा, चल हम मैदान को निकल जाएं। और वे दोनो मैदान की ओर चले गए।।

11. And Jonathan said to David, Come, and let us go out into the field. And they went out both of them into the field.

12. तब योनातन दाऊद से कहने लगा; इस्राएल के परमेश्वर यहोवा की शपथ, जब मैं कल वा परसों इसी समय अपने पिता का भेद पांऊ, तब यदि दाऊद की भलाई देखूं, तो क्या मैं उसी समय तेरे पास दूत भेजकर तुझे न बताऊंगा?

12. And Jonathan said to David, O LORD God of Israel, when I have sounded my father about to morrow any time, [or] the third [day], and, behold, [if there be] good toward David, and I then send not to thee, and show it thee;

13. यदि मेरे पिता का मन तेरी बुराई करने का हो, और मैं तुझ पर यह प्रगट करके तुझे विदा न करूँ कि तू कुशल के साथ चला जाए, तो यहोवा योनातन से ऐसा ही वरन इस से भी अधिक करे। और यहोवा तेरे साथ वैसा ही रहे जैसा वह मेरे पिता के साथ रहा।

13. The LORD do so and much more to Jonathan: but if it shall please my father [to do] thee evil, then I will show it to thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace: and the LORD be with thee, as he hath been with my father.

14. और न केवल जब तक मैं जीवित रहूं, तब तक मुझ पर यहोवा की सी कृपा ऐसा करना, कि मैं न मरूं;

14. And thou shalt not only while yet I live show me the kindness of the LORD, that I may not die:

15. परन्तु मेरे घराने पर से भी अपनी कृपादृष्टि कभी न हटाना! वरन जब यहोवा दाऊद के हर एक शत्रु को पृथ्वी पर से नाश कर चुकेगा, तब भी ऐसा न करना।

15. But [also] thou shalt not withdraw thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the LORD hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.

16. इस प्रकार योनातन ने दाऊद के घराने से यह कहकर वाचा बन्धाई, कि यहोवा दाऊद के शत्रुओं से पलटा ले।

16. So Jonathan made [a covenant] with the house of David, [saying], Let the LORD even require [it] at the hand of David's enemies.

17. और योनातन दाऊद से प्रेम रखता था, और उस ने उसको फिर शपथ खिलाई; क्योंकि वह उस ने अपने प्राण के बारबर प्रेम रखता था।

17. And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

18. तब योनातन ने उस से कहा, कल नया चाँद होगा; और तेरी चिन्ता की जाएगी, क्योंकि तेरी कुर्सी खाली रहेगी।

18. Then Jonathan said to David, To morrow [is] the new moon: and thou shalt be missed, because thy seat will be empty.

19. और तू तीन दिन के बीतने पर तुरन्त आना, और उस स्थान पर जाकर जहां तू उस काम के दिन छिपा था, अर्थात् एजेल नाम पत्थर के पास रहना।

19. And [when] thou hast stayed three days, [then] thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself when the business was [in hand], and shalt remain by the stone Ezel.

20. तब मैं उसकी अलंग, मानो अपने किसी ठहराए हुए चिन्ह पर तीन तीर चलाऊंगा।

20. And I will shoot three arrows on the side [of it], as though I shot at a mark.

21. फिर मैं अपने टहलुए छोकरे को यह कहकर भेजूंगा, कि जाकर तीरों को ढूंढ ले आ। यदि मैं उस छोकरे से साफ साफ कहूं, कि देख तीर इधर तेरी इस अलंग पर हैं, तो तू उसे ले आ, क्योंकि यहोवा के जीवन की शपथ, तेरे लिये कुशल को छोड़ और कुछ न होगा।

21. And, behold, I will send a lad, [saying], Go, find the arrows. If I expressly say to the lad, Behold, the arrows [are] on this side of thee, take them; then come thou: for [there is] peace to thee, and no hurt; [as] the LORD liveth.

22. परन्तु यदि मैं छोकरे से यों कहूं, कि सुन, तीर उधर तेरे उस अलंग पर है, तो तू चला जाना, क्योंकि यहोवा ने तुझे विदा किया है।

22. But if I say thus to the young man, Behold, the arrows [are] beyond thee; go thy way: for the LORD hath sent thee away.

23. और उस बात के विषय जिसकी चर्चा मैं ने और तू ने आपस में की है, यहोवा मेरे और तेरे मध्य में सदा रहे।।

23. And [as to] the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, the LORD [be] between thee and me for ever.

24. इसलिये दाऊद मैदान में जा छिपा; और जब नया चाँद हुआ, तक राजा भोजन करने को बैठा।

24. So David hid himself in the field: and when the new moon had come, the king sat down to eat food.

25. राजा तो पहिले की नाईं अपने उस आसन पर बैठा जो भीत के पास था; और योनातन खड़ा हुआ, और अब्नेर शाऊल के निकट बैठा, परन्तु दाऊद का स्थान खाली रहा।

25. And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, [even] upon a seat by the wall: and Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul's side, and David's place was empty.

26. उस दिन तो शाऊल यह सोचकर चुप रहा, कि इसका कोई न कोई कारण होगा; वह अशुद्ध होगा, नि:सन्देह शुद्ध न होगा।

26. Nevertheless Saul spoke not any thing that day: for he thought, Something hath befallen him, he [is] not clean; surely he [is] not clean.

27. फिर नये चाँद के दूसरे दिन को दाऊद का स्थान खाली रहा। और शाऊल ने अपने पुत्रा योनातन से पूछा, क्या कारण है कि यिशै का पुत्रा न तो कल भोजन पर आया था, और न आज ही आया है?

27. And it came to pass on the next day, [which was] the second [day] of the month, that David's place was empty: and Saul said to Jonathan his son, Why cometh not the son of Jesse to eat, neither yesterday, nor to day?

28. योनातन ने शाऊल से कहा, दाऊद ने बेतलेहेम जाने के लिये मुझ से बिनती करके छुट्टी मांगी;

28. And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked [leave] of me [to go] to Bethlehem:

29. और कहा, मुझे जाने दे; क्योंकि उस नगर में हमारे कुल का यज्ञ है, और मेरे भाई ने मुझ को वहां उपस्थित होने की आज्ञा दी है। और अब यदि मुझ पर तेरे अनुग्रह की दृष्टि हो, तो मुझे जाने दे कि मैं अपने भाइयों से भेंट कर आऊं। इसी कारण वह राजा की मेज पर नहीं आया।

29. And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me [to be there]: and now, if I have found favour in thy eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not to the king's table.

30. तब शाऊल का कोप योनातन पर भड़क उठा, और उस ने उस से कहा, हे कुटिला राजद्रोही के पुत्रा, क्या मैं नहीं जानता कि तेरा मन तो यिशै के पुत्रा पर लगा है? इसी से तेरी आशा का टूटना और तेरी माता का अनादर ही होगा।

30. Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious [woman], do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thy own shame, and to the shame of thy mother's nakedness?

31. क्योंकि जब तक यिशै का पुत्रा भूमि पर जीवित रहेगा, तब तक न तो तू और न तेरा राज्य स्थिर रहेगा। इसलिये अभी भेजकर उसे मेरे पास ला, क्योंकि निश्चय वह मार डाला जाएगा।

31. For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the earth, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Therefore now send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die.

32. योनातन ने अपने पिता शाऊल को उत्तर देकर उस से कहा, वह क्यों मारा जाए? उस ने क्या किया है?

32. And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said to him, Why shall he be slain? what hath he done?

33. तब शाऊल ने उसको मारने के लिये उस पर भाला चलाया; इससे योनातन ने जान लिया, कि मेरे पिता ने दाऊद को मार डालना ठान लिया है।

33. And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: by which Jonathan knew that it was determined by his father to slay David.

34. तब योनातन क्रोध से जलता हुआ मेज पर से उठ गया, और महीने के दूसरे दिन को भोजन न किया, क्योंकि वह बहुत खेदित था, इसलिये कि उसके पिता ने दाऊद का अनादर किया था।।

34. So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.

35. बिहान को योनातन एक छोटा लड़का संग लिए हुए मैदान में दाऊद के साथ ठहराए हुए स्थान को गया।

35. And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him.

36. तब उस ने अपने छोकरे से कहा, दौड़कर जो जो तीर मैं चलाऊं उन्हें ढूंढ़ ले आ। छोकरा दौड़ता ही था, कि उस ने एक तीर उसके परे चलाया।

36. And he said to his lad, Run, find now the arrows which I shoot. [And] as the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.

37. जब छोकरा योनातन के चलाए तीर के स्थान पर पहुंचा, तब योनातन ने उसके पीछे से पुकारके कहा, तीर तो तेरी परली ओर है।

37. And when the lad had come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, [Is] not the arrow beyond thee?

38. फिर योनातन ने छोकरे के पीछे से पुकारकर कहा, बड़ी फुर्ती कर, ठहर मत। और योनातन ने छोकरे के पीछे से पुकारके कहा, बड़ी फुर्ती कर, ठहर मत! और योनातन का छोकरा तीरों को बटोरके अपने स्वामी के पास ल आया।

38. And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not. And Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.

39. इसका भेद छोकरा तो कुछ न जानता था; केवल योनातन और दाऊद इस बात को जानते थे।

39. But the lad knew not any thing: only Jonathan and David knew the matter.

40. और योनातन ने अपने हथियार अपने छोकरे को देकर कहा, जा, इन्हें नगर को पहुंचा।

40. And Jonathan gave his weapons to his lad, and said to him, Go, carry [them] to the city.

42. तब योनातन ने दाऊद से कहा, कुशल से चला जा; क्योंकि हम दोनों ने एक दूसरे से यह कहके यहोवा के नाम की शपथ खाई है, कि यहोवा मेरे और तेरे मध्य, और मेरे और तेरे वंश के मध्य में सदा रहे। तब वह उठकर चला गया; और योनातन नगर में गया।।

42. And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.
