1. हे भाइयों, और पितरो, मेरा प्रत्युत्तर सुनो, जो मैं अब तुम्हारे साम्हने कहता हूं।।

1. 'My dear brothers and fathers, listen carefully to what I have to say before you jump to conclusions about me.'

2. वे यह सुनकर कि वह हम से इब्रानी भाषा में बोलता है, और भी चुप रहे। तब उस ने कहा;

2. When they heard him speaking Hebrew, they grew even quieter. No one wanted to miss a word of this. He continued,

3. मैं तो यहूदी मनुष्य हूं, जो किलिकिया के तरसुस में जन्मा; परन्तु इस नगर में गमलीएल के पांवों के पास बैठकर पढ़ाया गया, और बापदादों की व्यवस्था की ठीक रीति पर सिखाया गया; और परमेश्वर के लिये ऐसी धुन लगाए था, जैसे तुम सब आज लगाए हो।

3. 'I am a good Jew, born in Tarsus in the province of Cilicia, but educated here in Jerusalem under the exacting eye of Rabbi Gamaliel, thoroughly instructed in our religious traditions. And I've always been passionately on God's side, just as you are right now.

4. और मैं ने पुरूष और स्त्री दोनों को बान्ध बान्धकर, और बन्दीगृह में डाल डालकर, इस पंथ को यहां तक सताया, कि उन्हें मरवा भी डाला।

4. 'I went after anyone connected with this 'Way,' went at them hammer and tongs, ready to kill for God. I rounded up men and women right and left and had them thrown in prison.

5. इस बात के लिये महायाजक और सब पुरनिये गवाह हैं; कि उन में से मैं भाइयों के नाम पर चिटि्ठयां लेकर दमिश्क को चला जा रहा था, कि जो वहां हों उन्हें भी दण्ड दिलाने के लिये बान्धकर यरूशलेम में लाऊं।

5. You can ask the Chief Priest or anyone in the High Council to verify this; they all knew me well. Then I went off to our brothers in Damascus, armed with official documents authorizing me to hunt down the Christians there, arrest them, and bring them back to Jerusalem for sentencing.

6. जब मैं चलते चलते दमिश्क के निकट पहुंचा, तो ऐसा हुआ कि दो पहर के लगभग एकाएक एक बड़ी ज्योति आकाश से मेरे चारों ओर चमकी।

6. 'As I arrived on the outskirts of Damascus about noon, a blinding light blazed out of the skies

7. और मैं भूमि पर गिर पड़ा: और यह शब्द सुना, कि हे शाऊल, हे शाऊल, तू मुझे क्यों सताता है? मैं ने उत्तर दिया, कि हे प्रभु, तू कौन है?

7. and I fell to the ground, dazed. I heard a voice: 'Saul, Saul, why are you out to get me?'

8. उस ने मुझ से कहा; मैं यीशु नासरी हूं, जिस तू सताता है?

8. ''Who are you, Master?' I asked. 'He said, 'I am Jesus the Nazarene, the One you're hunting down.'

9. और मेरे साथियों ने ज्योति तो देखी, परन्तु जो मुझ से बोलता था उसका शब्द न सुना।

9. My companions saw the light, but they didn't hear the conversation.

10. तब मै। ने कहा; हे प्रभु मैं क्या करूं? प्रभु ने मुझ से कहा; उठकर दमिश्क में जा, और जो कुद तेरे करने के लिये ठहराया गया है वहां तुझ से सब कह दिया जाएगा।

10. 'Then I said, 'What do I do now, Master?' 'He said, 'Get to your feet and enter Damascus. There you'll be told everything that's been set out for you to do.'

11. जब उस ज्योति के तेज के मारे मुझे कुछ दिखाई न दिया, तो मैं अपने साथियों के हाथ पकड़े हुए दमिश्क में आया।

11. And so we entered Damascus, but nothing like the entrance I had planned--I was blind as a bat and my companions had to lead me in by the hand.

12. और हनन्याह नाम का व्यवस्था के अनुसार एक भक्त मनुष्य, जो वहां के रहनेवाले सब यहूदियों में सुनाम था, मेरे पास आया।

12. 'And that's when I met Ananias, a man with a sterling reputation in observing our laws--the Jewish community in Damascus is unanimous on that score.

13. और खड़ा होकर मुझ से कहा; हे भाई शाऊल फिर देखने लग: उसी घड़ी मेरे नेत्रा खुल गए और मैं ने उसे देखा।

13. He came and put his arm on my shoulder. 'Look up,' he said. I looked, and found myself looking right into his eyes--I could see again!

14. तब उस ने कहा; हमारे बापदादों के परमेश्वर ने तुझे इसलिये ठहराया है, कि तू उस की इच्छा को जाने, और उस धर्मी को देखे, और उसके मुंह से बातें सुने।

14. 'Then he said, 'The God of our ancestors has handpicked you to be briefed on his plan of action. You've actually seen the Righteous Innocent and heard him speak.

15. क्योंकि तू उस की ओर से सब मनुष्यों के साम्हने उन बातों का गवाह होगा, जो तू ने देखी और सुनी हैं।

15. You are to be a key witness to everyone you meet of what you've seen and heard.

16. अब क्यों देर करता है? उठ, बपतिस्मा ले, और उसका नाम लेकर अपने पापों को धो डाल।

16. So what are you waiting for? Get up and get yourself baptized, scrubbed clean of those sins and personally acquainted with God.'

17. जब मैं फिर यरूशलेम में आकर मन्दिर में प्रार्थना कर रहा था, तो बेसुध हो गया।

17. 'Well, it happened just as Ananias said. After I was back in Jerusalem and praying one day in the Temple, lost in the presence of God,

18. और उस ने देखा कि मुझ से कहता है; जल्दी करके यरूशलेम से झट निकल जा: क्योंकि वे मेरे विषय में तेरी गवाही न मानेंगे।

18. I saw him, saw God's Righteous Innocent, and heard him say to me, 'Hurry up! Get out of here as quickly as you can. None of the Jews here in Jerusalem are going to accept what you say about me.'

19. मैं ने कहा; हे प्रभु वे तो आप जानते हैं, कि मैं तुझ पर विश्वास करनेवालों को बन्दीगृह में डालता और जगह जगह आराधनालय में पिटवाता था।

19. 'At first I objected: 'Who has better credentials? They all know how obsessed I was with hunting out those who believed in you, beating them up in the meeting places and throwing them in jail.

20. और जब तेरे गवाह स्तिफनुस का लोहू बहाया जा रहा था तब मैं भी वहां खड़ा था, और इस बात में सहमत था, और उसके घातकों के कपड़ों की रखवाली करता था।

20. And when your witness Stephen was murdered, I was right there, holding the coats of the murderers and cheering them on. And now they see me totally converted. What better qualification could I have?'

21. और उस ने मुझ से कहा, चला जा: क्योंकि मैं तुझे अन्यजातियों के पास दूर दूर भेजूंगा।।

21. 'But he said, 'Don't argue. Go. I'm sending you on a long journey to outsider Gentiles.''

22. वे इस बात तक उस की सुनते रहे; तब ऊंचे शब्द से चिल्लाए, कि ऐसे मनुष्य का अन्त करो; उसका जीवित रहता उचित नहीं।

22. The people in the crowd had listened attentively up to this point, but now they broke loose, shouting out, 'Kill him! He's an insect! Stomp on him!'

23. जब वे चिल्लाते और कपड़े फेंकते और आकाश में धूल उड़ाते थे;

23. They shook their fists. They filled the air with curses.

24. तो पलटन के सूबेदार ने कहा; कि इसे गढ़ में ले जाओ; और कोड़े मारकर जांचो, कि मैं जानूं कि लोग किस कारण उसके विरोध में ऐसा चिल्ला रहे हैं।

24. That's when the captain intervened and ordered Paul taken into the barracks. By now the captain was thoroughly exasperated. He decided to interrogate Paul under torture in order to get to the bottom of this, to find out what he had done that provoked this outraged violence.

25. जब उन्हों ने उसे तसमों से बान्धा तो पौलुस ने उस सूबेदार से जो पास खड़ा था कहा, क्या यह उचित है, कि तुम एक रोमी मनुष्य को, और वह भी बिना दोषी ठहराए हुए कोड़े मारो?

25. As they spread-eagled him with thongs, getting him ready for the whip, Paul said to the centurion standing there, 'Is this legal: torturing a Roman citizen without a fair trial?'

26. सूबेदार ने यह सुनकर पलटन के सरदार के पास जाकर कहा; तू यह क्या करता है? यह तो रामी है।

26. When the centurion heard that, he went directly to the captain. 'Do you realize what you've done? This man is a Roman citizen!'

27. तब पलटन के सरदार ने उसके पास आकर कहा; मुझे बता, क्या तू रोमी है? उस ने कहा, हां।

27. The captain came back and took charge. 'Is what I hear right? You're a Roman citizen?' Paul said, 'I certainly am.'

28. यह सुनकर पलटन के सरदार ने कहा; कि मैं ने रोमी होने का पद बहुत रूपये देकर पाया है: पौलुस ने कहा, मैं तो जन्म से रोमी हूं।

28. The captain was impressed. 'I paid a huge sum for my citizenship. How much did it cost you?' 'Nothing,' said Paul. 'It cost me nothing. I was free from the day of my birth.'

29. तब जो लोग उसे जांचने पर थे, वे तुरन्त उसके पास से हट गए; और पलटन का सरदार भी यह जानकर कि यह रोमी है, और मैं ने उसे बान्धा है, डर गया।।

29. That put a stop to the interrogation. And it put the fear of God into the captain. He had put a Roman citizen in chains and come within a whisker of putting him under torture!

30. दूसरे दिन वह ठीक ठीक जानने की इच्छा से कि यहूदी उस पर क्यों दोष लगाते हैं, उसके बन्धन खोल दिए; और महायाजकों और सारी महासभा को इकट्ठे होने की आज्ञा दी, और पौलुस को नीचे ले जाकर उन के साम्हने खड़ा कर दिया।।

30. The next day, determined to get to the root of the trouble and know for sure what was behind the Jewish accusation, the captain released Paul and ordered a meeting of the high priests and the High Council to see what they could make of it. Paul was led in and took his place before them.
