1. यहोवा की यह वाणी है, हे इस्राएल यदि तू लौट आये, तो मेरे पास लौट आ। यदि तू घिनौनी वस्तुओं को मेरे साम्हने से दूर करे, तो तुझे अवारा फिरना न पड़ेगा,

1. IF YOU will return, O Israel, says the Lord, if you will return to Me, and if you will put away your abominable false gods out of My sight and not stray or waver,

2. और यदि तू सच्चाई और न्याय और धर्म से यहोवा के जीवन की शपथ खाए, तो अन्यजातियां उसके कारण अपने आपको धन्य कहेंगी, और उसी पर घमण्ड करेंगी।

2. And if you swear, As the Lord lives, in truth, in judgment and justice, and in righteousness (uprightness in every area and relation), then the nations will bless themselves in Him and in Him will they glory.

3. क्योंकि यहूदा और यरूशलेम के लोगों से यहोवा ने यों कहा है, अपनी पड़ती भूमि को जोतो, और कटीले झाड़ों में बीज मत बोओ।

3. For thus says the Lord to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem: Break up your ground left uncultivated for a season, so that you may not sow among thorns.

4. हे यहूदा के लोगो और यरूशलेम के निवासियो, यहोवा के लिये अपना खतना करो; हां, अपने मन का खतना करो; नहीं तो तुम्हारे बुरे कामों के कारण मेरा क्रोध आग की नाई भड़केगा, और ऐसा होगा की कोई उसे बुझा न सकेगा।

4. Circumcise yourselves to the Lord and take away the foreskins of your hearts, you men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, lest My wrath go forth like fire [consuming all that gets in its way] and burn so that no one can quench it because of the evil of your doings.

5. यहूदा में प्रचार करो और यरूशलेम में यह सुनाओ; पूरे देश में नरसिंगा फूंको; गला खोलकर ललकारो और कहो, आओ, हम इकट्ठे हों ओर गढ़वाले नगरों में जाएं !

5. Declare in Judah and publish in Jerusalem and say: Blow the trumpet in the land; cry aloud and say: Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the fortified cities.

6. सिरयोन के मार्ग में झण्डा खड़ा करो, अपना सामान बटोरके भागोे, खड़े मत रहो, क्योंकि मैं उत्तर की दिशा से विपत्ति और सत्यानाश ले आया चाहता हूँ।

6. Raise a standard toward Zion [to mark out the safest route to those seeking safety within Jerusalem's walls]! Flee for safety, stay not, for I bring evil from the north, and great destruction.

7. एक सिंह अपनी झाड़ी से निकला, जाति जाति का नाश करनेवाला चढ़ाई करके आ रहा है; वह कूच करके अपने स्थान से इसलिये निकला है कि तुम्हारे देश को उजाड़ दे और तुम्हारे नगरों को ऐसा सुनसान कर दे कि उन में कोई बसनेवाला न रहने पाए।

7. A lion has gone up from his thicket, and a destroyer of nations is on his way. He has gone forth from his place to make your land a desolate waste; and your cities shall be left in ruins without an inhabitant.

8. इसलिये कमर में टाट बान्धोे, विलाप और हाय हाय करो; क्योंकि यहोवा का भड़का हुआ कोप हम पर से टला नहीं है।

8. For this, gird yourselves with sackcloth, lament and wail, for the fierce anger of the Lord has not turned back from us.

9. उस समय राजा और हाकिमों का कलेजा कांप उठेगा; याजक चकित होंगे और नबी अचम्भित हो जाएंगे, यहोवा की यह वाणी है।

9. And it shall be in that day, says the Lord, that the understanding and courage of the king shall fail (be paralyzed), and also that of the princes; the priests shall be appalled and the prophets astounded and dazed with horror.

10. तब मैं ने कहा, हाय, प्रभु यहोवा, तू ने तो यह कहकर कि तुम को शान्ति मिलेगी निश्चय अपनी इस प्रजा को और यरूशलेम को भी बड़ा धोखा दिया है; क्योंकि तलवार प्राणों को मिटाने पर है।

10. Then I [Jeremiah] said, Alas, Lord God! Surely You have greatly deceived and misled this people and Jerusalem, [for the prophets represented You as] saying [to Your people], You shall have peace, whereas the sword has reached to [their very] life.

11. उस समय तेरी इस प्रजा से और यरूशलेम सें भी कहा जाएगा, जंगल के मुण्डे टीलों पर से प्रजा के लोगों की ओर लू बह रही है, वह ऐसी वायु नहीं जिस से ओसाना वा फरछाना हो,

11. At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A hot wind from the bare heights in the wilderness [comes at My command] against the daughter of My people--not [a wind] to fan or cleanse [from chaff, as when threshing, but]

12. परन्तु मेरी ओर से ऐसे कामों के लिये अधिक प्रचण्ड वायु बहेगी। अब मैं उनको दण्ड की आज्ञा दूंगा।

12. A wind too strong and full for winnowing comes at My word. Now I will also speak in judgment against [My people].

13. देखो, वह बादलों की नाई चढ़ाई करके आ रहा है, उसके रथ बवण्डर के समान और उसके घोड़े उकाबों से भी अधिक वेग से चलते हैं। हम पर हाय, हम नाश हुए !

13. Behold, [the enemy] comes up like clouds, his chariots like the whirlwind; his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe to us, for we are ruined (destroyed)!

14. हे यरूशलेम, अपना हृदय बुराई से धो, कि, तुम्हारा उठ्ठार हो जाए। तुम कब तक व्यर्थ कल्पनाएं करते रहोगे?

14. O Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved! How long shall your iniquitous and grossly offensive thoughts lodge within you?

15. क्योंकि दान से शब्द सुन पड़ रहा है और एप्रैम के पहाड़ी देश से विपत्ति का समाचार आ रहा है।

15. For a voice declares from Dan [in the north] and proclaims evil from Mount Ephraim [the range dividing Israel from Judah].

16. अन्यजातियों में सुना दो, यरूशलेम को भी इसका समाचार दो, पहरूए दूर देश से आकर यहूदा के नगरों के विरूद्ध ललकार रहे हैं।

16. Warn the [neighboring] nations [that our adversary is coming]; announce to Jerusalem that besiegers are coming from a far country, and they shout against the cities of Judah.

17. वे खेत के रखवालों की नाई उसको चारों ओर से घेर रहे हैं, क्योंकि उस ने मुझ से बलवा किया है, यहोवा की यही वाणी है।

17. Like keepers of a field they are against her round about, because she has been rebellious against Me, says the Lord.

18. यह तेरी चाल और तेरे कामों ही का फल हैं। यह तेरी दुष्टता है और अति दुखदाई है; इस से तेरा हृदय छिद जाता है।

18. Your ways and your doings have brought these things upon you. This is your calamity and doom; surely it is bitter, for surely it reaches your very heart!

19. हाय ! हाय ! मेरा हृदय भीतर ही भीतर तड़पता है ! और मेरा मन घबराता है ! मैं चुप नहीं रह सकता; क्योंकि हे मेरे प्राण, नरसिंगे का शब्द और युठ्ठ की ललकार तुझ तक पहुंची है।

19. [It is not only the prophet but also the people who cry out in their thoughts] My anguish, my anguish! I writhe in pain! Oh, the walls of my heart! My heart is disquieted and throbs aloud within me; I cannot be silent! For I have heard the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.

20. नाश पर नाश का समाचार आ रहा है, सारा देश लूट लिया गया है। मेरे डेरे अचानक ओर मेरे तम्बू एकाएक लूटे गए हैं।

20. News of one violent disaster and calamity comes close after another, for the whole land is laid waste; suddenly are my tents spoiled and destroyed, and my [tent] curtains ruined in a moment.

21. और कितने दिन तक मुझे उनका झगडा देखना और नरसिंगे का शब्द सुनना पड़ेगा?

21. [O Lord] how long must I see the flag [marking the route for flight] and hear the sound of the trumpet [urging the people to flee for refuge]?

22. क्योंकि मेरी प्रजा मूढ़ है, वे मुझे नहीं जानते; वे ऐसे मूर्ख लड़के हैं जिन में कुछ भी समझ नहीं। बुराई करने को तो वे बुध्दिमान हैं, परन्तु भलाई करना वे नहीं जानते।

22. [Their chastisement will continue until it has accomplished its purpose] for My people are stupid, says the Lord [replying to Jeremiah]; they do not know and understand Me. They are thickheaded children, and they have no understanding. They are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge [and know not how].

23. मैं ने पृथ्वी पर देखा, वह सूनी और सुनसान पड़ी थी; और आकाश को, और उस में कोई ज्योति नहीं थी।

23. [In a vision Jeremiah sees Judah laid waste by conquest and captivity.] I looked at the land, and behold, it was [as at the time of creation] waste and vacant (void); and at the heavens, and they had no light.

24. मैं ने पहाड़ों को देखा, मे हिल रहे थे, और सब पहाड़ियों को कि वे डोल रही थीं।

24. I looked at the mountains, and behold, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly to and fro.

25. फिर मैं ने क्या देखा कि कोई पनुष्य भी न था और सब पक्षी भी उड़ गए थे।

25. I looked, and behold, there was no man, and all the birds of the air had fled.

26. फिर मैं क्या देखता हूँ कि यहोवा के प्रताप और उस भड़के हुए प्रकोप के कारण उपजाऊ देश जंगल, और उसके सारे नगर खण्डहर हो गए थे।

26. I looked, and behold, the fruitful land was a desert, and all its cities were laid waste before the Lord's presence, before His fierce anger.

27. क्योंकि यहोवा ने यह बताया कि सारा देश उजाड़ हो जाएगा; तौभी मैं उसका अन्त न कर डालूंगा।

27. For thus says the Lord: The whole land will be a desolation, yet I will not make a full and complete end of it. [Jer. 5:10, 18; 30:11; 46:28.]

28. इस कारण पृथ्वी विलाप करेगी, और आकाश शोक का काला वस्त्रा पहिनेगा; क्योंकि मैं ने ऐसा ही करते को ठाना और कहा भी है; मैं इस से नहीं पछताऊंगा और न अपने प्रण को छोड़ूंगा।

28. For this will the earth mourn and the heavens above be black; because I have spoken, I have purposed, and I will not relent, nor will I turn back [from it].

29. नगर के सारे लोग सवारों और धनुर्धारियों का कोलाहल ससुनकर भागे जाते हैं; वे झाड़ियों में घुसते और चट्टानों पर चढ़े जाते हैं; सब नगर निर्जन हो गए, और उन में कोई बाकी न रहा।

29. Every city flees because of the noise of the horsemen and bowmen. They go into the thickets and climb among the rocks; every city is forsaken, and not a man dwells in them.

30. और तू जब उजड़ेगी तब क्या करेगी? चाहे तू लाल रड़ग के वस्त्रा पहिने और सोने के आभूषण धारण करे और अपनी आंखों में अंजन लगाए, परन्तु व्यर्थ ही तू अपना शृंगार करेगी। क्योंकि तेरे मित्रा तुझे निकम्मी जानते हैं; वे तेरे प्राणों के खोजी हैं।

30. And you [plundered one], when you are made desolate, what will you do? Though you clothe yourself with scarlet, though you deck yourself with ornaments of gold, though you paint your eyelids and make them look farther apart, in vain you beautify yourself. Your lovers (allies) despise you; they seek your life.

31. क्योंकि मैं ने ज़च्चा का शब्द, पहिलौठा जनती हुई स्त्री की सी चिल्लाहट सुनी है, यह सिरयोन की बेटी का शब्द है, जो हांफती और हाथ फैलाए हुए यों कहती है, हाय मुझ पर, मैं हत्यारों के हाथ पड़कर मूर्छित हो चली हूँ।

31. For I have heard a cry as of a woman in travail, the anguish as of one who brings forth her first child--the cry of the Daughter of Zion, who gasps for breath, who spreads her hands, saying, Woe is me now! I am fainting before the murderers.
