1. जब तू परमेश्वर के भवन में जाए, तब सावधानी से चलना; सुनने के लिये समीप जाना मूर्खों के बलिदान चढ़ाने से अच्छा है; क्योंकि वे नहीं जानते कि बुरा करते हैं।

1. Be in no hurry to speak; do not hastily declare yourself before God; for God is in heaven, you on earth. Be sparing, then, of speech:

2. बातें करने में उतावली न करना, और न अपने मन से कोई बात उतावली से परमेश्वर के साम्हने निकालना, क्योंकि परमेश्वर स्वर्ग में हैं और तू पृथ्वी पर है; इसलिये तेरे वचन थोड़े ही हों।।

2. From too much worrying comes illusion, from too much talking, the accents of folly.

3. क्योंकि जैसे कार्य की अधिकता के कारण स्वप्न देखा जाता है, वेैसे ही बहुत सी बातों का बोलनेवाला मूर्ख ठहरता है।

3. If you make a vow to God, discharge it without delay, for God has no love for fools. Discharge your vow.

4. जब तू परमेश्वर के लिये मन्नत माने, तब उसके पूरा करने में विलम्ब न करना; क्यांकि वह मूर्खों से प्रसन्न नहीं होता। जो मन्नत तू ने मानी हो उसे पूरी करना।

4. Better a vow unmade than made and not discharged.

5. मन्नत मानकर पूरी न करने से मन्नत का न मानना ही अच्छा है।

5. Do not allow your mouth to make a sinner of you, and do not say to the messenger that it was a mistake. Why give God occasion to be angry with you and ruin all the work that you have done?

6. कोई वचन कहकर अपने को पाप में ने फंसाना, और न ईश्वर के दूत के साम्हने कहना कि यह भूल से हुआ; परमेश्वर क्यों तेरा बोल सुनकर अप्रसन्न हो, और तेरे हाथ के कार्यों को नष्ट करे?

6. From too many illusions come futility and too much talk. Therefore, fear God.

7. क्योंकि स्वप्नों की अधिकता से व्यर्थ बातों की बहुतायत होती है: परन्तु तू परमेश्वर को भय मानना।।

7. If in a province you see the poor oppressed, fair judgement and justice violated, do not be surprised, for over every official there watches a higher official, and over these, higher officials still.

8. यदि तू किसी प्रान्त में निर्धनों पर अन्धेर और न्याय और धर्म को बिगड़ता देखे, तो इस से चकित न होना; क्योंकि एक अधिकारी से बड़ा दूसरा रहता है जिसे इन बातों की सुधि रहती है, और उन से भी ओर अधिक बड़े रहते हैं।

8. But what the land yields is for the benefit of all, a king is served by the fields.

9. भूमि की उपज सब के लिये है, वरन खेती से राजा का भी काम निकलता है।

9. No one who loves money ever has enough, no one who loves luxury has any income; this, too, is futile.

10. जो रूपये से प्रीति रखता है वह रूपये से तृप्त न होगा; और न जो बहुत धन से प्रीति रखता है, लाभ से: यह भी व्यर्थ है।

10. Where goods abound, parasites abound: where is the owner's profit, apart from feasting his eyes?

11. जब सम्पत्ति बढ़ती है, तो उसके खानेवाले भी बढ़ते हैं, तब उसके स्वामी को इसे छोड़ और क्या लाभ होता है कि उस सम्पत्ति को अपनी आंखों से देखे?

11. The labourer's sleep is sweet, whether he has eaten little or much, but the surfeit of the rich will not let him sleep at all.

12. परिश्रम करनेवाला चाहे थोड़ा खाए, या बहुत, तौभी उसकी नींद सुखदाई होती है; परन्तु धनी के धन के बढ़ने के कारण उसको नींद नहीं आती।

12. Something grossly unjust I observe under the sun: riches stored and turning to loss for their owner.

13. मैं ने धरती पर एक बड़ी बुरी बला देखी है; अर्थात् वह धन जिसे उसके मालिक ने अपनी ही हानि के लिये रखा हो,

13. An unlucky venture, and those riches are lost; a son is born to him, and he has nothing to leave him.

14. और वह किसी बुरे काम में उड़ जाता है; और उसके घर में बेटा उत्पन्न होता है परन्तु उसके हाथ मे कुछ नही रहता।

14. Naked from his mother's womb he came; as naked as he came will he depart; not one of his achievements can he take with him.

15. जैसा वह मां के पेट से निकला वैसा ही लौट जाएगा; नंगा ही, जैसा आया था, और अपने परिश्रम के बदले कुछ भी न पाएगा जिसे वह अपने हाथ में ले जा सके।

15. And something else grossly unjust: that as he came, so must he go; what profit can he show after toiling to earn the wind,

16. यह भी एक बड़ी बला है कि जैसा वह आया, ठीक वैसा ही वह जाएगा; उसे उस व्यर्थ परिश्रम से और क्या लाभ है?

16. as he spends the rest of his days in darkness, mourning, many sorrows, sickness and exasperation.

17. केवल इसके कि उस ने जीवन भर बेचैनी से भोजन किया, और बहुत ही दु:खित और रोगी रहा और क्रोध भी करता रहा?

17. So my conclusion is this: true happiness lies in eating and drinking and enjoying whatever has been achieved under the sun, throughout the life given by God: for this is the lot of humanity.

18. सुन, जो भली बात मैं ने देखी है, वरन जो उचित है, वह यह कि मनुष्य खाए और पीए और अपने परिश्रम से जो वह धरती पर रिता है, अपनी सारी आयु भर जो परमेश्वर ने उसे दी है, सुखी रहे: क्योंकि उसका भाग यही है।

18. And whenever God gives someone riches and property, with the ability to enjoy them and to find contentment in work, this is a gift from God.

19. वरन हर एक मनुष्य जिसे परमेश्वर ने धन सम्पत्ति दी हो, और उन से आनन्द भोगने और उस में से अपना भाग लेने और परिश्रम करते हुए आनन्द करने को शक्ति भी दी हो- यह परमेश्वर का वरदान है।

19. For such a person will hardly notice the passing of time, so long as God keeps his heart occupied with joy.
