1. अपनी रोटी जल के ऊपर डाल दे, क्योंकि बहुत दिन के बाद तू उसे फिर पाएगा।

1. CAST YOUR bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days.

2. सात वरन आठ जनों को भी भाग दे, क्योंकि तू नहीं जानता कि पृथ्वी पर क्या विपत्ति आ पड़ेगी।

2. Give a portion to seven, yes, even [divide it] to eight, for you know not what evil may come upon the earth.

3. यदि बादल जल भरे हैं, तब उसका भूमि पर उण्डेल देते हैं; और वृक्ष चाहे दक्खिन की ओर गिरे या उत्तर की ओर, तौभी जिस स्थान पर वृक्ष गिरेगा, वहीं पड़ा रहेगा।

3. If the clouds are full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth; and if a tree falls toward the south or toward the north, in the place where the tree falls, there it will lie.

4. जो वायु को ताकता रहेगा वह बीज बोने न पाएगा; और जो बादलों को देखता रहेगा वह लवने न पाएगा।

4. He who observes the wind [and waits for all conditions to be favorable] will not sow, and he who regards the clouds will not reap.

5. जैसे तू वायु के चलने का मार्ग नहीं जानता और किस रीति से गर्भवती के पेट में हडि्डयां बढ़ती हैं, वैसे ही तू परमेश्वर का काम नहीं जानता जो सब कुछ करता है।।

5. As you know not what is the way of the wind, or how the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a pregnant woman, even so you know not the work of God, Who does all.

6. भोर को अपना बीज बो, और सांझ को भी अपना हाथ न रोक; क्योंकि तू नहीं जानता कि कौन सुफल होगा, यह वा वह वा दोनों के दोनों अच्छे निकलेंगे।

6. In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening withhold not your hands, for you know not which shall prosper, whether this or that, or whether both alike will be good.

7. उजियाला मनभावना होता है, और धूप के देखने से आंखों को सुख होता है।

7. Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun.

8. यदि मनुष्य बहुत वर्ष जीवित रहे, तो उन सभों में आनन्दित रहे; परन्तु यह स्मरण रखे कि अन्धियारे से दिन भी बहुत होंगे। जो कुछ होता है वह व्यर्थ है।।

8. Yes, if a man should live many years, let him rejoice in them all; yet let him [seriously] remember the days of darkness, for they will be many. All that comes is vanity (emptiness, falsity, vainglory, and futility)!

9. हे जवान, अपनी जवानी में आनन्द कर, और अपनी जवानी के दिनों के मगन रह; अपनी मनमानी कर और अपनी आंखों की दृष्टि के अनुसार चल। परन्तु यह जान रख कि इन सब बातों के विषय में परमेश्वर तेरा न्याय करेगा।।

9. Rejoice, O young man, in your adolescence, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your [full-grown] youth. And walk in the ways of your heart and in the sight of your eyes, but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.

10. अपने मन से खेद और अपनी देह से दु:ख दूर कर, क्योंकि लड़कपन और जवानी दोनो व्यर्थ है।

10. Therefore remove [the lusts that end in] sorrow and vexation from your heart and mind and put away evil from your body, for youth and the dawn of life are vanity [transitory, idle, empty, and devoid of truth]. [II Cor. 7:1; II Tim. 2:22.]
