1. क्या मनुष्य को पृथ्वी पर कठिन सेवा करनी नहीं पड़ती? क्या उसके दिन मजदूर के से नहीं होते?

1. Is not the life off ma vpon earth a very batayll? Are not his dayes, like the dayes of an hyred seruaunte?

2. जैसा कोई दास छाया की अभिलाषा करे, वा मजदूर अपनी मजदूरी की आशा रखे;

2. For like as a bonde seruaunt desyreth the shadowe, and as an hyrelinge wolde fayne haue an ende of his worke:

3. वैसा ही मैं अनर्थ के महीनों का स्वामी बनाया गया हूँ, और मेरे लिये क्लेश से भरी रातें ठहराई गई हैं।

3. Euen so haue I laboured whole monethes longe (but in vayne) and many a carefull night haue I tolde.

4. जब मैं लेट लाता, तब कहता हूँ, मैं कब उठूंगा? और रात कब बीतेगी? और पौ फटने तक छटपटाते छटपटाते उकता जाता हूँ।

4. When I layed me downe to slepe, I sayde: O when shal I ryse? Agayne, I longed sore for the night. Thus am I full off sorowe, till it be darcke.

5. मेरी देह कीड़ों और और मिट्टी के ढेलों से ढकी हुई है; मेरा चमड़ा सिमट जाता, और फिर गल जाता है।

5. My flesh is clothed with wormes, fylthinesse and dust: my skynne is wythered, and crompled together:

6. मेरे दिन जुलाहे की धड़की से अधिक फुत से चलनेवाले हैं और निराशा में बीते जाते हैं।

6. my dayes passe ouer more spedely, the a weeuer can weeue out his webbe, and are gone, or I am awarre.

7. याद कर कि मेरा जीवन वायु ही है; और मैं अपनी आंखों से कल्याण फिर न देखूंगा।

7. O remembre, that my life is but a wynde, ad that myne eye shal nomore se the pleasures

8. जो मुझे अब देखता है उसे मैं फिर दिखाई न दूंगा; तेरी आंखें मेरी ओर होंगी परन्तु मैं न मिलूंगा।

8. therof yee and that none other mans eye shall se me eny more. For yf thou fasten thine eyes vpon me, I come to naught like

9. जैसे बादल छटकर लोप हो जाता है, वैसे ही अधोलोक में उतरनेवाला फिर वहां से नहीं लौट सकता;

9. as a cloude is cosumed and vanyshed awaye, euen so he that goeth downe to hell, commeth nomore vp,

10. वह अपने घर को फिर लौट न आएगा, और न अपने स्थान में फिर मिलेगा।

10. ner turneth agayne in to his house, nether shall his place knowe him eny more.

11. इसलिये मैं अपना मुंह बन्द न रखूंगा; अपने मन का खेद खोलकर कहूंगा; और अपने जीव की कड़ुवाहट के कारण कुड़कुड़ाता रहूंगा।

11. Therfore I will not spare my mouth, but will speake in the trouble of my sprete, in ye bytternesse of my mynde will I talke.

12. क्या मैं समुद्र हूँ, वा मगरमच्छ हूँ, कि तू मुझ पर पहरा बैठाता है?

12. Am I a see or a whalfysh, that thou kepest me so in preson?

13. जब जब मैं सोचता हूं कि मुझे खाट पर शान्ति मिलेगी, और बिछौने पर मेरा खेद कुछ हलका होगा;

13. When I thynke: my bedd shall comforte me, I shall haue some refresshinge by talkynge with myself vpon my couche:

14. तब तब तू मुझे स्वप्नों से घबरा देता, और दर्शनों से भयभीत कर देता है;

14. The troublest thou me with dreames, ad makest me so afrayed thorow visions,

15. यहां तक कि मेरा जी फांसी को, और जीवन से मृत्यु को अधिक चाहता है।

15. that my soule wyssheth rather to be hanged, and my bones to be deed.

16. मुझे अपने जीवन से घृणा आती है; मैं सर्वदा जीवित रहना नहीं चाहता। मेरा जीवनकाल सांस सा है, इसलिये मुझे छोड़ दे।

16. I can se no remedy, I shall lyue nomore: O spare me then, for my dayes are but vayne

17. मनुष्य क्या है, कि तू उसे महत्व दे, और अपना मन उस पर लगाए,

17. What is man, that thou hast him in soch reputacion, and settest so moch by him?

18. और प्रति भोर को उसकी सुधि ले, और प्रति क्षण उसे जांचता रहे?

18. Thou takest diligent care for him, and sodely doest thou trye him.

19. तू कब तक मेरी ओर आंख लगाए रहेगा, और इतनी देर के लिये भी मुझे न छोड़ेगा कि मैं अपना थूक निगल लूं?

19. Why goest thou not fro me, ner lettest me alone, so longe till I swalow downe my spetle?

20. हे मनुष्यों के ताकनेवाले, मैं ने पाप तो किया होगा, तो मैं ने तेरा क्या बिगाड़ा? तू ने क्यों मुझ को अपना निशाना बना लिया है, यहां तक कि मैं अपने ऊपर आपही बोझ हुआ हूँ?

20. I haue offended, what shal I do vnto ye, O thou preseruer off men? Why hast thou made me to stonde in thy waye, and am so heuy a burden vnto myself?

21. और तू क्यों मेरा अपराध क्षमा नहीं करता? और मेरा अधर्म क्यों दूर नहीं करता? अब तो मैं मिट्टी में सो जाऊंगा, और तू मुझे यत्न से ढूंढ़ेगा पर मेरा पता नहीं मिलेगा।

21. Why doest thou not forgeue me my synne? Wherfore takest thou not awaye my wickednesse? Beholde, now must I slepe in the dust: and yff thou sekest me tomorow in the mornynge, I shalbe gone.
