1. जब सम्बल्लत ने सुना कि यहूदी लोग शहरपनाह को बना रहे हैं, तब उस ने बुरा माना, और बहुत रिसियाकर यहूदियों को ठट्ठों में उड़ाने लगा।

1. But it came to pass that when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was wroth and felt great indignation and mocked the Jews.

2. वह अपने भाइयों के और शोमरोन की सेना के साम्हने यों कहने लगा, वे निर्बल यहूदी क्या किया चाहते हैं? क्या वे वह काम अपने बल से करेंगे? क्या वे अपना स्थान दृढ़ करेंगे? क्या वे यज्ञ करेंगे? क्या वे आज ही सब काम निपटा डालेंगे? क्या वे मिट्टीके ढेरों में के जले हुए पत्थ्रों को फिर नये सिरे से बनाएंगे?

2. And he spoke before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, 'What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they make sacrifice? Will they finish it in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned?'

3. उसके पास तो अम्मोनी तोबियाह था, और वह कहने लगा, जो कुछ वे बना रहे हैं, यदि कोई गीदड़ भी उस पर चढ़े, तो वह उनकी बनाई हुई पत्थर की शहरपनाह को तोड़ देगा।

3. Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, 'Indeed that which they build, if a fox go up, even he shall break down their stone wall.'

4. हे हमारे परमेश्वर सुन ले, कि हमारा अपमान हो रहा है; और उनका किया हुआ अपमान उन्हीं के सिर पर लौटा दे, और उन्हें बन्धुआई के देश में लुटवा दे।

4. Hear, O our God, for we are despised; and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them as a prey in the land of captivity.

5. और उनका अधर्म तू न ढांप, और न उनका पाप तेरे सम्मुख से मिटाया जाए; क्योंकि उन्हों ने तुझे शहरपनाह बनानेवालों के साम्हने क्रोध दिलाया है।

5. And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before Thee; for they have provoked Thee to anger before the builders.

6. और हम लोगों ने शहरपनाह को बनाया; और सारी शहरपनाह आधी ऊंचाई तक जुड़ गई। क्योंकि लोगों का मन उस काम में नित लगा रहा।

6. So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto half its height, for the people had a mind to work.

7. जब सम्बल्लत और तोबियाह और अरबियों, अम्मोनियों और अशदोदियों ने सुना, कि यरूशलेम की शहरपनाह की मरम्मत होती जाती है, और उस में के नाके बन्द होने लगे हैं, तब उन्हों ने बहुत ही बुरा माना;

7. But it came to pass that when Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabians and the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that the walls of Jerusalem were being rebuilt, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,

8. और सभों ने एक मन से गोष्ठी की, कि जाकर यरूशलेम से लड़ें, और उस में गड़बड़ी डालें।

8. and conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem and to hinder it.

9. परन्तु हम लोगों ने अपने परमेश्वर से प्रार्थना की, और उनके डर के मारे उनके विरूद्ध दिन रात के पहरूए ठहरा दिए।

9. Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

10. और यहूदी कहने लगे, ढोनेवालों का बल घट गया, और मिट्टी बहुत पड़ी है, इसलिये शहरपनाह हम से नहीं बन सकती।

10. And Judah said, 'The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish, so that we are not able to build the wall.'

11. और हमारे शत्रु कहने लगे, कि जब तक हम उनके बीच में न महुंचे, और उन्हें घात करके वह काम बन्द न करें, तब तक उनको न कुछ मालूम होगा, और न कुछ दिखाई पड़ेगा।

11. And our adversaries said, 'They shall not know, neither see, until we come in the midst among them and slay them and cause the work to cease.'

12. फिर जो यहूदी उनके आस पास रहते थे, उन्हों ने सब स्थानों से दस बार आ आकर, हम लोगों से कहा, तुम को हमारे पास लौट आना चाहिये।

12. And it came to pass that when the Jews who dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, 'From all places whence ye shall return unto us, they will be upon you.'

13. इस कारण मैं ने लोगों को तलवारें, बर्छियां और धनुष देकर शहरपनाह के पीछे सब से नीचे के खुले स्थानों में घराने घराने के अनुसार बैठा दिया।

13. Therefore set I men in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places; I even set the people by families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

14. तब मैं देखकर उठा, और रईसों और हाकिमों और और सब लोगों से कहा, उन से मत डरो; प्रभु जो महान और भययोग्य है, उसी को स्मरण करके, अपने भाइयों, बेटों, बेटियों, स्त्रियों और घरों के लिये युठ्ठ करना।

14. And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles and to the rulers and to the rest of the people, 'Be not ye afraid of them; remember the Lord, who is great and fearsome, and fight for your brethren, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your houses.'

15. जब हमारे शत्रुओं ने सुना, कि यह बात हम को मालूम हो गई है और परमेश्वर ने उनकी युक्ति निष्फल की है, तब हम सब के सब शहरपनाह के पास अपने अपने काम पर लौट गए।

15. And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.

16. और उस दिन से मेरे आधे सेवक तो उस काम मे लगे रहे और आधे बर्छियों, तलवारों, धनुषों और झिलमों को धारण किए रहते थे; और यहूदा के सारे धराने के पीछे हाकिम रहा करते थे।

16. And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields and the bows and the jackets of mail; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.

17. शहरपनाह के बनानेवाले और बोझ के ढोनेवाले दोनों भार उठाते थे, अर्थत् एक हाथ से काम करते थे और दूसरे हाथ से हथियार पकड़े रहते थे।

17. Those who built on the wall and those who bore burdens with those who loaded -- every one with one of his hands wrought in the work and with the other hand held a weapon.

18. और राज अपनी अपनी जांघ पर तलवार लटकाए हुए बनाते थे। और नरसिंगे का फूंकनेवाला मेरे पास रहता था।

18. For the builders, every one, had his sword girded by his side, and so built. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.

19. इसलिये मैं ने रईसों, हाकिमों और सब लोगों से कहा, काम तो बड़ा और फैला हुआ है, और हम लोग शहरपनाह पर अलग अलग एक दूसरे से दूर रहते हैं।

19. And I said unto the nobles and to the rulers and to the rest of the people, 'The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.

20. इसलिये जिधर से नरसिंगा तुम्हें सुनाई दे, उधर ही हमारे पास इकट्ठे हो जाना। हमारा परमेश्वर हमारी ओर से लड़ेगा।

20. In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us. Our God shall fight for us.'

21. यों हम काम में लगे रहे, और उन में आधे, पौ फटने से तारों के निकलने तक बर्छियां लिये रहते थे।

21. So we labored in the work; and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning until the stars appeared.

22. फिर उसी समय मैं ने लोगों से यह भी कहा, कि एक एक मनुष्य अपने दास समेत यरूशलेम के भीतर रात बिताया करे, कि वे रात को तो हमारी रखवाली करें, और दिन को काम में लगे रहें।

22. Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, 'Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labor in the day.'

23. और न तो मैं अपने कपड़े उतारता था, और न मेरे भाई, न मेरे सेवक, न वे पहरूए जो मेरे अनुचर थे, अपने कपड़े उतारते थे; सब कोई पानी के पास हथियार लिये हुए जागते थे।

23. So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us, put off our clothes, except that every one put them off for washing.
