1. जब यहूदा और बिन्यामीन के शत्रुओं ने यह सुना कि बन्धुआई से छूटे हुए लोग इस्राएल के परमेश्वर यहोवा के लिये मन्दिर बना रहे हैं,

1. Many people living in the area were against the people of Judah and Benjamin. These enemies heard that the people who had come from captivity were building a temple for the Lord, the God of Israel. So they came to Zerubbabel and to the family leaders and said, 'Let us help you build. We are the same as you, we ask your God for help. We have offered sacrifices to your God since the time King Esarhaddon of Assyria brought us here.'

2. तब वे जरूब्बाबेल और पूर्वजों के घरानों के मुख्य मुख्य पुरूषों के पास आकर उन से कहने लगे, हमें भी अपने संग बनाने दो; क्योंकि तुम्हारी नाई हम भी तुम्हारे परमेश्वर की खोज में लगे हुए हैं, और अश्शूर का राजा एसर्हद्दॊन जिस ने हमें यहां पहुंचाया, उसके दिनों से हम उसी को बलि चढ़ाते भी हैं।

3. जरूब्बाबेल, येशू और इस्राएल के पितरों के घरानों के मुख्य पुरूषों ने उन से कहा, हमारे परमेश्वर के लिये भवन बनाने में तुम को हम से कुछ काम नहीं; हम ही लोग एक संग मिलकर फारस के राजा कुस्रू की आज्ञा के अनुसार इस्राएल के परमेश्वर यहोवा के लिये उसे बनाएंगे।

3. But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the other family leaders of Israel answered, 'No, you people cannot help us build a temple for our God. Only we can build the Temple for the Lord. He is the God of Israel. This is what King Cyrus of Persia commanded us to do.'

4. तब उस देश के लोग यहूदियों के हाथ ढीला करने और उन्हें डराकर मन्दिर बनाने में रूकावट डालने लगे।

4. So the enemies began to discourage them and tried to frighten them in order to stop them from building the Temple.

5. और फारस के राजा कुस्रू के जीवन भर वरन फारस के राजा द्वारा के राज्य के समय तक उनके मनोरथ को निष्फल करने के लिये वकीलों को रूपया देते रहे।

5. These enemies hired government officials to work against the people of Judah. The officials constantly did things to stop the Jews' plans to build the Temple. This continued the whole time that Cyrus was the king until Darius became the king of Persia.

6. श्रायर्ष के राज्य के पहिले दिनों में उन्हों ने यहूदा और यरूशलेम के निवासियों का दोषपत्रा उसे लिख भेजा।

6. These enemies even wrote letters to the king of Persia trying to stop the Jews. They wrote a letter the year that Xerxes became the king of Persia.

7. फिर अर्तश्रत्रा के दिनों में बिशलाम, मिथदात और ताबेल ने और उसके सहचरियों ने फारस के राजा अर्तश्रत्रा को चिट्ठी लिखी, और चिट्ठी अरामी अश्ररों और अरामी भाषा में लिखी गई।

7. Later, when Artaxerxes became the new king of Persia, some of these men wrote another letter complaining about the Jews. The men who wrote the letter were Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the other people in their group. The letter was written in Aramaic and translated.

8. अर्थात् रहूम राजमंत्री और शिलशै मंत्री ने यरूशलेम के विरूद्ध राजा अर्तश्रत्रा को इस आशय की चिट्ठी लिखी।

8. Then Rehum the commanding officer and Shimshai the secretary wrote a letter against the people of Jerusalem. They wrote the letter to Artaxerxes the king. This is what they wrote:

9. उस समय रहूम राजमंत्री और शिमशै मंत्री और उनके और सहचरियों ने , अर्थात् दीनी, अपर्सतकी, तर्पली, अफ़ारसी, एरेकी, बाबेली, शूशनी, देहवी, एलामी,

9. From Rehum the commanding officer and Shimshai the secretary, and from the judges and important officials over the men from Tripolis, Persia, Erech, and Babylon, and from the Elamites from Susa,

10. आदि जातियों ने जिन्हें महान और प्रधान ओस्नप्पर ने पार ले आकर शोमरोन नगर में और महानद के इस पार के शेष देश में बसाया था, एक चिट्ठी लिखी।

10. and from the other people who the great and powerful Ashurbanipal moved to the city of Samaria and other places in the country west of the Euphrates River.

11. जो चिट्ठी उन्हों ने अर्तश्रत्रा राजा को लिखी, उसकी यह नकल है--- तेरे दास जो महानद के पार के मनुष्य हैं, इत्यादि।

11. This is the copy of the letter sent to King Artaxerxes: From your servants living in the area west of the Euphrates River.

12. राजा को यह विदित हो, कि जो यहूदी तेरे पास से चले आए, वे हमारे पास यरूशलेम को पहुंचे हैं। वे उस दंगैत और घिनौने नगर को बसा रहे हैं; वरन उसकी शहरपनाह को खड़ा कर चुके हैं और उसकी नेव को जोड़ चुके हैं।

12. King Artaxerxes, we wish to inform you that the Jews you sent from there are now in Jerusalem. They are trying to rebuild that terrible city. The people there have always rebelled against other kings. Now they have almost finished repairing the foundations and building the walls.

13. अब राजा को विदित हो कि यदि वह नगर बस गया और उसकी शहरपनाह बन चुकी, तब तो वे लोग कर, चुंगी और राहदारी फिर न देंगे, और अन्त में राजाओं की हानि होगी।

13. Also, King Artaxerxes, you should know that if Jerusalem and its walls are rebuilt, the people of Jerusalem will stop paying their taxes. They will stop sending money to honor you. They also will stop paying customs fees, and the king will lose all that money.

14. हम लोग तो राजमन्दिर का नमक खाते हैं और उचित नहीं कि राजा का अनादर हमारे देखते हो, इस कारण हम यह चिट्ठी भेजकर राजा को चिता देते हैं।

14. We have a responsibility to the king. We don't want to see this happen, so we are sending this letter to inform the king.

15. तेरे पुरखाओं के इतिहास की पुस्तक में खोज की जाए; तब इतिहास की पुस्तक में तू यह पाकर जान लेगा कि वह नगर बलवा करनेवाला और राजाओं और प्रान्तों की हानि करनेवाला है, और प्राचीन काल से उस में बलवा मचता आया है। और इसी कारण वह नगर नष्ट भी किया गया था।

15. King Artaxerxes, we suggest that you search the writings of the kings who ruled before you. You will see in the writings that Jerusalem always rebelled against other kings. It has caused much trouble for other kings and nations. Many rebellions have started in this city since ancient times. That is why Jerusalem was destroyed.

16. हम राजा को निश्चय करा देते हैं कि यदि वह नगर बसाया जाए और उसकी शहरपनाह बन चुके, तब इसके कारण महानद के इस पार तेरा कोई भाग न रह जाएगा।

16. King Artaxerxes, we wish to inform you that if this city and its walls are rebuilt, you will lose control of the area west of the Euphrates River.

17. तब राजा ने रहूम राजमंत्री और शिमशै मंत्री और शोमरोन और महानद के इस पार रहनेवाले उनके और सहचरियों के पास यह उत्तर भेजा, कुशल, इत्यादि।

17. Then King Artaxerxes sent this answer: To Rehum the commanding officer, Shimshai the secretary, and all the people with them living in Samaria and other places west of the Euphrates River. Greetings:

18. जो चिट्ठी तुम लोगों ने हमारे पास भेजी वह मेरे साम्हने पढ़ कर साफ साफ सुनाई गई।

18. The letter you sent us has been translated and read to me.

19. और मेरी आज्ञा से खोज किये जाने पर जान पड़ा है, कि वह नगर प्राचीनकाल से राजाओं के विरूद्ध सिर उठाता आया है और उसमें दंगा और बलवा होता आया है।

19. I gave an order for the writings of the kings before me to be searched. The writings were read, and we found out that Jerusalem has a long history of rebellion against kings. Jerusalem has been a place where rebellion and revolt has happened often.

20. यरूशलेम के सामथ राजा भी हुए जो महानद के पार से समस्त देश पर राज्य करते थे, और कर, चुंगी और राहदारी उनको दी जाती थी।

20. Jerusalem has had powerful kings ruling over it and over the whole area west of the Euphrates River. Their kings received taxes, customs, fees, and tribute.

21. इसलिये अब इस आज्ञा का प्रचार कर कि वे मनुष्य रोके जाएं और जब तक मेरी ओर से आज्ञा न मिले, तब तक वह नगर बनाया न जाए।

21. Now, you must give an order for these men to stop work. That order must be given to keep Jerusalem from being rebuilt until I say so.

22. और चौकस रहो, कि इस बात में ढीले न होना; राजाओं की हानि करनेवाली वह बुराई क्यों बढ़ने पाए?

22. Be careful not to overlook this matter. We should not let the building of Jerusalem continue. If that work continues, I will not get any more money from Jerusalem.

23. जब राजा अर्तश्रत्रा की यह चिट्ठी रहूम और शिमशै मंत्री और उनके सहचरियों को पढ़कर सुनाई गई, तब वे उतावली करके यरूशलेम को यहूदियों के पास गए और भुजबल और बरियाई से उनको रोक दिया।

23. So a copy of the letter that King Artaxerxes sent was read to Rehum, Shimshai the secretary, and the people with them. They went very quickly to the Jews in Jerusalem and forced them to stop building.

24. तब परमेश्वर के भवन का काम जो यरूशलेम में है, रूक गया; और फारस के राजा दारा के राज्य के दूसरे वर्ष तक रूका रहा।

24. So the work stopped on God's Temple in Jerusalem. The work did not continue until the second year that Darius was king of Persia.
