1. यह सुनकर हित्ती, एमोरी, कनानी, परिज्जी, हिव्वी, और यबूसी, जितने राजा यरदन के इस पार पहाड़ी देश में और नीचे के देश में, और लबानोन के साम्हने के महानगर के तट पर रहते थे,

1. And it came to pass, when they heard, namely, all the kings who were over the Jordan, in the hill country and in the lowland, and in all the coast of the great sea, over against the Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite;

2. वे एक मन होकर यहोशू और इस्राएलियों से लड़ने को इकट्ठे हुए।।

2. then gathered they themselves together as one man, to fight with Joshua, and with Israel, with one accord.

3. जब गिबोन के निवासियों ने सुना कि यहोशू ने यरीहो और ऐ से क्या क्या किया है,

3. Now, the inhabitants of Gibeon, heard that which Joshua had done unto Jericho and unto Ai;

4. तब उन्हों ने छल किया, और राजदूतों का भेष बनाकर अपने गदहों पर पुराने बोरे, और पुराने फटे, और जोड़े हुए मदिरा के कुप्पे लादकर

4. they, however, acted craftily, and went and started, and took old sacks for their asses, and leathern wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;

5. अपने पांवों में पुरानी गांठी हुई जूतियां, और तन पर पुराने वस्त्रा पहिने, और अपने भोजन के लिये सूखी और फफूंदी लगी हुई रोटी ले ली।

5. and sandals, old and patched, upon their feet, and worn-out mantles upon them, and, all the bread of their provision, was dry and broken.

6. तब वे गिलगाल की छावनी में यहोशू के पास जाकर उस से और इस्राएली पुरूषों से कहने लगे, हम दूर देश सें आए हैं; इसलिये अब तुम हम से वाचा बान्धो।

6. So they took their journey unto Joshua, unto the camp, at Gilgal, and said unto him, and unto the men of Israel, From a far country, are we come, Now, therefore, solemnise with us a covenant.

7. इस्राएली पुरूषों ने उन हिव्वियों से कहा, क्या जाने तुम हमारे मध्य में ही रहते हो; फिर हम तुम से वाचा कैसे बान्धे?

7. And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure, in our midst, ye are dwelling, how then can we solemnise with you a covenant?

8. उन्हों ने यहोशू से कहा, हम तेरे दास हैं। तब यहोशू ने उन से कहा, तुम कौन हो? और कहां से आए हो?

8. And they said unto Joshua: Thy servants, we are. And Joshua said unto them: Who, are ye? And, from whence, come ye?

9. उन्हों ने उस से कहा, तेरे दास बहुत दूर के देश से तेरे परमेश्वर यहोवा का नाम सुनकर आए हैं; क्योंकि हम ने यह सब सुना है, अर्थात् उसकी कीर्ति और जो कुछ उस ने मि में किया,

9. And they said unto him From a very far country, have thy servants come, because of the name of Yahweh thy God, because we had heard his fame, and all that he had done in Egypt;

10. और जो कुछ उस ने एमोरियों के दोनों राजाओं से किया जो यरदन के उस पार रहते थे, अर्थात् हेश्बोन के राजा सीहोन से, और बाशान के राजा ओग से जो अश्तारोत में था।

10. and all that he had done unto the two kings of the Amorites who were over the Jordan, unto Sihon, king of Heshbon, and unto Og, king of Bashan, who was in Ashtaroth.

11. इसलिये हमारे यहां के वृद्धलोगों ने और हमारे देश के सब निवासियों ने हम से कहा, कि मार्ग के लिये अपने साथ भोजनवस्तु लेकर उन से मिलने को जाओ, और उन से कहना, कि हम तुम्हारे दास हैं; इसलिये अब तुम हम से वाचा बान्धो।

11. So our elders and all the inhabitants of our land spake unto us, saying Take ye, in your hand, provision for the journey, and go your way to meet them, then shall ye say unto them, Your servants, we are. Now, therefore, solemnise with us a covenant.

12. जिस दिन हम तुम्हारे पास चलने को निकले उस दिन तो हम ने अपने अपने घर से यह रोटी गरम और ताजी ली थी; परन्तु अब देखो, यह सूख गई है और इस में फफूंदी लग गई है।

12. This our bread, took we, hot, for our provision, out of our houses, on the day we came forth to journey unto you, but, now, lo! it is dry, yea it is broken;

13. फिर ये जो मदिरा के कुप्पे हम ने भर लिये थे, तब तो नये थे, परन्तु देखो अब ये फट गए हैं; और हमारे ये वस्त्रा और जूतियां बड़ी लम्बी यात्रा के कारण पुरानी हो गई हैं।

13. and, these leathern wine bottles, which we filled new, lo! also, they are rent, and, as for these our mantles and our sandals, they are worn out, by reason of the very long journey.

14. तब उन पुरूषों ने यहोवा से बिना सलाह लिये उनके भोजन में से कुछ ग्रहण किया।

14. So the men took of their provision, but, the bidding of Yahweh, had they not asked.

15. तब यहोशू ने उन से मेल करके उन से यह वाचा बान्धी, कि तुम को जीवित छोड़ेंगे; और मण्डली के प्रधानों ने उन से शपथ खाई।

15. And Joshua made peace with them, and solemnised with them a covenant to let them live, and the princes of the assembly, entered into an oath with them.

16. और उनके साथ वाचा बान्धने के तीन दिन के बाद उनको यह समाचार मिला; कि वे हमारे पड़ोस के रहनेवाले लोग हैं, और हमारे ही मध्य में बसे हैं।

16. And it came to pass, at the end of three days after they had solemnised with them a covenant, that they heard that, near neighbours, they were unto them, and, in their midst, they were dwelling.

17. तब इस्राएली कूच करके तीसरे दिन उनके नगरों को जिनके नाम गिबोन, कपीरा, बेरोत, और किर्यत्यारीम है पहुंच गए,

17. So the sons of Israel brake up, and came in unto their cities on the third day, their cities, being Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.

18. और इस्राएलियों ने उनको न मारा, क्योंकि मण्डली के प्रधानों ने उनके संग इस्राएल के परमेश्वर यहोवा की शपथ खाई थी। तब सारी मण्डली के लोग प्रधानों के विरूद्ध कुड़कुड़ाने लगे।

18. And the sons of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the assembly had sworn unto them by Yahweh, God of Israel, but all the assembly murmured against the princes.

19. तब सब प्रधानों ने सारी मण्डली से कहा, हम ने उन से इस्राएल के परमेश्वर यहोवा की शपथ खाई है, इसलिये अब उनको छू नहीं सकते।

19. And all the princes said unto all the assembly, We, have sworn unto them, by Yahweh, God of Israel, now, therefore, we may not touch them.

20. हम उन से यही करेंगे, कि उस शपथ के अनुसार हम उनको जीवित छोड़ देंगे, नहीं तो हमारी खाई हुई शपथ के कारण हम पर क्रोध पड़ेगां

20. This, will we do unto them, even let them live, lest there come on us wrath, because of the oath which we have sworn unto them.

21. फिर प्रधानों ने उन से कहा, वे जीवित छोड़े जाएं। सो प्रधानों के इस वचन के अनुसार वे सारी मण्डली के लिये लकड़हारे और पानी भरनेवाले बने।

21. And the princes said unto them Let them live. So they became hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the assembly, as the princes spake unto them.

22. फिर यहोशू ने उनको बुलवाकर कहा, तुम तो हमारे ही बीच में रहते हो, फिर तुम ने हम से यह कहकर क्यों छल किया है, कि हम तुम से बहुत दूर रहते हैं?

22. And Joshua called for them, and spake unto them, saying, Wherefore did ye deceive us, saying We are, very far, from you, whereas, ye, in our midst, are dwelling?

23. इसलिये अब तुम शापित हो, और तुम में से ऐसा कोई न रहेगा जो दास, अर्थात् मेरे परमेश्वर के भवन के लिये लकड़हारा और पानी भरनेवाला न हो।

23. Now, therefore, accursed, ye are, and ye shall not cease to be in bond-service as hewers of wood and drawers of water, for the house of my God.

24. उन्हों ने यहोशू को उत्तर दिया, तेरे दासों को यह निश्चय बतलाया गया था, कि तेरे परमेश्वर यहोवा ने अपने दास मूसा को आज्ञा दी थी कि तुम को वह सारा देश दे, और उसके सारे निवासियों को तुम्हारे साम्हने से सर्वनाश करे; इसलिये हम लोगों को तुम्हारे कारण से अपने प्राणों के लाले पड़ गए, इसलिये हम ने ऐसा काम किया ।

24. And they responded to Joshua, and said Because it was, plainly told, thy servants, how that Yahweh thy God had commanded Moses his servant to give unto you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore feared we greatly, for our lives, because of you, and did this thing.

25. और अब हम तेरे वश में हैं, जैसा बर्ताव तुझे भला लगे और ठीक जान पड़े, वैसा ही व्यवहार हमारे साथ कर।

25. Now, therefore, here we are, in thy hand, as may be good and right in thine eyes, to do unto us, do.

26. तब उस ने उन से वैसा ही किया, और उन्हें इस्राएलियों के हाथ से ऐसा बचाया, कि वे उन्हें घात करने न पाए।

26. And he did to them so, and rescued them out of the hand of the sons of Israel, and they slew them not.

27. परन्तु यहोशू ने उसी दिन उनको मण्डली के लिये, और जो स्थान यहोवा चुन ले उसमें उसकी वेदी के लिये, लकड़हारे और पानी भरनेवाले नियुक्त कर दिया, जैसा आज तक है।।

27. And Joshua appointed them that day to be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto the assembly, and unto the altar of Yahweh, as they are until this day, in the place which he should choose.
