1. जो नगरी लोगों से भरपूर थी वह अब कैसी अकेली बैठी हुई है ! वह क्यों एक विधवा के समान बन गई? वह जो जातियों की दृष्टि में महान और प्रान्तों में रानी थी, अब क्यों कर देनेवाली हो गई है।

1. HOW SOLITARY and lonely sits the city [Jerusalem] that was [once] full of people! How like a widow has she become! She who was great among the nations and princess among the provinces has become a tributary [in servitude]!

2. रात को वह फूट फूट कर रोती है, उसके आंसू गालों पर ढलकते हैं; उसके सब यारों में से अब कोई उसे शान्ति नहीं देता; उसके सब मित्रों ने उस से विश्वासघात किया, और उसके शत्रु बन गए हैं।

2. She weeps bitterly in the night, and her tears are [constantly] on her cheeks. Among all her lovers (allies) she has no one to comfort her. All her friends have dealt treacherously with her; they have become her enemies. [Jer. 3:1; 4:30.]

3. यहूदा दु:ख और कठिन दासत्व से बचने के लिये परदेश चली गई; परन्तु अन्यजातियों में रहती हुई वह चैन नहीं पाती; उसके सब खदेड़नेवालों ने उसकी सकेती में उसे पकड़ लिया है।

3. Judah has gone into exile [to escape] from the affliction and laborious servitude [of the homeland]. She dwells among the [heathen] nations, but she finds no rest; all her persecutors overtook her amid the [dire] straits [of her distress].

4. सिरयोन के मार्ग विलाप कर रहे हैं, क्योंकि नियत पव में कोई नहीं आता है; उसके सब फाटक सुनसान पड़े हैं, उसके याजक कराहते हैं; उसकी कुमारियां शोकित हैं, और वह आप कठिन दु:ख भोग रही है।

4. The roads to Zion mourn, because no one comes to the solemn assembly or the appointed feasts. All her gates are desolate, her priests sigh and groan, her maidens are grieved and vexed, and she herself is in bitterness.

5. उसके द्रोही प्रधान हो गए, उसके शत्रु उन्नति कर रहे हैं, क्योंकि यहोवा ने उसके बहुत से अपराधों के कारण उसे दु:ख दिया है; उसके बालबच्चों को शत्रु हांक हांक कर बंधुआई में ले गए।

5. Her adversaries have become the head; her enemies prosper. For the Lord has afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions; her young children have gone into captivity before the enemy. [Jer. 30:14, 15; 52:28; Dan. 9:7-14.]

6. सिरयोन की पुत्री का सारा प्रताप जाता रहा है। उसके हाकिम ऐसे हरिणों के समान हो गए हैं जो कुछ चराई नहीं पाते; वे खदेड़नेवालों के साम्हने से बलहीन होकर भागते हैं।

6. From the Daughter of Zion all her beauty and majesty have departed. Her princes have become like harts that find no pasture; they have fled without strength before the pursuer.

7. यरूशलेम ने, इन देख भरे और संकट के दिनों में, जब उसके लोग द्रोहियों के हाथ में पड़े और उसका कोई यहायक न रहा, तब अपनी सब मनभावनी वस्तुओं को जो प्राचीनकाल से उसकी थीं, स्मरण किया है। उसके द्रोहियों ने उसको उजड़ा देखकर ठट्ठों में उड़ाया है।

7. Jerusalem [earnestly] remembers in the days of her affliction, in the days of her [compulsory] wanderings and her bitterness, all the pleasant and precious things that she had from the days of old. When her people fell into and at the hands of the adversary, and there was none to help her, the enemy [gloated as they] looked at her, and they mocked at her desolations and downfall.

8. यरूशलेम ने बड़ा पाप किया, इसलिये वह अशुठ्ठ स्त्री सी हो गई है; जितने उसका आदर करते थे वे उसका निरादर करते हैं, क्योंकि उन्हों ने उसकी नंगाई देखी है; हां, वह कराहती हुई मुंह फेर लेती है।

8. Jerusalem has grievously sinned; therefore she has become an unclean thing and has been removed. All who honored her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness; yes, she herself groans and sighs and turns [her face] away.

9. उसकी अशुठ्ठता उसके वस्त्रा पर है; उस ने अपने अन्त का स्मरण न रखा; इसलिये वह भयंकर रीति से गिराई गई, और कोई उसे शान्ति नइीं देता है। हे यहोवा, मेरे दु:ख पर दृष्टि कर, क्योंकि शत्रु मेरे विरूद्ध सफल हुआ है !

9. Her filthiness was in and on her skirts; she did not [seriously and earnestly] consider her final end. Therefore she has come down [from throne to slavery] singularly and astonishingly; she has no comforter. O Lord [cries Jerusalem], look at my affliction, for the enemy has magnified himself [in triumph]!

10. द्रोहियों ने उसकी सब मनभावनी वस्तुओं पर हाथ बढ़ाया है; हां, अन्यजातियों को, जिनके विषय में तू ने आज्ञा दी थी कि वे तेरी सभा में भागी न होने पाएंगी, उनको उस ने तेरे पवित्रास्थान में घुसा हुआ देखा है।

10. The adversary has spread out his hand upon all her precious and desirable things; for she has seen the nations enter her sanctuary [of the temple]--when You commanded that they should not even enter Your congregation [in the outer courts]. [Deut. 23:3; Jer. 51:51; Ezek. 44:7, 9.]

11. उसके सब निवासी कराहते हुए भोजनवस्तु ढूंढ़ रहे हैं; उन्हों ने अपना प्राण बचान के लिऐ अपनी मनभावनी वस्तुएं बेचकर भोजन मोल लिया है। हे यहोवा, दृष्टि कर, और ध्यान से देख, क्योंकि मैं तुच्छ हो गई हूँ।

11. All her people groan and sigh, seeking for bread; they have given their desirable and precious things [in exchange] for food to revive their strength and bring back life. See, O Lord, and consider how wretched and lightly esteemed, how vile and abominable, I have become!

12. हे सब बटोहियो, क्या तुम्हें इस बात की कुछ भी चिन्ता नहीं? दृष्टि करके देखो, क्या मेरे दु:ख से बढ़कर कोई और पीड़ा है जो यहोवा ने अपने क्रोध के दिन मुझ पर डाल दी है?

12. Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow which was dealt out to me, with which the Lord has afflicted me in the day of His fierce anger!

14. उस ने जूए की रस्सियों की नाई मेरे अपराधों को अपने हाथ से कसा है; उस ने उन्हें बटकर मेरी गर्दन पर चढ़ाया, और मेरा बल घटा दिया है; जिनका मैं साम्हना भी नहीं कर सकती, उन्हीं के वश में यहोवा ने मुझे कर दिया है।

14. The yoke of my transgressions is bound by His hand; they were twined together; they were set upon my neck. He has made my strength fail and [me to] stumble; the Lord has delivered me into the hands of those I am unable to resist or withstand. [Deut. 28:48.]

15. यहोवा ने मेरे सब पराक्रमी पुरूषों को तुच्छ जाना; उस ने नियत पर्व का प्रचार करके लोगों को मेरे विरूद्ध बुलाया कि मेरे जवानों को पीस डालें; यहूदा की कुमारी कन्या को यहोवा ने मानो कोल्हू में पेरा है।

15. The Lord has made of no account all my [Jerusalem's] mighty men in the midst of me; He has proclaimed a set time against me to crush my young men. The Lord has trodden as in a winepress the Virgin Daughter of Judah.

16. इन बातों के कारण मैं रोती हूँ; मेरी आंखों से आंसू की धारा बहती रहती है; क्योंकि जिस शान्तिदाता के कारण मेरा जी हरा भरा हो जाता था, वह मुझ से दूर हो गया; मेरे लड़केबाले अकेले हो गए, क्योंकि शत्रु प्रबल हुआ है।

16. For these things I weep; my eyes overflow with tears, because a comforter, one who could refresh and restore my soul, is far from me. My children are desolate and perishing, for the enemy has prevailed. [Lam. 1:21.]

17. सिरयोन हाथ फैलाए हुए हैं, उसे कोई शान्ति नहीं देता; यहोवा ने याकूब के विषय में यह आज्ञा दी है कि उसके चारों ओर के निवासी उसके द्रोही हो जाएं; यरूशलेम उनके बीच अशुठ्ठ स्त्री के समान हो गई है।

17. Zion stretches forth her hands, but there is no comforter for her. The Lord has commanded concerning and against Jacob that his neighbors should be his adversaries; Jerusalem has become a filthy thing among them [an object of contempt].

18. यहोवा सच्चाई पर है, क्योंकि मैं ने उसकी आज्ञा का उल्लंघन किया है; हे सब लोगो, सुनो, और मेरी पीड़ा को देखो ! मेरे कुमार और कुमारियां बंधुआई में चली गई हैं।

18. The Lord is righteous (just and in the right); for I have rebelled against His commandment (His word). Hear, I pray you, all you peoples, and look at my sorrow and suffering; my maidens and my young men have gone into captivity.

19. मैं ने अपने मित्रों को पुकारा परन्तु उन्हों ने भी मुझे छोखा दिया; जब मेरे याजक और पुरनिये इसलिये भोजनवस्तु ढूंढ़ रहे थे कि खाने से उनका जी हरा हो जाए, तब नगर ही में उनके प्राण छूट गए।

19. I [Jerusalem] called to my lovers [allies], but they deceived me. My priests and my elders expired in the city while they sought food to save their lives.

20. हे यहोवा, दृष्टि कर, क्योंकि मैं संकट में हूँ, मेरी अन्तड़ियां एेंठी जाती हैं, मेरा हृदय उलट गया है, क्योंकि मैं ने बहुत बलवा किया है। वाहर तो मैं तलवार से निर्वश होती हूँ; और घर में मृत्यु विराज रही है।

20. Behold, O Lord, how distressed I am! My vital parts (emotions) are in tumult and are deeply disturbed; my heart cannot rest and is violently agitated within me, for I have grievously rebelled. Outside the house the sword bereaves, at home there is [famine, pestilence] death!

21. उन्हों ने सुना है कि मैं कराहती हूँ, परन्तु कोई मुझे शान्ति नहीं देता। मेरे सब शत्रुओं ने मेरी विपत्ति का समाचार सुना है; वे इस से हर्षित हो गए कि तू ही ने यह किया है। परन्तु जिस दिन की चर्चा तू ने प्रचार करके सुनाई है उसको तू दिखा, तब वे भी मेरे समान हो जाएंगे।

21. [My foes] have heard that I [Jerusalem] sigh and groan, that I have no comforter [in You]. All my enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad [O Lord] that You have done it. You will bring the day [of Judah's punishment] that you have foretold and proclaimed; [it involves also my foes' punishment] and they will become like me. [Isa. 14:5, 6; Jer. 30:16.]

22. उनकी सारी दुष्टता की ओर दृष्टि कर; और जैसा मेरे सारे अपराधों के कारण तू ने मुझे दण्ड दिया, वैसा ही उनको भी दण्ड दे; क्योंकि मैं बहुत ही कराहती हूँ, और मेरा हृदय रोग से निर्बल हो गया है।

22. Let all their wickedness come before You; and deal with them as You have dealt with me because of all my transgressions; for my sighs and groans are many and my heart is faint.
