1. योशिरयाह के पुत्रा यहूदा के राजा यहोयाकीम के राज्य के चौथे वर्ष में, जब नेरिरयाह का पुत्रा बारूक यिर्मयाह भविष्यद्वक्ता से भविष्यद्वाणी के ये वचन सुनकर पुस्तक में लिख चुका था,

1. The word that Jeremiah the prophet hath spoken unto Baruch son of Neriah, in his writing these words on a book from the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, saying:

2. तब उस ने उस से यह वचन कहा, कि इस्राएल का परमेश्वर यहोवा,तुझ से यों कहता है,

2. 'Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, concerning thee, O Baruch:

3. हे बारूक, तू ने कहा, हाय मुझ पर ! क्योंकि यहोवा ने मुझे दु:ख पर दु:ख दिया है; मैं कराहते कराहते थक गया और मुझे कुछ चैन नहीं मिलता।

3. 'Thou hast said, Woe to me, now, for Jehovah hath added sorrow to my pain, I have been wearied with my sighing, and rest I have not found.

4. तू यों कह, यहोवा यों कहता है, कि देख, इस सारे देश को जिसे मैं ने बनाया था, उसे मैं आप ढा दूंगा, और जिन को मैं ने रोपा था, उन्हें स्वयं उखाड़ फेंकूंगा।

4. Thus dost thou say unto him: Thus said Jehovah: Lo, that which I have built I am throwing down, and that which I have planted I am plucking up, even the whole land itself.

5. इसलिये सुन, क्या तू अपने लिये बड़ाई खोज रहा है? उसे मत खोज; क्योंकि यहोवा की यह वाणी है, कि मैं सारे मनुष्यों पर विपत्ति डालूंगा; परन्तु जहां कहीं तू जाएगा वहां मैं तेरा प्राण बचाकर तुझे जीवित रखूंगा।

5. And thou -- thou seekest for thee great things -- do not seek, for lo, I am bringing in evil on all flesh -- an affirmation of Jehovah -- and I have given to thee thy life for a spoil, in all places whither thou goest.'
