1. मनुष्य जो स्त्री से उत्मन्न होता है, वह थेड़े दिनों का और दुख से भरा रहता है।

1. Man born of woman is short-lived and full of trouble,

2. वह फूल की नाई खिलता, फिर तोड़ा जाता हे; वह छाया की रीति पर ढल जाता, और कहीं ठहरता नहीं।

2. Like a flower that springs up and fades, swift as a shadow that does not abide.

3. फिर क्या तू ऐसे पर दृष्टि लगाता है? क्या तू मुझे अपने साथ कचहरी में घसीटता है?

3. Upon such a one will you cast your eyes so as to bring him into judgment before you,

4. अशुठ्ठ वस्तु से शुठ्ठ वस्तु को कौन निकाल सकता है? कोई नहीं।

4. Can a man be found who is clean of defilement? There is none,

5. मनुष्य के दिन नियुक्त किए गए हैं, और उसके महीनों की गिनती तेरे पास लिखी है, और तू ने उसके लिये ऐसा सिवाना बान्धा है जिसे वह पार नहीं कर सकता,

5. however short his days. You know the number of his months; you have fixed the limit which he cannot pass.

6. इस कारण उस से अपना मुंह फेर ले, कि वह आराम करे, जब तक कि वह मजदूर की नाई अपना दिन पूरा न कर ले।

6. Look away from him and let him be, while, like a hireling, he completes his day.

7. वुक्ष की तो आशा रहती है, कि चाहे वह काट डाला भी जाए, तौभी फिर पनपेगा और उस से नर्म नर्म डालियां निकलती ही रहेंगी।

7. For a tree there is hope, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again and that its tender shoots will not cease.

8. चाहे उसकी जड़ भूमि में पुरानी भी हो जाए, और उसका ठूंठ मिट्टी में सूख भी जाए,

8. Even though its root grow old in the earth, and its stump die in the dust,

9. तौभी वर्षा की गन्ध पाकर वह फिर पनपेगा, और पौधे की नाई उस से शाखाएं फूटेंगी।

9. Yet at the first whiff of water it may flourish again and put forth branches like a young plant.

10. परन्तु पुरूष मर जाता, और पड़ा रहता है; जब उसका प्राण छूट गया, तब वह कहां रहा?

10. But when a man dies, all vigor leaves him; when man expires, where then is he?

11. जैसे नील नदी का जल घट जाता है, और जैसे महानद का जल सूखते सूखते सूख जाता है,

11. As when the waters of a lake fail, or a stream grows dry and parches,

12. वैसे ही मनुष्य लेट जाता और फिर नहीं उठता; जब तक आकाश बना रहेगा तब तक वह न जागेगा, और न उसकी नींद टूटेगी।

12. So men lie down and rise not again. Till the heavens are no more, they shall not awake, nor be roused out of their sleep.

13. भला होता कि तू मुझे अधोलोक में छिपा लेता, और जब तक तेरा कोप ठंढा न हो जाए तब तक मुझे छिपाए रखता, और मेरे लिये समय नियुक्त करके फिर मेरी सुधि लेता।

13. Oh, that you would hide me in the nether world and keep me sheltered till your wrath is past; would fix a time for me, and then remember me!

14. यदि मनुष्य मर जाए तो क्या वह फिर जीवित होगा? जब तक मेरा छूटकारा न होता तब तक मैं अपनी कठिन सेवा के सारे दिन आशा लगाए रहता।

14. When a man has died, were he to live again, all the days of my drudgery I would wait, until my relief should come.

15. तू मुझे बुलाता, और मैं बोलता; तुझे अपने हाथ के बनाए हुए काम की अभिलाषा होती।

15. You would call, and I would answer you; you would esteem the work of your hands.

16. परन्तु अब तू मेरे पग पग को गिनता है, क्या तू मेरे पाप की ताक में लगा नहीं रहता?

16. Surely then you would count my steps, and not keep watch for sin in me.

17. मेरे अपराध छाप लगी हुई थैली में हैं, और तू ने मेरे अधर्म को सी रखा है।

17. My misdeeds would be sealed up in a pouch, and you would cover over my guilt.

18. और निश्चय पहाड़ भी गिरते गिरते नाश हो जाता है, और चट्टान अपने स्थान से हट जाती है;

18. But as a mountain falls at last and its rock is moved from its place,

19. और पत्थर जल से घिस जाते हैं, और भूमि की धूलि उसकी बाढ़ से बहाई जाती है; उसी प्रकार तू मनुष्य की आशा को मिटा देता है।

19. As waters wear away the stones and floods wash away the soil of the land, so you destroy the hope of man.

20. तू सदा उस पर प्रबल होता, और वह जाता रहता है; तू उसका चिहरा बिगाड़कर उसे निकाल देता है।

20. You prevail once for all against him and he passes on; with changed appearance you send him away.

21. उसके पुत्रों की बड़ाई होती है, और यह उसे नहीं सूझता; और उनकी घटी होती है, परन्तु वह उनका हाल नहीं जानता।

21. If his sons are honored, he is not aware of it; if they are in disgrace, he does not know about them.

22. केवल अपने ही कारण उसकी देी को दु:ख होता है; और अपने ही कारण उसका प्राण अन्दर ही अन्दर शोकित रहता है।

22. Only his own flesh pains him, and his soul grieves for him.
