1. शाऊल तीस वर्ष का होकर राज्य करने लगा, और उस ने इस्राएलियों पर दो वर्ष तक राज्य किया।

1. Saul was forty years old when he began to reign; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,

2. फिर शाऊल ने इस्राएलियों में से तीन हजार पुरूषों को अपने लिये चुन लिया; और उन में से दो हजार शाऊल के साथ मिकमाश में और बेतेल के पहाड़ पर रहे, और एक हजार योनातान के साथ बिन्यामीन के गिबा में रहे; और दूसरे सब लोगों को उस ने अपने अपने डेरे में जाने को विदा किया।

2. Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel, whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the Mount of Bethel, and one thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.

3. तब योनातान ने पलिश्तियों की उस चौकी को जो गिबा में भी मार लिया; और इसका समाचार पलिश्तियों के कानों में पड़ा। तब शाऊल ने सारे देश में नरसिंगा फुंकवाकर यह कहला भेजा, कि इब्री लोग सुनें।

3. Jonathan struck the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba: and the Philistines heard of it. Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.

4. और सब इस्राएलियों ने यह समाचार सुना कि शाऊल ने पलिश्तियों की चौकी को मारा है, और यह भी कि पलिश्ती इस्राएल से घृणा करने लगे हैं। तब लोग शाऊल के पीछे चलकर गिलगाल में इकट्ठे हो गए।।

4. All Israel heard say that Saul had struck the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel was had in abomination with the Philistines. The people were gathered together after Saul to Gilgal.

5. और पलिश्ती इस्राएल से युद्ध करने के लिये इकट्ठे हो गए, अर्थात् तीस हजार रथ, और छ: हजार सवार, और समुद्र के तीर की बालू के किनकों के समान बहुत से लोग इकट्ठे हुए; और बेतावेन के पूर्व की ओर जाकर मिकमाश में छावनी डाली।

5. The Philistines assembled themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea-shore in multitude: and they came up, and encamped in Michmash, eastward of Beth Aven.

6. जब इस्राएली पुरूषों ने देखा कि हम सकेती में पड़े हैं (और सचमुच लोग संकट में पड़े थे), तब वे लोग गुफाओं, झाड़ियों, चट्टानों, गढ़ियों, और गढ़हों में जा छिपे।

6. When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait (for the people were distressed), then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in coverts, and in pits.

7. और कितने इब्री यरदन पार होकर गाद और गिलाद के देशों में चले गए; परन्तु शाऊल गिलगाल ही में रहा, और सब लोग थरथराते हुए उसके पीछे हो लिए।।

7. Now some of the Hebrews had gone over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; but as for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

8. वह शमूएल के ठहराए हुए समय, अर्थात् सात दिन तक बाट जोहता रहा; परन्तु शमूएल गिलगाल में न आया, और लोग उसके पास से इधर उधर होने लगे।

8. He stayed seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel didn't come to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.

9. तब शाऊल ने कहा, होमबलि और मेलबलि मेरे पास लाओ। तब उस ने होमबलि को चढ़ाया।

9. Saul said, Bring here the burnt offering to me, and the peace-offerings. He offered the burnt offering.

10. ज्योंही वह होमबलि को चढ़ा चुका, तो क्श्या देखता है कि शमूएल आ पहुंचा; और शाऊल उस से मिलने और नमस्कार करने को निकला।

10. It came to pass that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might greet him.

11. शमूएल ने पूछा, तू ने क्या किया? शाऊल ने कहा, जब मैं ने देखा कि लोग मेरे पास से इधर उधर हो चले हैं, और तू ठहराए हुए :दनों के भीतर नहीं आया, और पलिश्ती मिकपाश में इकट्ठे हुए हैं,

11. Samuel said, What have you done? Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you didn't come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines assembled themselves together at Michmash;

12. तब मैं ने सोचा कि पलिश्ती गिलगाल में मुझ पर अभी आ पड़ेंगे, और मैं ने यहोवा से बिनती भी नहीं की है; सो मैं ने अपनी इच्छा न रहते भी होमबलि चढ़ाया।

12. therefore said I, Now will the Philistines come down on me to Gilgal, and I haven't entreated the favor of Yahweh: I forced myself therefore, and offered the burnt offering.

13. शमूएल ने शाऊल से कहा, तू ने मूर्खता का काम किया है; तू ने अपने परमेश्वर यहोवा की आज्ञा को नहीं माना; नहीं तो यहोवा तेरा राज्य इस्राएलियों के ऊपर सदा स्थिर रखता।

13. Samuel said to Saul, You have done foolishly; you have not kept the commandment of Yahweh your God, which he commanded you: for now would Yahweh have established your kingdom on Israel forever.

14. परन्तु अब तेरा राज्य बना न रहेगा; यहोवा ने अपने लिये एक ऐसे पुरूष को ढूंढ़ लिया है जो उसके मन के अनुसार है; और यहोवा ने उसी को अपनी प्रजा पर प्रधान होने को ठहराया है, क्योंकि तू ने यहोवा की आज्ञा को नहीं माना।।

14. But now your kingdom shall not continue: Yahweh has sought him a man after his own heart, and Yahweh has appointed him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept that which Yahweh commanded you.

15. तब शमूएल चल निकला, और गिलगाल से बिन्यामीन के गिबा को गया। और शाऊल ने अपने साथ के लोगों को गिनकर कोई छ: सौ पाए।

15. Samuel arose, and got him up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. Saul numbered the people who were present with him, about six hundred men.

16. और शाऊल और उसका पुत्रा योनातान और जो लोग उनके साथ थे वे बिन्यामीन के गिबा में रहे; और पलिश्ती मिकमाश में डेरे डाले पड़े रहे।

16. Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people who were present with them, abode in Geba of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.

17. और पलिश्तियों की छावनी से नाश करनेवाले तीन दल बान्धकर निकल; एक दल ने शूआल नाम देश की ओर फिर के ओप्रा का मार्ग लिया,

17. The spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned to the way that leads to Ophrah, to the land of Shual;

18. एक और दल ने मुझकर बेथोरोन का मार्ग लिया, और एक और दल ने मुड़कर उस देश का मार्ग लिया जो सबोईम नाम तराई की ओर जंगल की तरफ है।।

18. and another company turned the way to Beth Horon; and another company turned the way of the border that looks down on the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.

19. और इस्राएल के पूरे देश में लोहार कहीं नहीं मिलता था, क्योंकि पलिश्तियों ने कहा था, कि इब्री तलवार वा भाला बनाने न पांए;

19. Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel; for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:

20. इसलिये सब इस्राएली अपने अपने हल की फली, और भाले, और कुल्हाड़ी, और हंसुआ तेज करने के लिये पलिश्तियों के पास जाते थे;

20. but all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his plowshare, mattock, axe, and sickle;

21. परन्तु उनके हंसुओं, फालों, खेती के त्रिशूलों, और कुल्हाड़ियों की धारें, और पैनों की नोकें ठीक करने के लिये वे रेती रखते थे।

21. yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the plowshares, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to set the goads.

22. सो युद्ध के दिन शाऊल और योनातान के साथियों में से किसी के पास न तो तलवार थी और न भाला, वे केवल शाऊल और उसके पुत्रा योनातान के पास रहे।

22. So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.

23. और पलिश्तियों की चौकी के सिपाही निकलकर मिकमाश की घाटी को गए।।

23. The garrison of the Philistines went out to the pass of Michmash.
