1. चैन के साथ सूखा टुकड़ा, उस घर की अपेक्षा उत्तम है जो मेलबलि- पशुओं से भरा हो, परन्तु उस में झगड़े रगड़े हों।

1. Better [is] a dry morsel, and rest with it, Than a house full of the sacrifices of strife.

2. बुद्धि से चलनेवाला दास अपने स्वामी के उस पुत्रा पर जो लज्जा का कारण होता है प्रभुता करेगा, और उस पुत्रा के भाइयों के बीच भागी होगा।

2. A wise servant ruleth over a son causing shame, And in the midst of brethren He apportioneth an inheritance.

3. चान्दी के लिये कुठाली, और सोने के लिये भट्ठी हाती है, परन्तु मनों को यहोवा जांचता है।

3. A refining pot [is] for silver, and a furnace for gold, And the trier of hearts [is] Jehovah.

4. कुकर्मी अनर्थ बात को ध्यान देकर सुनता है, और झूठा मनुष्य दुष्टता की बात की ओर कान लगाता है।

4. An evil doer is attentive to lips of vanity, Falsehood is giving ear to a mischievous tongue.

5. जो निर्धन को ठट्ठों में उड़ाता है, वह उसके कर्त्ता की निन्दा करता है; और जो किसी की विपत्ति पर हंसता, वह निर्दोष नहीं ठहरेगा।

5. Whoso is mocking at the poor Hath reproached his Maker, Whoso is rejoicing at calamity is not acquitted.

6. बूढ़ों की शोभा उनके नाती पोते हैं; और बाल- बच्चों की शोभा उनके माता- पिता हैं।

6. Sons' sons [are] the crown of old men, And the glory of sons [are] their fathers.

7. मूढ़ तो उत्तम बात फबती नहीं, और अधिक करके प्रधान को झूठी बात नहीं फबती।

7. Not comely for a fool is a lip of excellency, Much less for a noble a lip of falsehood.

8. देनेवाले के हाथ में घूस मोह लेनेवाले मणि का काम देता है; जिधर ऐसा पुरूष फिरता, उधर ही उसका काम सुफल होता है।

8. A stone of grace [is] the bribe in the eyes of its possessors, Whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.

9. जो दूसरे के अपराध को ढांप देता, वह प्रेम का खोजी ठहरता है, परन्तु जो बात की चर्चा बार बार करता है, वह परम मित्रों में भी फूट करा देता है।

9. Whoso is covering transgression is seeking love, And whoso is repeating a matter Is separating a familiar friend.

10. एक घुड़की समझनेवाले के मन में जितनी गड़ जाती है, उतना सौ बार मार खाना मूर्ख के मन में नहीं गड़ता।

10. Rebuke cometh down on the intelligent More than a hundred stripes on a fool.

11. बुरा मनुष्य दंगे ही का यत्न करता है, इसलिये उसके पास क्रूर दूत भेजा जाएगा।

11. An evil man seeketh only rebellion, And a fierce messenger is sent against him.

12. बच्चा- छीनी- हुई- रीछनी से मिलना तो भला है, परन्तु मूढ़ता में डूबे हुए मूर्ख से मिलना भला नहीं।

12. The meeting of a bereaved bear by a man, And -- not a fool in his folly.

13. जो कोई भलाई के बदले में बुराई करे, उसके घर से बुराई दूर न होगी।

13. Whoso is returning evil for good, Evil moveth not from his house.

14. झगड़े का आरम्भ बान्ध के छेद के समान है, झगड़ा बढ़ने से पहिले उसको छोड़ देता उचित है।

14. The beginning of contention [is] a letting out of waters, And before it is meddled with leave the strife.

15. जो दोषी को निर्दोष, और जो निर्दोष को दोषी ठहराता है, उन दोनों से यहोवा घृणा करता है।

15. Whoso is justifying the wicked, And condemning the righteous, Even both of these [are] an abomination to Jehovah.

16. बुद्धि मोल लेने के लिये मूर्ख अपने हाथ में दाम क्यों लिए हैं? वह उसे चाहता ही नहीं।

16. Why [is] this -- a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, And a heart there is none?

17. मित्रा सब समयों में प्रेम रखता है, और विपत्ति के दिन भाई बन जाता है।

17. At all times is the friend loving, And a brother for adversity is born.

18. निर्बुद्धि मनुष्य हाथ पर हाथ मारता है, और अपने पड़ोसी के सामने उत्तरदायी होता है।

18. A man lacking heart is striking hands, A surety he becometh before his friend.

19. जो झगड़े- रगड़े में प्रीति रखता, वह अपराण करने में भी प्रीति रखता है, और जो अपने फाटक को बड़ा करता, वह अपने विनाश के लिये यत्न करता है।

19. Whoso is loving transgression is loving debate, Whoso is making high his entrance is seeking destruction.

20. जो मन का टेढ़ा है, उसका कल्याण नहीं होता, और उलट- फेर की बात करनेवाला विपत्ति में पड़ता है।

20. The perverse of heart findeth not good, And the turned in his tongue falleth into evil.

21. जो मूर्ख को जन्माता है वह उस से दु:ख ही पाता है; और मूढ़ के पिता को आनन्द नहीं होता।

21. Whoso is begetting a fool hath affliction for it, Yea, the father of a fool rejoiceth not.

22. मन का आनन्द अच्छी औषधि है, परन्तु मन के टूटने से हडि्डयां सूख जाती हैं।

22. A rejoicing heart doth good to the body, And a smitten spirit drieth the bone.

23. दुष्ट जन न्याय बिगाड़ने के लिये, अपनी गांठ से घूस निकालता है।

23. A bribe from the bosom the wicked taketh, To turn aside the paths of judgment.

24. बुद्धि समझनेवाले के साम्हने ही रहती है, परन्तु मूर्ख की आंखे पृथ्वी के दूर दूर देशों में लगी रहती है।

24. The face of the intelligent [is] to wisdom, And the eyes of a fool -- at the end of the earth.

25. ूमूर्ख पुत्रा से पिता उदास होता है, और जननी को शोक होता है।

25. A provocation to his father [is] a foolish son, And bitterness to her that bare him.

26. फिर धर्मी से दण्ड लेना, और प्रधानों को सिधाई के कारण पिटवाना, दोनों काम अच्छे नहीं हैं।

26. Also, to fine the righteous is not good, To smite nobles for uprightness.

27. जो संभलकर बोलता है, वही ज्ञानी ठहरता है; और जिसी आत्मा शान्त रहती है, सोई समझवाला पुरूष ठहरता है।

27. One acquainted with knowledge is sparing his words, And the cool of temper [is] a man of understanding.

28. मूढ़ भी जब चुप रहता है, तब बुद्धिमान गिना जाता है; और जो अपना मुंह बन्द रखता वह समझवाला गिना जाता है।।

28. Even a fool keeping silence is reckoned wise, He who is shutting his lips intelligent!
