1. THE PROVERBS (truths obscurely expressed, maxims, and parables) of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

2. इनके द्वारा पढ़नेवाला बुद्धि और शिक्षा प्राप्त करे, और समझ की बातें समझे,

2. That people may know skillful and godly Wisdom and instruction, discern and comprehend the words of understanding and insight,

3. और काम करने में प्रवीणता, और धर्म, न्याय और सीधाई की शिक्षा पाए;

3. Receive instruction in wise dealing and the discipline of wise thoughtfulness, righteousness, justice, and integrity,

4. कि भोलों को चतुराई, और जवान को ज्ञान और विवेक मिले;

4. That prudence may be given to the simple, and knowledge, discretion, and discernment to the youth--

5. कि बुद्धिमान सुनकर अपनी विद्या बढ़ाए, और समझदार बुद्धि का उपदेश पाए,

5. The wise also will hear and increase in learning, and the person of understanding will acquire skill and attain to sound counsel [so that he may be able to steer his course rightly]--[Prov. 9:9.]

6. जिस से वे नितिवचन और दृष्टान्त को, और बुद्धिमानों के वचन और उनके रहस्यों को समझें।।

6. That people may understand a proverb and a figure of speech or an enigma with its interpretation, and the words of the wise and their dark sayings or riddles.

7. यहोवा का भय मानना बुद्धि का मूल है; बुद्धि और शिक्ष को मूढ़ ही लोग तुच्छ जानते हैं।।

7. The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning and the principal and choice part of knowledge [its starting point and its essence]; but fools despise skillful and godly Wisdom, instruction, and discipline. [Ps. 111:10.]

8. हे मेरे पुत्रा, अपने पिता की शिक्षा पर कान लगा, और अपनी माता की शिक्षा को न तज;

8. My son, hear the instruction of your father; reject not nor forsake the teaching of your mother.

9. क्योंकि वे मानो तेरे सिर के लिये शोभायमान मुकुट, और तेरे गले के लिये कन्ठ माला होगी।

9. For they are a [victor's] chaplet (garland) of grace upon your head and chains and pendants [of gold worn by kings] for your neck.

10. हे मेरे पुत्रा, यदि पापी लोग तुझे फुसलाए, तो उनकी बात न मानना।

10. My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent. [Ps. 1:1; Eph. 5:11.]

11. यदि वे कहें, हमारे संग चल कि, हम हत्या करने के लिये घात जगाएं हम निर्दोषों की ताक में रहें;

11. If they say, Come with us; let us lie in wait [to shed] blood, let us ambush the innocent without cause [and show that his piety is in vain];

12. हम अधोलोक की नाईं उनको जीवता, कबर में पड़े हुओं के समान समूचा निगल जाएं;

12. Let us swallow them up alive as does Sheol (the place of the dead), and whole, as those who go down into the pit [of the dead];

13. हम को सब प्रकार के अनमोल पदार्थ मिलेंगे, हम अपने घरों को लूट से भर लेंगे;

13. We shall find and take all kinds of precious goods [when our victims are put out of the way], we shall fill our houses with plunder;

14. तू हमारा साझी हो जा, हम सभों का एक ही बटुआ हो,

14. Throw in your lot with us [they insist] and be a sworn brother and comrade; let us all have one purse in common--

15. तो, हे मेरे पुत्रा तू उनके संग मार्ग में न चलना, वरन उनकी डगर में पांव भी न धरना;

15. My son, do not walk in the way with them; restrain your foot from their path;

16. क्योंकि वे बुराई की करने को दौड़ते हैं, और हत्या करने को फुर्ती करते हैं।
रोमियों 3:15-17

16. For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.

17. क्योंकि पक्षी के देखते हुए जाल फैलाना व्यर्थ होता है;

17. For in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird!

18. और ये लोग तो अपनी ही हत्या करने के लिये घात लगाते हैं, और अपने ही प्राणों की घात की ताक में रहते हैं।

18. But [when these men set a trap for others] they are lying in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives.

19. सब लालचियों की चाल ऐसी ही होती है; उनका प्राण लालच ही के कारण नाश हो जाता है।।

19. So are the ways of everyone who is greedy of gain; such [greed for plunder] takes away the lives of its possessors. [Prov. 15:27; I Tim. 6:10.]

20. बुद्धि सड़क मे ऊंचे स्वर से बोलती है; और चौकों में प्रचार करती है;

20. Wisdom cries aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the markets;

21. वह बाजारों की भीड़ में पुकारती है; वह फाटकों के बीच में और नगर के भीतर भी ये बातें बोलती है:

21. She cries at the head of the noisy intersections [in the chief gathering places]; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:

22. हे भोले लोगो, तुम कब तक भोलेपन से प्रीति रखोगे? और हे ठट्ठा करनेवालो, तुम कब तक ठट्ठा करने से प्रसन्न रहोगे? और हे मूर्खों, तुम कब तक ज्ञान से बैर रखोगे?

22. How long, O simple ones [open to evil], will you love being simple? And the scoffers delight in scoffing and [self-confident] fools hate knowledge?

23. तुम मेरी डांट सुनकर मन फिराओ; सुनो, मैं अपनी आत्मा तुम्हारे लिये उण्डेल दूंगी; मैं तुम को अपने वचन बताऊंगी।

23. If you will turn (repent) and give heed to my reproof, behold, I [Wisdom] will pour out my spirit upon you, I will make my words known to you. [Isa. 11:2; Eph. 1:17-20.]

24. मैं ने तो पुकारा परन्तु तुम ने इनकार किया, और मैं ने हाथ फैलाया, परन्तु किसी ने ध्यान न दिया,

24. Because I have called and you have refused [to answer], have stretched out my hand and no man has heeded it, [Isa. 65:11, 12; 66:4; Jer. 7:13, 14; Zech. 7:11-13.]

25. वरन तुम ने मेरी सारी सम्मति को अनसुनी किया, और मेरी ताड़ना का मूल्य न जाना;

25. And you treated as nothing all my counsel and would accept none of my reproof,

26. इसलिये मैं भी तुम्हारी विपत्ति के समय हंसूंगी; और जब तुम पर भय आ पड़ेगा,

26. I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when the thing comes that shall cause you terror and panic--

27. वरन आंधी की नाई तुम पर भय आ पड़ेगा, और विपत्ति बवण्डर के समान आ पड़ेगी, और तुम संकट और सकेती में फंसोगे, तब मैं ठट्ठा करूंगी।

27. When your panic comes as a storm and desolation and your calamity comes on as a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.

28. उस समय वे मुझे पुकारेंगे, और मैं न सुनूंगी; वे मुझे यत्न से तो ढूंढ़ेंगे, परन्तु न पाएंगे।

28. Then will they call upon me [Wisdom] but I will not answer; they will seek me early and diligently but they will not find me. [Job 27:9; 35:12, 13; Isa. 1:15, 16; Jer. 11:11; Mic. 3:4; James 4:3.]

29. क्योंकि उन्हों ने ज्ञान से बैर किया, और यहोवा का भय मानना उनको न भाया।

29. Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord, [Prov. 8:13.]

30. उन्हों ने मेरी सम्पत्ति न चाही वरन मेरी सब ताड़नाओं को तुच्छ जाना।

30. Would accept none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof,

31. इसलिये वे अपनी करनी का फल आप भोगेंगे, और अपनी युक्तियों के फल से अघा जाएंगे।

31. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way and be satiated with their own devices.

32. क्योंकि भोले लोगों का भटक जाना, उनके घात किए जाने का कारण होगा, और निश्चिन्त रहने के कारण मूढ़ लोग नाश होंगे;

32. For the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, and the careless ease of [self-confident] fools shall destroy them. [Isa. 32:6.]

33. परन्तु जो मेरी सुनेगा, वह निडर बसा रहेगा, और बेखटके सुख से रहेगा।।

33. But whoso hearkens to me [Wisdom] shall dwell securely and in confident trust and shall be quiet, without fear or dread of evil.
