1. उन्हीं दिनों में ऐसा हुआ, कि यहूदा अपने भाईयों के पास से चला गया, और हीरा नाम एक अदुल्लामवासी पुरूष के पास डेरा किया।

1. Judah went away from his brothers at that time. He visited a certain Adullamite whose name was Hirah.

2. वहां यहूदा ने शूआ नाम एक कनानी पुरूष की बेटी को देखा; और उसको ब्याहकर उसके पास गया।

2. There Judah saw a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua. He took her as his wife and lived with her.

3. वह गर्भवती हुई, और उसके एक पुत्रा उत्पन्न हुआ; और यहूदा ने उसका नाम एर रखा।

3. And she was going to have a child and gave birth to a son. He gave him the name Er.

4. और वह फिर गर्भवती हुई, और उसके एक पुत्रा उत्पन्न हुआ; और उसका नाम ओनान रखा गया।

4. Then she was going to have another child and she gave birth to a son. She gave him the name Onan.

5. फिर उसके एक पुत्रा और उत्पन्न हुआ, और उसका नाम शेला रखा गया : और जिस समय इसका जन्म हुआ उस समय यहूदा कजीब में रहता था।

5. Then she gave birth to another son at Chezib. And she gave him the name Shelah.

6. और यहूदा ने तामार नाम एक स्त्री से अपने जेठे एर का विवाह कर दिया।

6. Judah chose a wife for his firstborn son Er. Her name was Tamar.

7. परन्तु यहूदा का वह जेठा एर यहोवा के लेखे में दुष्ट था, इसलिये यहोवा ने उसको मार डाला।

7. But Er, Judah's first-born, was sinful in the eyes of the Lord. So the Lord took his life.

8. तब यहूदा ने ओनान से कहा, अपनी भौजाई के पास जा, और उसके साथ देवर का धर्म पूरा करके अपने भाई के लिये सन्तान उत्पन्न कर।

8. Then Judah said to Onan, 'Go in to your brother's wife. Do your duty as her brother-in-law. Have children for your brother.'

9. ओनान तो जानता था कि सन्तान तो मेरी न ठहरेगी: सो ऐसा हुआ, कि जब वह अपनी भौजाई के पास गया, तब उस ने भूमि पर वीर्य गिराकर नाश किया, जिस से ऐसा न हो कि उसके भाई के नाम से वंश चले।

9. But Onan knew that the children would not be his. So when he went in to his brother's wife, he wasted his seed on the ground to keep his brother from having children.

10. यह काम जो उस ने किया उसे यहोवा अप्रसन्न हुआ: और उस ने उसको भी मार डाला।

10. What he did was sinful in the eyes of the Lord. So the Lord took his life also.

11. तब यहूदा ने इस डर के मारे, कि कहीं ऐसा न हो कि अपने भाइयों की नाई शेला भी मरे, अपनी बहू तामार से कहा, जब तक मेरा पुत्रा शेला सियाना न हो तब तक अपने पिता के घर में विधवा की बैठी रह, सो तामार अपने पिता के घर में जाकर रहने लगी।

11. Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, 'Stay in your father's house as a woman whose husband has died, until my son Shelah is grown. 'For he thought, 'I am afraid that he also may die like his brothers.' So Tamar went and lived in her father's house.

12. बहुत समय के बीतने पर यहूदा की पत्नी जो शूआ की बेटी थी सो मर गई; फिर यहूदा शोक से छूटकर अपने मित्रा हीरा अदुल्लामवासी समेत अपनी भेड़- बकरियों का ऊन कतराने के लिये तिम्नाथ को गया।

12. Now after a long time, Shua's daughter, the wife of Judah, died. And after the time of sorrow, Judah and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went to the men who cut the wool from his sheep at Timnah.

13. और तामार को यह समाचार मिला, कि तेरा ससुर अपनी भेड़- बकरियों का ऊन कतराने के लिये तिम्नाथ को जा रहा है।

13. It was told to Tamar, 'Your father-in-law is going to Timnah to cut the wool from his sheep.'

14. तब उस ने यह सोचकर, कि शेला सियाना तो हो गया पर मैं उसकी स्त्री नहीं होने पाई; अपना विधवापन का पहिरावा उतारा, और घूंघट डालकर अपने को ढांप लिया, और एनैम नगर के फाटक के पास, जो तिम्नाथ के मार्ग में है, जा बैठी:

14. So she took off the clothes of a woman whose husband has died and put on other clothes and covered her face with cloth. Then she sat in the gate of Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that Shelah was grown, and she had not been given to him for a wife.

15. जब यहूदा ने उसको देखा, उस ने उस को वेश्या समझा; क्योंकि वह अपना मुंह ढ़ापे हुए थी।

15. When Judah saw her, he thought she was a woman who sold the use of her body. For she had covered her face.

16. और वह मार्ग से उसकी ओर फिरा और उस से कहने लगा, मुझे अपने पास आने दे, (क्योंकि उसे यह मालूम न था कि वह उसकी बहू है)। और वह कहने लगी, कि यदि मैं तुझे अपने पास आने दूं, तो तू मुझे क्या देगा?

16. He went to her at the side of the road, and said, 'Here now, let me come in to you.' He did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said, 'What will you give me to come in to me?'

17. उस ने कहा, मैं अपनी बकरियों में से बकरी का एक बच्चा तेरे पास भेज दूंगा।

17. He answered, 'I will send you a young goat from the flock.' She asked, 'Will you give something as a promise until you send it?'

18. उस ने पूछा, मैं तेरे पास क्या रेहन रख जाऊं? उस ने कहा, अपनी मुहर, और बाजूबन्द, और अपने हाथ की छड़ी। तब उस ने उसको वे वसतुएं दे दीं, और उसके पास गया, और वह उस से गर्भवती हुई।

18. He said, 'What should I give you as a promise?' And she said, 'The ring you use to mark your name, and its string, and the stick that is in your hand.' So he gave them to her and went in to her. And she was going to have a baby by him.

19. तब वह उठकर चली गई, और अपना घूंघट उतारके अपना विधवापन का पहिरावा फिर पहिन लिया।

19. Then she got up and left. She took off the cloth that covered her, and put on the clothes worn by a woman whose husband has died.

20. तब यहूदा ने बकरी का बच्चा अपने मित्रा उस अदुल्लामवासी के हाथ भेज दिया, कि वह रेहन रखी हुई वस्तुएं उस स्त्री के हाथ से छुड़ा ले आए; पर वह स्त्री उसको न मिली।

20. Judah sent his friend the Adullamite to bring the young goat to the woman and take from her the things he had given as a promise. But he did not find her.

21. तब उस ने वहां के लोगों से पूछा, कि वह देवदासी जो एनैम में मार्ग की एक और बैठी थी, कहां है? उन्हों ने कहा, यहां तो कोई देवदासी न थी।

21. He asked the men of the place, 'Where is the woman who was selling the use of her body beside the road at Enaim?' They said, 'There has been no woman selling the use of her body here.'

22. सो उस ने यहूदा के पास लौटके कहा, मुझे वह नहीं मिली; और उस स्थान के लोगों ने कहा, कि यहां तो कोई देवदासी न थी।

22. So he returned to Judah, and said, 'I did not find her. The men of the place said, 'There has been no woman selling the use of her body here.' '

23. तब यहूदा ने कहा, अच्छा, वह बन्धक उस के पास रहने दे, नहीं तो हम लोग तुच्छ गिने जाएंगे: देख, मैं ने बकरी का यह बच्चा भेज दिया, पर वह तुझे नहीं मिली।

23. Then Judah said, 'Let her keep the things, or else we will be laughed at. I sent the young goat, and you did not find her.'

24. और तीन महीने के पीछे यहूदा को यह समाचार मिला, कि तेरी बहू तामार ने व्यभिचार किया है; वरन वह व्यभिचार से गर्भवती भी हो गई है। तब यहूदा ने कहा, उसको बाहर ले आओ, कि वह जलाई जाए।

24. About three months later, Judah was told, 'Your daughter-in-law Tamar has sold the use of her body. She is going to have a baby by doing this sinful thing.' Judah said, 'Bring her out and let her be burned!'

25. जब उसे बाहर निकाल रहे थे, तब उस ने, अपने ससुर के पास यह कहला भेजा, कि जिस पुरूष की ये वस्तुएं हैं, उसी से मैं गर्भवती हूं; फिर उस ने यह भी कहलाया, कि पहिचान तो सही, कि यह मुहर, और वाजूबन्द, और छड़ी किस की है।

25. When she was brought out, she sent word to her father-in-law, 'I am going to have a baby by the man who owns these things.' She said, 'Look and see, who owns this ring for marking a name, and this string and stick?'

26. यहूदा ने उन्हें पहिचानकर कहा, वह तो मुझ से कम दोषी है; क्योंकि मैं ने उसे अपने पुत्रा शेला को न ब्याह दिया। और उस ने उस से फिर कभी प्रसंग न किया।

26. Judah saw that they belonged to him. He said, 'She is more right than I, because I did not give her to my son Shelah.' And he did not lie with her again.

27. जब उसके जनने का समय आया, तब यह जान पड़ा कि उसके गर्भ में जुड़वे बच्चे हैं।

27. When the time came for Tamar to give birth, there were two babies.

28. और जब वह जनने लगी तब एक बालक ने अपना हाथ बढ़ाया: और धाय ने लाल सूत लेकर उसके हाथ में यह कहते हुये बान्ध दिया, कि पहिले यही उत्पन्न हुआ।

28. While she was giving birth, one put out a hand. The nurse took his hand and tied a red string around it, saying, 'This one came out first.'

29. जब उस ने हाथ समेट लिया, तब उसका भाई उत्पन्न हो गया: तब उस धाय ने कहा, तू क्यों बरबस निकल आया है ? इसलिये उसका नाम पेरेस रखा गया।

29. But when he pulled away his hand, his brother was born. Then she said, 'What an opening you have made for yourself!' So he was given the name of Perez.

30. पीछे उसका भाई जिसके हाथ में लाल सूत बन्धा था उत्पन्न हुआ, और उसका नाम जेरह रखा गया।।

30. After that, his brother came out with the red string around his hand. He was given the name Zerah.
