1. भला होता, कि मेरा सिर जल ही जल, और मेरी आंखें आँसुओं का सोता होतीं, कि मैं रात दिन अपने मारे हुए लोगों के लिये रोता रहता।

1. I wish that my eyes were fountains of tears, so I could cry day and night for my people who were killed.

2. भला होता कि मुझे जंगल में बटोहियों का कोई टिकाब मिलता कि मैं अपने लोगों को छोड़कर वहीं चला जाता ! क्योंकि वे सब व्यभिचारी हैं, वे विश्वासघातियों का समाज हैं।

2. I wish I could go into the desert and find a hiding place from all who are treacherous and unfaithful to God.

3. अपनी अपनी जीभ को वे धनुष की नाई झूठ होलने के लिये तैयार करते हैं, और देश में बलवन्त तो हो गए, परन्तु सच्चाई के लिये नहीं; वे बुराई पर बुराई बढ़ाते जाते हैं, और वे मुझ को जानते ही नहीं, यहोवा की यही वाणी है।

3. The LORD replied: Lies come from the mouths of my people, like arrows from a bow. With each dishonest deed their power increases, and not one of them will admit that I am God.

4. अपने अपने संगी से चौकस रहो, अपने भाई पर भी भरोसा न रखो; क्योंकि सब भाई निश्चय अड़ंगा मारेंगे, और हर एक पड़ोसी लुतराई करते फिरेंगे।

4. Jeremiah, all your friends and relatives tell lies about you, so don't trust them.

5. वे एक दूसरे को ठगेंगे और सच नहीं बोलेंगे; उन्हों ने झूठ ही बोलना सीखा है; और कुटिलता ही में परिश्रम करते हैं।

5. They wear themselves out, always looking for a new way to cheat their friends.

6. तेरा निवास छल के बीच है; छल ही के कारण वे मेरा ज्ञान नहीं चाहते, यहोवा की यही वाणी है।

6. Everyone takes advantage of everyone else, and no one will admit that I am God.

7. इसलिये सेनाओं का यहोवा यों कहता है, देख, मैं उनको तपाकर परखूंगा, क्योंकि अपनी प्रजा के कारण मैं उन से और क्या कर सकता हूं?

7. And so I will purify the hearts of my people just as gold is purified in a furnace. I have no other choice.

8. उनकी जीभ काल के तीर के समान बेधनेवाली है, उस से छल की बातें निकलती हैं; वे मुंह से तो एक दूसरे से मेल की बात बोलते हैं पर मन ही मन एक दूसरे की घात में लगे रहते हैं।

8. They say they want peace, but this lie is deadly, like an arrow that strikes when you least expect it.

9. क्या मैं ऐसी बातों का दणड न दूं? यहोवा की सह वाणी है, क्या मैं ऐसी जाति से अपना पलटा न लूं?

9. Give me one good reason not to punish them as they deserve. I, the LORD All-Powerful, have spoken.

10. मैं पहाड़ों के लिये रो उठूंगा और शोक का गीत गाऊंगा, और जंगल की चराइयों के लिये विलाप का गीत गाऊंगा, क्योंकि वे ऐसे जल गए हैं कि कोई उन में से होकर नहीं चलता, और उन में ढोर का शब्द भी नहीं सुनाई पड़ता; पशु- पक्षी सब भाग गए हैं।

10. I weep for the pastureland in the hill country. It's so barren and scorched that no one travels there. No cattle can be found there, and birds and wild animals have all disappeared.

11. मैं यरूशलेम को डीह ही डीह करके गीदड़ों का स्थान बनाऊंगा; और यहूदा के नगरों को ऐसा उजाड़ दूंगा कि उन में कोई न बसेगा।

11. I heard the LORD reply, 'When I am finished, Jerusalem and the towns of Judah will be piles of ruins where only jackals live.'

12. जो बुध्दिमान मुरूष हो वह इसका भेद समझ ले, और जिस ने यहोवा के मुख से इसका कारण सुना हो वह बता दे। देश का नाश क्यों हुआ? क्यों वह जंगल की नाई ऐसा जल गया कि उस में से होकर कोई नहीं चलता?

12. I said to the LORD, 'None of us can understand why the land has become like an uncrossable desert. Won't you explain why?'

13. और यहोवा ने कहा, क्योंकि उन्हों ने मेरी व्यवस्था को जो मैं ने उनके आगे रखी थी छोड़ दिया; और न मेरी बात मानी और न उसके अनुसार चले हैं,

13. The LORD said: I destroyed the land because the people disobeyed me and rejected my laws and teachings.

14. वरन वे उपने हठ पर बाल नाम देवताओं के पीछे चले, जैसा उनके पुरखाओं ने उनको सिखलाया।

14. They were stubborn and worshiped Baal, just as their ancestors did.

15. इस कारण, सेनाओं का यहोवा, इस्राएल का परमेश्वर यों कहता है, सुन, मैं अपनी इस प्रजा को कड़वी वस्तु खिलाऊंगा और विष पिलाऊंगा।

15. So I, the LORD All-Powerful, the God of Israel, promise them poison to eat and drink.

16. और मैं उन लोगों को ऐसी जातियों में तितर बितर करूंगा जिन्हें न तो वे न उनके पुरखा जानते थे; और जब तक उनका अन्त न हो जाए तब तक मेरी ओर से तलवार उनके पीछे पड़ेगी।

16. I'll scatter them in foreign countries that they and their ancestors have never even heard of. Finally, I will send enemy soldiers to kill every last one of them.

17. सेनाओं का यहोवा यों कहता है, सोचो, और विलाप करनेवालियों को बुलाओ; बुध्दिमान स्त्रियों को बतलवा भेजो;

17. The LORD All-Powerful said, 'Send for the women who are paid to weep at funerals, especially the women who can cry the loudest.'

18. वे फुत करके हम लोगों के लिये शोक का गीत गाएं कि हमारी आंखों से आंसू बह चलें और हमारी पलकें जल बहाए।

18. The people answered, 'Let them come quickly and cry for us, until our own eyes are flooded with tears.

19. सिरयोन से शोक का यह गीत सुन पड़ता है, हम कैसे नाश हो गए ! हम क्यों लज्जा में पड़ गए हैं, क्योंकि हम को अपना देश छोड़ना पड़ा और हमारे घर गिरा दिए गए हैं।

19. Now those of us on Zion cry, 'We are ruined! We can't stand the shame. Our homes have been destroyed, and we must leave our land.'

20. We ask you women to pay attention to what the LORD says. We will teach you a funeral song that you can teach your daughters and friends:

21. क्योंकि मृत्यु हमारी खिड़कियों से होकर हमारे महलों में घुस आई है, कि, हमारी सड़कों में बच्चों को और चौकों में जवानों को मिटा दे।

21. 'We were in our fortress, but death sneaked in through our windows. It even struck down children at play and our strongest young men.'

22. तू कह, यहोवा यों कहता है, मनुष्यों की लोथें ऐसी पड़ी रहेंगी जैसा खाद खेत के ऊपर, और पूलियां काटनेवाले के पीछे पड़ी रहती हैं, और उनका कोई उठानेवाला न होगा।

22. The LORD has told us the ground will be covered with dead bodies, like stalks of ungathered grain or like manure.'

23. यहोवा यों कहता है, बुध्दिमान अपनी बुध्दि पर घमणड न करे, न वीर अपनी वीरता पर, त धनी अपने धन पर घमणड करे;

23. The LORD says: Don't brag about your wisdom or strength or wealth.

24. परन्तु जो घमणड करे वह इसी बात पर घमणड करे, कि वह मुझे जानता और समझता हे, कि मैं ही वह यहोवा हूँ, जो पृथ्वी पर करूणा, न्याय और धर्म के काम करता है; क्योंकि मैं इन्हीं बातों से प्रसन्न रहता हूँ।

24. If you feel you must brag, then have enough sense to brag about worshiping me, the LORD. What I like best is showing kindness, justice, and mercy to everyone on earth.

25. देखो, यहोवा की यह वाणी है कि ऐसे दिन आनेवाले हैं कि जिनका खतना हुआ हो, उनको खतनारहितों के समान दणड दूंगा,

25. Someday I will punish the nations of Egypt, Edom, Ammon, and Moab, and the tribes of the desert. The men of these nations are circumcised, but they don't worship me. And it's the same with you people of Judah. Your bodies are circumcised, but your hearts are unchanged.

26. अर्थात् मिस्रियों, यहूदियों, एदोमियों, अम्मोनियों, मोआबियों को, और उन रेगिस्तान के निवासियों के समान जो अपने गाल के बालों को मुंड़ा डालते हैं; क्योंकि ये सब जातियें तो खतनारहित हैं, और इस्राएल का सारा घराना भी मन में खतनारहित है।
