1. हे यहोवा, यदि मैं तुझ से मुक़ मा लड़ूं, तौभी तू धम है; मुझे अपने साथ इस विषय पर वादविवाद करने दे। दुष्टों की चाल क्यों सफंल होती है? क्या कारण है कि विश्वासघाती बहुत सुख से रहते हैं?

1. Righteous, art thou O Yahweh, when I present my pleading unto thee, Yet, concerning the things that are right, let me speak with thee, Wherefore hath, the way of the lawless, prospered? Wherefore have all, utter traitors, been at ease?

2. तू उनको बोता और वे जड़ भी पकड़ते; वे बढ़ते और फलते भी हैं; तू उनके मुंह के निकट है परन्तु उनके मनों से दूर है।

2. Thou didst plant them, yea they took root, They have gone on yea they have borne fruit, Near, art thou, in their mouth, But far off from their affections,

3. हे यहोवा तू मुझे जानता है; तू मुझे देखता है, और तू ने मेरे मन की परीक्षा करके देखा कि मैं तेरी ओर किस प्रकार रहता हूँ। जैसे भेड़- बकरियां घात होने के लिये झुण्ड में से निकाली जाती हैं, वैसे ही उनको भी निकाल ले और वध के दिन के लिये तैयार कर।

3. But thou O Yahweh, knowest me, Wilt thou observe me and try my heart towards thee? Drag them away, as sheep for slaughter, And hallow them for the day when they are to be slain.

4. कब तक देश विलाप करता रहेगा, और सारे मैदान की घास सूखी रहेगी? देश के निवासियों की बुराई के कारण पशु- पक्षी सब नाश हो गए हैं, क्योंकि उन लोगों ने कहा, वह हमारे अन्त को न देखेगा।

4. How long, shall the land mourn, And, the herbage of the whole field, wither? For the wickedness of them that dwell therein, beast and bird, have perished, For say they, He will not see our latter end!

5. तू जो प्यादों ही के संग दौड़कर थक गया है तो घेड़ों के संग क्योंकर बराबरी कर सकेगा? और यद्यपि तू शान्ति के इस देश में निडर है, परन्तु यरदन के आसपास के धने जंगल में तू क्या करेगा?

5. If, with the footmen, thou hast run and they have wearied thee, How then wilt thou hotly contend with horses? Though in a safe land thou art confident, Yet how wilt thou deal with the proud banks of the Jordan?

6. क्योंकि तेरे भाई और तेरे घराने के लोगों ने भी तेरा विश्वासघात किया है; वे तेरे पीछे ललकारते हैं, यदि वे तुझ से मीठी बातें भी कहें, तौभी उनकी प्रतीति न करना।

6. For even thy brethren and the house of thy father, Even they! have betrayed thee, Even they, have cried after thee with full voice, Do not trust in them, though they speak unto thee fair words.

7. मैं ने अपना घर छोड़ दिया, अपना निज भाग मैं ने त्याग दिया है; मैं ने अपनी प्राणप्रिया को शत्रुओं के वश में कर दिया है।

7. I have forsaken mine own house, I have given up mine inheritance, I have delivered the dearly beloved of my soul into the hand of her enemies:

8. क्योंकि मेरा निज भाग मेरे देखने में वन के सिंह के समान हो गया और मेरे विरूद्ध गरजा है; इस कारण मैं ने उस से बैर किया है।

8. Mine inheritance, hath become to me as a lion in a jungle, She hath given forth against me her voice, For this cause, have I hated her.

9. क्या मेरा निज भाग मेरी दृष्टि में चित्तीवाले शिकारी पक्षी के समान नहीं है? क्या शिकारी पक्षी चारों ओर से उसे घेरे हुए हैं? जाओ सब जंगली पशुओं को इकट्ठा करो; उनको लाओ कि खा जाएं।

9. Is it, a variegated bird of prey, that mine inheritance is to me? The birds of prey, are round about against her! Go ye, assemble all the beasts of the field bring them to devour.

10. बहुत से चरवाहों ने मेरी दाख की बारी को बिगाड़ कर दिया, उन्हों ने मेरे भाग को लताड़ा, वरन मेरे मनोहर भाग के खेत को सुनसान जंगल बना दिया है।

10. Many shepherds, have laid waste my vineyard, They have trampled down my portion, They have turned my coveted portion into a desert of desolation:

11. उन्हों ने उसको उजाड़ दिया; वह उजड़कर मेरे साम्हने विलाप कर रहा है। सारा देश उजड़ गया है, तौभी कोई नहीं सोचता।

11. It hath been made a desolation, It hath mourned unto me as desolate, All the land hath become a desolation, For, no man, layeth it to heart.

12. जंगल के सब मुंडे टीलों पर नाशक चढ़ आए हैं; क्योंकि यहोवा की तलवार देश के एक छोर से लेकर दूसरी छोर तक निगलती जाती है; किसी मनुष्य को शांन्ति नहीं मिलती।

12. On all the bare heights in the wilderness, have come despoilers, For the sword of Yahweh hath devoured from one end of the land unto the other, There is peace for no flesh!

13. उन्हों ने गेहूं तो बोया, परन्तु कटीले पेड़ काटे, उन्हों ने कष्ट तो उठाया, परन्तु उस से कुछ लाभ न हुआ। यहोवा के क्रोध के भड़कने के कारण तुम अपने खेतों की उपज के विषय में लज्जित हो।

13. They sowed, wheat, but thorns, have they reaped, They have put themselves to pain they shall not be profited, Yea turn ye pale at your produce, Because if the glow of the anger of Yahweh.

14. मेरे दुष्ट पड़ोसी उस भाग पर हाथ लगाते हैं, जिसका भागी मैं ने अपनी प्रजा इस्राएल को बनाया है। उनके विष्य यहोवा यों कहता है कि मैं उनको उनकी भूमि में से उखाड़ डालूंगा, और यहूदा के घराने को भी उनके बीच में से उखड़ूंगा।

14. Thus, saith Yahweh, Concerning all my wicked neighbours, who have been touching the inheritance which I gave as an inheritance unto my people Israel, Behold me! uprooting them from off their own soil, Whereas the house of Judah, will I uproot out of their midst.

15. उन्हें उखाड़ने के बाद मैं फिर उन पर दया करूंगा, और उन में से हर एक को उसके निज़ भाग और भूमि में फिर से लगाऊंगा।

15. And it shall come to pass after I bare uprooted them, I will again have compassion upon them, and will bring them back Every man to his own inheritance and Every man to his own land.

16. और यदि वे मेरी प्रजा की चाल सीखकर मेरे ही नाम की सौगन्ध, यहोवा के जीवन की सौगन्ध, खाने लगें, जिस प्रकार से उन्हों ने मेरी प्रजा को बाल की सौगन्ध खाना सिखलाया था, तब मेरी प्रजा के बीच उनका भी वंश बढ़ेगा।

16. And it shall come to pass If they will, diligently learn, the ways of my people To swear by my Name saying, By the life of Yahweh, As they taught my people to swear by Baal, Then shall they be built in the midst of my people.

17. परन्तु यदि वे न मानें, तो मैं उस जाति को ऐसा उखाड़ूंगा कि वह फिर कभी न पनंपेगी, यहोवा की यही वाणी है।

17. But if they will not hearken, Then will I Uproot that nation, Uproot, that I may destroy, Declareth Yahweh.
