1. हिल्किरयाह का पुत्रा यिर्मयाह जो बिन्यामीन देश के अनातोत में रहनेवाले याजकों में से था, उसी के ये वचन हैं।

1. THE WORDS of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin [two or three miles north of Jerusalem],

2. यहोवा का वचन उसके पास आमोन के पुत्रा यहूदा के राजा योशिरयाह के दिनों में उसके राज्य के तेरहवें वर्ष में पहुंचा।

2. To whom the word of the Lord came in the days of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah in the thirteenth year of his reign.

3. इसके बाद योशिरयाह के पुत्रा यहूदा के राजा यहोयाकीम के दिनों में, और योशिरयाह के पुत्रा यहूदा के राजा सिदकिरयाह के राज्य के ग्यारहवें वर्ष के अन्त तक भी प्रगट होता रहा जब तक उसी वर्ष के पांचवें महीने में यरूशलेम के निवासी बंधुआई में न चले गए।

3. It came also in the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah until the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah son of Josiah king of Judah, until the carrying away of Jerusalem into captivity in the fifth month. [II Kings 25:8-11.]

4. तब यहोवा का यह वचन मेरे पास पहुंचा,

4. Then the word of the Lord came to me [Jeremiah], saying,

5. गर्भ में रचने से पहिले ही मैं ने तुझ पर चित्त लगाया, और उत्पन्न होने से पहिले ही मैं ने तुझे अभिषेक किया; मैं ने तुझे जातियों का भविष्यद्वक्ता ठहराया।

5. Before I formed you in the womb I knew [and] approved of you [as My chosen instrument], and before you were born I separated and set you apart, consecrating you; [and] I appointed you as a prophet to the nations. [Exod. 33:12; Isa. 49:1, 5; Rom. 8:29.]

6. तब मैं ने कहा, हाय, प्रभु यहोवा ! देख, मैं तो बोलना ही नहीं जानता, क्योंकि मैं लड़का ही हूँ।

6. Then said I, Ah, Lord God! Behold, I cannot speak, for I am only a youth. [Exod. 4:10; 6:12, 30; I Kings 3:7.]

7. परन्तु यहोवा ने मुझ से कहा, मत कह कि मैं लड़का हूँ; क्योंकि जिस किसी के पास मैं तुझे भेजूं वहां तू जाएगा, और जो कुछ मैं तुझे आजा दूं वही तू कहेगा।

7. But the Lord said to me, Say not, I am only a youth; for you shall go to all to whom I shall send you, and whatever I command you, you shall speak.

8. तू उनके मुख को देखकर मत डर, क्योंकि तुझे छुड़ाने के लिये मैं तेरे साथ हूँ, यहोवा की यही वाणी है।

8. Be not afraid of them [their faces], for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord.

9. तब यहोवा ने हाथ बढ़ाकर मेरे मुंह को छुआ; और यहोवा ने मुझ से कहा, देख, मैं ने अपने वचन तेरे मुंह में डाल दिये हैं।

9. Then the Lord put forth His hand and touched my mouth. And the Lord said to me, Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.

10. सुन, मैं ने आज के दिन तुझे जातियों और राज्यों पर अधिकारी ठहराया है; अन्हें गिराने और ढा देने के लिये, नाश करने और काट डालने के लिये, या उन्हें बनाने और रोपने के लिये।

10. See, I have this day appointed you to the oversight of the nations and of the kingdoms to root out and pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.

11. और यहोवा का यह वचन मेरे पास पहुंचा, हे यिर्मयाह, तुझे क्या दिखाई पड़ता है? मैं ने कहा, मुझे बादाम की एक टहनी दिखाई पड़ती है।

11. Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, Jeremiah, what do you see? And I said, I see a branch or shoot of an almond tree [the emblem of alertness and activity, blossoming in late winter].

12. तब यहोवा ने मुझ से कहा, तुझे ठीक दिखाई पड़ता है, क्योंकि मैं अपने वचन को पूरा करने के लिये जागृत हूँ।

12. Then said the Lord to me, You have seen well, for I am alert and active, watching over My word to perform it.

13. फिर यहोवा का वचन दूसरी बार मेरे पास पहंचा, और उस ने पूछा, तुझे क्या दिखाई पड़ता है? मैं ने कहा, मुझे उबलता हुआ एक हण्डा दिखाई पड़ता है जिसका मुंह उत्तर दिशा की ओर से है।

13. And the word of the Lord came to me the second time, saying, What do you see? And I said, I see a boiling pot, and the face of it is [tipped away] from the north [its mouth about to pour forth on the south, on Judea].

14. तब यहोवा ने मुझ से कहा, इस देश के सब रहनेवालों पर उत्तर दिशा से विपत्ति आ पड़ेगी।

14. Then the Lord said to me, Out of the north the evil [which the prophets had foretold as the result of national sin] shall disclose itself and break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land.

15. यहोवा की यह वाणी है, मैं उत्तर दिशा के राज्यों और कुलों को बुलाऊंगा; और वे आकर यरूशलेम के फाटकों में और उसके चारों ओर की शहरपनाह, और यहूदा के और सब नगरों के साम्हने अपना अपना सिंहासन लगाएंगे।

15. For, behold, I will call all the tribes of the kingdoms of the north, says the Lord; and they will come and set every one his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, against all its walls round about, and against all the cities of Judah [as God's judicial act, a consequence of Judah's wickedness].

16. और उनकी सारी बुराई के कारण मैं उन पर दण्ड की आज्ञा दूंगा; क्योंकि उन्हों ने मुझे त्यागकर दूसरे देवताओं के लिये धूप जलाया और अपनी बनाई हुई वस्तुओं को दण्डवत् किया है।

16. And I will utter My judgments against them for all the wickedness of those who have forsaken Me, burned incense to other gods, and worshiped the works of their own hands [idols].

17. इसलिये तू अपनी कमर कसकर उठ; और जो कुछ कहने की मैं तुझे आज्ञा दूं वही उन से कह। तू उनके मुख को देखकर न घबराना, ऐसा न हो कि मैं तुझे उनके साम्हने घबरा दूं।

17. But you [Jeremiah], gird up your loins! Arise and tell them all that I command you. Do not be dismayed and break down at the sight of their faces, lest I confound you before them and permit you to be overcome.

18. क्योंकि सुन, मैं ने आज तुझे इस सारे देश और यहूद के राजाओं, हाकिमों, और याजकों और साधारण लोगों के विरूद्व गढ़वाला नगर, और लोहे का खम्भा, और पीतल की शहरपनाह बनाया है।

18. For I, behold, I have made you this day a fortified city and an iron pillar and bronze walls against the whole land--against the [successive] kings of Judah, against its princes, against its priests, and against the people of the land [giving you divine strength which no hostile power can overcome]. [Isa. 50:7; 54:17; Jer. 6:27; 15:20; Luke 21:15; Acts 6:10.]

19. वे तुझ से लड़ेंगे तो सही, परन्तु तुझ पर प्रबल न होंगे, क्योंकि बचाने के लिये मैं तेरे साथ हूँ, यहोवा की यही वाणी है।

19. And they shall fight against you, but they shall not [finally] prevail against you, for I am with you, says the Lord, to deliver you.
