1. क्षयर्ष नाम राजा के दिनों में ये बातें हुई :यह वही क्षयर्ष है, जो एक सौ सताईस प्रान्तों पर, अर्थात् हिन्दुस्तान से लेकर कूश देश तक राज्य करता था।

1. It was in the days of Ahasuerus, the Ahasuerus whose empire stretched from India to Ethiopia and comprised one hundred and twenty-seven provinces. (a) In the second year of the reign of the Great King, Ahasuerus, on the first day of Nisan, a dream came to Mordecai son of Jair, son of Shimei, son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin, (b) a Jew living at Susa and holding high office at the royal court. (c) He was one of the captives whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had deported from Jerusalem with Jeconiah king of Judah. (d) This was his dream. There were cries and noise, thunder and earthquakes, and disorder over the whole earth. (e) Then two great dragons came forward, each ready for the fray, and set up a great roar. (f) At the sound of them every nation made ready to wage war against the nation of the just. (g) A day of darkness and gloom, of affliction and distress, oppression and great disturbance on earth! (h) The entire upright nation was thrown into consternation at the fear of the evils awaiting it and prepared for death, crying out to God. (i) Then from its cry, as from a little spring, there grew a great river, a flood of water. (j) Light came as the sun rose, and the humble were raised up and devoured the mighty. (k) On awakening from this dream and vision of God's designs, Mordecai thought deeply about the matter, trying his best all day to discover what its meaning might be. (l) Mordecai was lodging at court with Bigthan and Teresh, two of the king's eunuchs who guarded the palace. (m) Having got wind of their plotting and gained knowledge of their designs, he discovered that they were preparing to assassinate King Ahasuerus, and he warned the king against them. (n) The king gave orders for the two officers to be tortured; they confessed and were executed. (o) He then had these events entered in his Record Book, while Mordecai himself also wrote an account of them. (p) The king then appointed Mordecai to an office at court and rewarded him with presents. (q) But Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, who enjoyed high favour with the king, determined to injure Mordecai in revenge for the affair of the king's two officers.

2. उन्हीं दिनों में जब क्षयर्ष राजा अपनी उस राजगद्दी पर विराजमान था जो शूशन नाम राजगढ़ में थी।

2. In those days, when King Ahasuerus was sitting on his royal throne in the citadel of Susa,

3. वहां उस ने अपने राज्य के तीसरे वर्ष में अपने सब हाकिमों और कर्मचारियों की जेवनार की। फ़ारस और मादै के सेनापति और प्रान्त- प्रान्त के प्रधान और हाकिम उसके सम्मुख आ गए।

3. in the third year of his reign, he gave a banquet at his court for all his officers-of-state and ministers, Persian and Median army-commanders, nobles and provincial governors.

4. और वह उन्हें बहुत दिन वरन एक सौ अस्सी दिन तक अपने राजविभव का धन और अपने माहात्म्य के अनमोल पदार्थ दिखाता रहा।

4. Thus he displayed the riches and splendour of his empire and the pomp and glory of his majesty; the festivities went on for a long time, a hundred and eighty days.

5. इतने दिनों के बीतने पर राजा ने क्या छोटे क्य बड़े उन सभों की भी जो शूशन नाम राजगढ़ में इकट्ठे हुए थे, राजभवन की बारी के आंगन में सात दिन तक जेवनार की।

5. When this period was over, for seven days the king gave a banquet for all the people living in the citadel of Susa, to high and low alike, on the esplanade in the gardens of the royal palace.

6. वहां के पर्दे श्वेत और नीले सूत के थे, और सन और बैंजनी रंग की डोरियों से चान्दी के छल्लों में, संगमर्मर के खम्भों से लगे हुए थे; और वहां की चौकियां सोने- चान्दी की थीं; और लाल और श्वेत और पीले और काले संगमर्मर के बने हुए फ़र्श पर धरी हुई थीं।

6. There were white and violet hangings fastened with cords of fine linen and purple thread to silver rings on marble columns, couches of gold and silver on a pavement of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl and precious stones.

7. उस जेवनार में राजा के योग्य दाखमधु भिन्न भिन्न रूप के सोने के पात्रों में डालकर राजा की उदारता से बहुतायत के साथ पिलाया जाता था।

7. For drinking there were golden cups of various design and plenty of wine provided by the king with royal liberality.

8. पीना तो नियम के अनुसार होता था, किसी को बरबस नहीं पिलाया जाता था; क्योंकि राजा ने तो अपने भवन के सब भणडारियों को आज्ञा दी थी, कि जो पाहुन जैसा चाहे उसके साथ वैसा ही बर्ताव करना।

8. The royal edict did not, however, make drinking obligatory, the king having instructed the officials of his household to treat each guest according to the guest's own wishes.

9. रानी बशती ने भी राजा क्षयर्ष के भवन में स्त्रियों की जेवनार की।

9. Queen Vashti, for her part, gave a banquet for the women in the royal palace of King Ahasuerus.

10. सातवें दिन, जब राजा का मन दाखमधु में मग्न था, तब उस ने महूमान, बिजता, हब ना, बिगता, अबगता, जेतेर और कर्कस नाम सातों खेजों को जो क्षयर्ष राजा के सम्मुख सेवा टहल किया करते थे, आज्ञा दी,

10. On the seventh day, when the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar and Carkas, the seven officers in attendance on the person of King Ahasuerus,

11. कि रानी वशती को राजमुकुट धारण किए हुए राजा के सम्मुख ले आओ; जिस से कि देश देश के लोगों और हाकिमों पर उसकी सुन्दरता प्रगट हो जाए; क्योंकि वह देखने में सुन्दर थी।

11. to bring Queen Vashti before the king, crowned with her royal diadem, in order to display her beauty to the people and the officers-of-state, since she was very beautiful.

12. खोजों के द्वारा राजा की यह आज्ञा पाकर रानी वशती ने आने से इनकार किया। इस पर राजा बड़े क्रोध से जलने लगा।

12. But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king's command delivered by the officers. The king was very angry at this and his rage grew hot.

13. तब राजा ने समय समय का भेद जाननेवाले पणिडतों से पुछा (राजा तो नीति और न्याय के सब ज्ञानियों से ऐसा ही किया करता था।

13. Addressing himself to the wise men who were versed in the law -- it being the practice to refer matters affecting the king to expert lawyers and jurists-

14. और उसके पास कर्शना, शेतार, अदमाता, तश श, मेरेस, मर्सना, और ममूकान नाम फ़ारस, और मादै के सातों खेजे थे, जो राजा का दर्शन करते, और राज्य में मुख्य मुख्य पदों पर नियुक्त किए गए थे। )

14. he summoned Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena and Memucan, seven Persian and Median officers-of-state who had privileged access to the royal presence and occupied the leading positions in the kingdom.

15. राजा ने पूछा कि रानी वशती ने राजा क्षयर्ष की खोजों द्वारा दिलाई हुई आज्ञा का उलंघन किया, तो नीति के अनुसार उसके साथ क्या किया जाए?

15. 'According to law,' he said, 'what is to be done to Queen Vashti for not obeying the command of King Ahasuerus delivered by the officers?'

16. तब ममूकान ने राजा और हाकिमों की उपस्थिति में उत्तर दिया, रानी वशती ने जो अनुचित काम किया है, वह न केवल राजा से परन्तु सब हाकिमों से और उन सब देशों के लोगों से भी जो राजा क्षयर्ष के सब प्रान्तों में रहते हैं।

16. In the presence of the king and the officers-of-state, Memucan replied, 'Queen Vashti has wronged not only the king but also all the officers-of-state and all the peoples inhabiting the provinces of King Ahasuerus.

17. क्योंकि रानी के इस काम की चर्चा सब स्त्रियों में होगी और जब यह कहा जाएगा, कि राजा क्षयर्ष ने रानी वशती को अपने साम्हने ले आने की आज्ञा दी परन्तु वह न आई, तब वे भी अपने अपने पति को तुच्छ जानने लगेंगी।

17. The queen's conduct will soon become known to all the women, who will adopt a contemptuous attitude towards their own husbands. They will say, 'King Ahasuerus himself commanded Queen Vashti to appear before him and she did not come.'

18. और आज के दिन फ़ारसी और मादी हाकिमों की स्त्रियां जिन्हों ने रानी की यह बात सुनी है तो वे भी राजा के सब हाकिमों से ऐसा ही कहने लगेंगी; इस प्रकार बहुत ही घृणा और क्रोध उत्पन्न होगा।

18. Before the day is out, the wives of the Persian and Median officers-of-state will be telling every one of the king's officers-of-state what they have heard about the queen's behaviour; and that will mean contempt and anger all round.

19. यदि राजा को स्वीकार हो, तो यह आज्ञा निकाले, और फार्सियों और मादियों के कानून में लिखी भी जाए, जिस से कभी बदल न सके, कि रानी वशती राजा क्षयर्ष के सम्मुख फिर कभी आने न पाए, और राजा पटरानी का पद किसी दूसरी को दे दे जो उस से अच्छी हो।

19. If it is the king's pleasure, let him issue a royal edict, to be irrevocably incorporated into the laws of the Persians and Medes, to the effect that Vashti is never to appear again before King Ahasuerus, and let the king confer her royal dignity on a worthier woman.

20. और जब राजा की यह आज्ञा उसके सारे राज्य में सुनाई जाएगी, तब सब पत्नियां छोटे, बड़े, अपने अपने पति का आदरमान करती रहेंगी।

20. Let this edict issued by the king be proclaimed throughout his empire -- which is great -- and all the women will henceforth bow to the authority of their husbands, both high and low alike.'

21. यह बात राजा और हाकिमों को पसन्द आई और राजा ने ममूकान की सम्मति मान ली और अपने राज्य में,

21. This speech pleased the king and the officers-of-state, and the king did as Memucan advised.

22. अर्थत् प्रत्येक प्रान्त के अक्षरों में और प्रत्येक जाति की भाषा में चिटि्ठयां भेजीं, कि सब पुरूष अपने अपने घर में अधिकार चलाएं, और अपनी जाति की भाषा बोला करें।

22. He sent letters to all the provinces of the kingdom, to each province in its own script and to each nation in its own language, ensuring that every husband should be master in his own house.
