1. जब सम्बल्लत, तोबियाह और अरबी गेशेम और हमारे और शत्रुओं को यह समाचार मिला, कि मैं शहरपनाह को बनवा चुका; और यद्यपि उस समय तक भी मैं फाटकों में पल्ले न लगा चुका था, तौभी शहरपनाह में कोई दरार न रह गया था।

1. Now it came to pass, when it was reported to Sanballat and Tobiah, and to Geshem the Arabian, and unto the rest of our enemies, that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though even unto that time I had not set up the doors in the gates;)

2. तब सम्बल्लत और गेशेम ने मेरे पास यों कहला भेजा, कि आ, हम ओनो के मैदान के किसी गांव में एक दूसरे से भेंट करें। परन्तु वे मेरी हानि करने की इच्छा करते थे।

2. that Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in [one of] the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief.

3. परन्तु मैं ने उनके पास दूतों से कहला भेजा, कि मैं तो भारी काम में लगा हूँ, वहां नहीं जा सकता; मेरे इसे छोड़कर तुम्हारे पास जाने से वह काम क्यों बन्द रहे?

3. And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?

4. फिर उन्हों ने चार बार मेरे पास वैसी ही बात कहला भेजी, और मैं ने उनको वैसा ही उत्तर दिया।

4. And they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.

5. तब पांचवी बार सम्बल्लत ने अपने सेवक को खुली हुई चिट्ठी देकर मेरे पास भेजा,

5. Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand,

6. जिस में यों लिखा था, कि जाति जाति के लोगों में यह कहा जाता है, और गेशेम भी यही बात कहता है, कि तुम्हारी और यहूदियों की मनसा बलवा करने की है, और इस कारण तू उस शहरपनाह को बनवाता है; और तू इन बातों के अनुसार उनका राजा बनना चाहता है।

6. wherein was written, It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel; for which cause thou art building the wall: and thou wouldest be their king, according to these words.

7. और तू ने यरूशलेम में नबी ठहराए हैं, जो यह कहकर तेरे विषय प्रचार करें, कि यहूदियों में एक राजा है। अब ऐसा ही समाचार राजा को दिया जाएगा। इसलिये अब आ, हम एक साथ सम्मति करें।

7. And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.

8. तब मैं ने उसके पास कहला भेजा कि जैसा तू कहता है, वैसा तो कुछ भी नहीं हुआ, तू ये बातें अपने मन से गढ़ता है।

8. Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.

9. वे सब लोग यह सोचकर हमें डराना चाहते थे, कि उनके हाथ ढीले पड़ें, और काम बन्द हो जाए। परन्तु अब हे परमेश्वर तू मुझे हियाव दे।

9. For they all would have made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. But now, [O God], strengthen thou my hands.

10. और मैं शमायाह के घर में गया, जो दलायाह का पुत्रा और महेतबेल का पोता था, वह तो बन्द घर में था; उस ने कहा, आ, हम परमेश्वर के भवन अर्थात् मन्दिर के भीतर आपस में भेंट करें, और मन्दिर के द्वार बन्द करें; क्योंकि वे लोग तुझे घात करने आएंगे, रात ही को वे तुझे घात करने आएंगे।

10. And I went unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee.

11. परन्तु मैं ने कहा, क्या मुझ ऐसा मनुष्य भागे? और तुझ ऐसा कौन है जो अपना प्राण बचाने को मन्दिर में घुसे? मैं नहीं जाने का।

11. And I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who is there, that, being such as I, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.

12. फिर मैं ने जान लिया कि वह परमेश्वर का भेजा नहीं है परन्तु उस ने हर बात ईश्वर का वचन कहकर मेरी हानि के लिये कही, क्योंकि तोबियाह और सम्बल्लत ने उसे रूपया दे रखा था।

12. And I discerned, and, lo, God had not sent him; but he pronounced this prophecy against me: and Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

13. उन्हों ने उसे इस कारण रूपया दे रखा था कि मैं डर जाऊं, और वैसा ही काम करके पापी ठहरूं, और उनको अपवाद लगाने का अवसर मिले और वे मेरी नामधराई कर सकें।

13. For this cause was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me.

14. हे मेरे रपरमेश्वर ! तोबियाह, सम्बल्लत, और नोअद्याह, नबिया और और तितने नबी मुझे डराना चाहते थे, उन सब के ऐसे ऐसे कामों की सुधि रख।

14. Remember, O my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.

15. एलूल महीने के पचीसवें दिन को अर्थात् बावन दिन के भीतर शहरपनाह बन चुकी।

15. So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth [day] of [the month] Elul, in fifty and two days.

16. जब हमारे सब शत्रुओं ने यह सुना, तब हमारे चारों ओर रहनेवाले सब अन्यजाति डर गए, और बहुत लज्जित हुए; क्योंकि उन्हों ने जान लिया कि यह काम हमारे परमेश्वर की ओर से हुआ।

16. And it came to pass, when all our enemies heard [thereof], that all the nations that were about us feared, and were much cast down in their own eyes; for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.

17. उन दिनों में भी यहूदी रईसों और तोबियाह के बीच चिट्ठ बहुत आया जाया करती थी।

17. Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and [the letters] of Tobiah came unto them.

18. क्योंकि वह आरह के पुत्रा शकम्याह का दामाद था, और उसके पुत्रा यहोहानान ने बेरेक्याह के पुत्रा मशुल्लाम की बेटी की ब्याह लिया था; इस कारण बहुत से यहूदी उसका पक्ष करने की शपथ खाए हुए थे।

18. For there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah; and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah to wife.

19. और वे मेरे सुनते उसके भले कामों की चर्चा किया करते, और मेरी बातें भी उसको सुनाया करते थे। और तोबियाह मुझे डराने के लिये चिटि्ठयां भेजा करता था।

19. Also they spake of his good deeds before me, and reported my words to him. [And] Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.
