1. शाऊल के मरने के बाद, जब दाऊद अमालेकियों को मारकर लौटा, और दाऊद को सिकलग में रहते हुए दो दिन हो गए,

1. Shortly after Saul died, David returned to Ziklag from his rout of the Amalekites.

2. तब तीसरे दिन ऐसा हुआ कि छावनी में से शाऊल के पास से एक पुरूष कपड़े फाड़े सिर पर धूली डाले हुए आया। और जब वह दाऊद के पास पहुंचा, तब भूमि पर गिरा और दणडवत् किया।

2. Three days later a man showed up unannounced from Saul's army camp. Disheveled and obviously in mourning, he fell to his knees in respect before David.

3. दाऊद ने उस से पूछा, तू कहां से आया है? उस ने उस से कहा, मैं इस्राएली छावनी में से बचकर आया हूं।

3. David asked, 'What brings you here?' He answered, 'I've just escaped from the camp of Israel.'

4. दाऊद ने उस से पूछा, वहां क्या बात हुई? मुझे बता। उस ने कहा, यह, कि लोग रणभूमि छोड़कर भाग गए, और बहुत लोग मारे गए; और शाऊल और उसका पुत्रा योनातन भी मारे गए हैं।

4. 'So what happened?' said David. 'What's the news?' He said, 'The Israelites have fled the battlefield, leaving a lot of their dead comrades behind. And Saul and his son Jonathan are dead.'

5. दाऊद ने उस समाचार देनेवाले जवान से पूछा, कि तू कैसे जानता है कि शाऊल और उसका पुत्रा योनातन मर गए?

5. David pressed the young soldier for details: 'How do you know for sure that Saul and Jonathan are dead?'

6. समाचार देनेवाले जवान ने कहा, संयोग से मैं गिलबो पहाड़ पर था; तो क्या देखा, कि शाऊल अपने भाले की टेक लगाए हुए है; फिर मैं ने यह भी देखा कि उसका पीछा किए हुए रथ और सवार बड़े वेग से दौड़े आ रहे हैं।

6. 'I just happened by Mount Gilboa and came on Saul, badly wounded and leaning on his spear, with enemy chariots and horsemen bearing down hard on him.

7. उस ने पीछे फिरकर मुझे देखा, और मुझे पुकारा। मैं ने कहा,क्या आज्ञा?

7. He looked behind him, saw me, and called me to him. 'Yes sir,' I said, 'at your service.'

8. उस ने मुझ से पूछा, तू कौन है? मैं ने उस से कहा, मैं तो अमालेकी हूँ।

8. He asked me who I was, and I told him, 'I'm an Amalekite.''

9. उस ने मुझ से कहा, मेरे पास खड़ा होकर मुझे मार डाल; क्योंकि मेरा सिर तो घुमा जाता है, परन्तु प्राण नही निकलता।

9. 'Come here,' he said, 'and put me out of my misery. I'm nearly dead already, but my life hangs on.'

10. तब मैं ने यह निश्चय जान लिया, कि वह गिर जाने के पहचात् नहीं बच सकता, उसके पास खड़े होकर उसे मार डाला; और मैं उसके सिर का मुकुट और उसके हाथ का कंगन लेकर यहां अपने प्रभु के पास आया हूँ।

10. 'So I did what he asked--I killed him. I knew he wouldn't last much longer anyway. I removed his royal headband and bracelet, and have brought them to my master. Here they are.'

11. तब दाऊद ने अपने कपडे पकड़कर फाड़े; और जितने पुरूष उसके संग थे उन्हों ने भी वैसा ही किया;

11. In lament, David ripped his clothes to ribbons. All the men with him did the same.

12. और वे शाऊल, और उसके पुत्रा योनातन, और यहोवा की प्रजा, और इस्राएल के घराने के लिये छाती पीटने और रोने लगे, और सांझ तक कुछ न खाया, इस कारण कि वे तलवार से मारे गए थे।

12. They wept and fasted the rest of the day, grieving the death of Saul and his son Jonathan, and also the army of GOD and the nation Israel, victims in a failed battle.

13. फिर दाऊद ने उस समाचार देनेवाले जवान से पूछा, तू कहां का है? उस ने कहा, मैं तो परदेशी का बेटा अर्थात् अमालेकी हूँ।

13. Then David spoke to the young soldier who had brought the report: 'Who are you, anyway?' 'I'm from an immigrant family--an Amalekite.'

14. दाऊद ने उस से कहा, तू यहोवा के अभिषिक्त को नाश करने के लिये हाथ बढ़ाने से क्यों नहीं डरा?

14. 'Do you mean to say,' said David, 'that you weren't afraid to up and kill GOD's anointed king?'

15. तब दाऊद ने एक जवान को बुलाकर कहा, निकट जाकर उस पर प्रहार कर। तब उस ने उसे ऐसा मारा कि वह मर गया।

15. Right then he ordered one of his soldiers, 'Strike him dead!' The soldier struck him, and he died.

16. और दाऊद ने उस से कहा, तेरा खून तेरे ही सिर पर पड़े; क्योंकि तू ने यह कहकर कि मैं ही ने यहोवा के अभिषिक्त को मार डाला, अपने मुंह से अपने ही विरूद्ध साक्षी दी है।

16. 'You asked for it,' David told him. 'You sealed your death sentence when you said you killed GOD's anointed king.'

17. (शाऊल और योनातन के लिये दाऊद का बनाया हुआ विलापगीत ) तब दाऊद ने शाऊल और उसके पुत्रा योनातन के विषय यह विलापगीत बनाया,

17. Then David sang this lament over Saul and his son Jonathan,

18. और यहूदियों को यह धनुष नाम गीत सिखाने की आज्ञा दी; यह याशार नाम पुस्तक में लिखा हुआ है;

18. and gave orders that everyone in Judah learn it by heart. Yes, it's even inscribed in The Book of Jashar.

19. हे इस्राएल, तेरा शिरोमणि तेरे ऊंचे स्थान पर मारा गया। हाय, शूरवीर क्योंकर गिर पड़े हैं!

19. Oh, oh, Gazelles of Israel, struck down on your hills, the mighty warriors--fallen, fallen!

20. गत में यह न बताओ, और न अश्कलोन की सड़कों में प्रचार करना; न हो कि पलिश्ती स्त्रियां आनन्दित हों, न हो कि खतनारहित लोगों की बेटियां गर्व करने लगें।

20. Don't announce it in the city of Gath, don't post the news in the streets of Ashkelon. Don't give those coarse Philistine girls one more excuse for a drunken party!

21. हे गिलबो पहाड़ो, तुम पर न ओस पड़े, और न वर्षा हो, और न भेंट के योग्य उपजवाले खेत पाए जाएं! क्योंकि वहां शूरवीरों की ढालें अशुठ्ठ हो गई। और शाऊल की ढाल बिना तेल लगाए रह गई।

21. No more dew or rain for you, hills of Gilboa, and not a drop from springs and wells, For there the warriors' shields were dragged through the mud, Saul's shield left there to rot.

22. जूझे हुओं के लोहू बहाने से, और शूरवीरों की चर्बी खाने से, योनातन का धनुष लौट न जाता था, और न शाऊल की तलवार छूछी फिर आती थी।

22. Jonathan's bow was bold-- the bigger they were the harder they fell. Saul's sword was fearless-- once out of the scabbard, nothing could stop it.

23. शाऊल और योनातन जीवनकाल में तो प्रिय और मनभाऊ थे, और अपनी मृत्यु के समय अलग न हुए; वे उकाब से भी वेग चलनेवाले, और सिंह से भी अधिक पराक्रमी थ्ो़।

23. Saul and Jonathan--beloved, beautiful! Together in life, together in death. Swifter than plummeting eagles, stronger than proud lions.

24. हे इस्राएली स्त्रियो, शाऊल के लिये रोओ, वह तो तुम्हें लाल रंग के वस्त्र पहिनाकर सुख देता, और तुम्हारे वस्त्रों के ऊपर सोने के गहने पहिनाता था।

24. Women of Israel, weep for Saul. He dressed you in finest cottons and silks, spared no expense in making you elegant.

25. हाय, युद्ध के बीच शूरवीर कैसे काम आए ! हे योनातन, हे ऊंचे स्थानों पर जूझे हुए,

25. The mighty warriors--fallen, fallen in the middle of the fight! Jonathan--struck down on your hills!

26. हे मेरे भाई योनातन, मैं तेरे कारण दु:खित हूँ; तू मुझे बहुत मनभाऊ जान पड़ता था; तेरा प्रेम मुझ पर अद्भुत, वरन स्त्रियों के प्रेम से भी बढ़कर था।

26. O my dear brother Jonathan, I'm crushed by your death. Your friendship was a miracle-wonder, love far exceeding anything I've known-- or ever hope to know.

27. हाय, शूरवीर क्योंकर गिर गए, और युद्ध के हथियार कैसे नाश हो गए हैं !

27. The mighty warriors--fallen, fallen. And the arms of war broken to bits.
